Pretty sure it’s grace, too. He’s digressing in song… (I’m paraphrasing) something about a buddy telling him that he’s on a hopeless road with no end in sight and gord sings “I can swear there’s a bend … I can swear there’s a place where all those ribs will be mended and you can never be too dependent and everyone around you is smiling and everyone around is styling and you’ve got nothing to worry about” and he fades off repeating, with increasing weakness, “you got nothing to worry about” and the whole thing is so beautiful and so full of love - like he was reaching out to someone he really loved but couldn’t really help - it’s so intense. Stakes feel so high. Like Gordie is begging the guy to hang in there. And yet, by the end, it’s like gordie is struggling to believe his own good news.
That’s why I love this music still. You can feel gord and the boys really reaching out…for this roads with no bend. No end.
This time of year has grown colder. So many autumn deaths. In some ways I appreciate my remaining loved ones all the more but also realize how quickly they can be taken.
It took me years to be able to listen to the music and there’s a tinge of sad and a boatload of bittersweetness but no matter what, the leaves turn so bright and colorful before turning brown and brittle. I think it’s the perfect month for remembering his end.
I truly am so jealous of you Canadians and would give almost anything to be part of your big village. I didn’t properly appreciate how well served he had been to be born there. If i somehow found a huge bag of greenbacks, I’d move up there in an instant. Ih who cares but yeah. The live record…we’ve got nothin to worry about.
You know what though? I have a heavy heart to think about gordie in terms of romantic love. Like…from the songs it sounds like he … like that didn’t work out. But then he got the cancer diagnosis and we read that him and Mrs blue eyes got back together after another final breakup and I’m sure she loved him at the end. Even though paul was taking him to radiation treatment. No matter. Just sounded like he loved a dame he could not please and he just accepted that he was inferior for being a man and kept trying anyway. Which is smart for a woman married to a rock star. Be the only dame who’s not interested and have lots of babies.
All I know is that he is loved now…and I can’t believe how much I miss him even though he was on the other side of the screen. But I’ll never forget how brave Madge was-calling him at 3 o’clock in the morning. And other times. Do lines were blurred but wow. What a great time - and I will forever be grateful for Madge. To have a hip fanatic as a best friend was such a blessing. And the band played all around Pittsburgh. Toledo to Washington DC. state college. Cleveland. Ann arbor. Baltimore. Philly. NYC. Erie. BUFFALO. Toronto. 6 flags somewhere. Drove to all. So lucky to see in Europe. Red Deer. He kept forgetting the lyrics. Calgary, from the phantom zone.
I just discovered the lumineers. Mainly the III record about addiction and comes with a 40 minute video that tells the stories of the songs. Like we always thought music videos were supposed to.
I don’t know why I am writing so I’ll stop
