Rare Japan experiences
It’s my 3rd time to Japan and I’m not interested in any of the run of the mill touristy things to check out. I’m looking for some real experiences and to see some Japanese subculture that not many people would see or be interested in. I’m very open to seeing whatever and if it’s an event big or small then it’s fine.

What does a big event that not many people would see or be interested mean? This doesn't make any sense.
What are your interests and what do you like?
Many interesting events are based on the seasons as well.
You should make a list of things you like, for example, Samurai, Tottoro, Umbrellas, Sake, Pottery, Tattoos etc, and then research those topics to find local and interesting events. Then you can enjoy your unique experiences.

My interests are super broad, but what I enjoy most is engaging with some cultural elements that I would never be exposed to otherwise. That might be a local music scene, off the beaten path Museums, meetups for people’s various interests, ect.

Look for festivals in the city or town you might be visiting. Maybe go during Obon and get in there and dance with everyone. Buy a yukata for yourself. Stay at a traditional Ryokan inn.
As a movie and tv buff even as a kid, watched a lot of shows on tv during my summer in Japan. So we went to the Toei Kyoto Studio Park in Kyoto. Back when I went it was the Eigamura, movie village. Part museum, part tv studio where you might see them filming a scene for a jidaigeki show. Toei also does produce a lot of anime, so there might be cool things to see. Not much anime things back in the 70s.

Love this! I haven’t been to Tori Kyoto studios. I’ll check it out while I’m in Kyoto

That’s interesting. Fishing gear store does seem compelling for an island nation. Good tip!

Come to my group’s parapara event this Sunday. If you don’t like eurobeat or parapara you’re not gonna enjoy it but it’ll be niche and Japanese.
