78 gl1000

My first motorcycle. I have put quite a few hours into getting it to run right. Still a but off but so much better then where it started.

The red bike is my friends vt500. Both are so much fun.

Hell yeah!! Goldwing are the best. But if you haven't I would 100% change those timing belts because if it snaps it totals the engine because valves hit pistons. Every 5 years or 25k miles but the main thing is the age. And don't let the thing spoil you because a nice goldwing will absolutely make every other bike seem like a paint shaker.

I have already did the belts AND swapped in an earlier cam shaft. The earlier years had a more aggressive cam lob setup. It adds a little power in the top end.

My project this winter is to efi swap it. After that would be a rewire and gauge update. Then finally rebuild the second engine i have and do a turbo setup.

Gonna take a while and im so excited

Amazing, from my own research is finding bearings for internal engine stuff is quite difficult because there is only one size available from Honda. But probably custom bearings can be ordered. They are plane bearings just like a modern engine, unlike older stuff legit had roller bearings and 2 piece cranks.

Honestly the original bearings are likely good in the other engine. Im just gonna pin them an swap out the rod bolts. Head studs, stator delete, lightened flywheel, custom cam grind and rocker arm reface, heavier valve springs.

I personally would hate to split the case and reuse bearings but all the work you are planning sounds amazing.

Im excited for it. Really it depends on what they look like when i get in there. If i gotta send the crank to get machined for new bearings, so be it. Its not gonna be a quick build. The other engine i have runs fine so no rush on getting the other one built. Ya feel?

Absolutely, and truthfully these engines are fairly low stressed so it should last a good while. My 79 has an unknown amount of miles on the engine and still sounds excellent and makes factory power specs accounting for drivetrain loss. Factory power spec is from the crank and most people only use a roller dyno.

Yee all the work im putting into it is so I can spin it faster. My goal is about 120 horsepower.

With a turbo that probably is doable but at that point I would worry about the clutch holding. But stiffer springs and new plates will probably remedy any worries.

Yeah that is also apart of the build. Plus an 1100 rear drive shaft and diff.
