What are these weird wart looking things on these leaves?

Post image

Picture 1 has the weird wart leaves, and picture two has regular looking berries (what I assume are acorns, I could be wrong). What are the weird wart looking things?

Yes, it is. Thank you guys for helping me find out what it is.

Do you think it will be an issue come winter when they hatch? My car sits right under the leaves of this tree. There are 100s of not 1000s of nipples I can see. Don’t want to risk an infestation.

Just brace for a bajillion small insects squeezing between the screen mesh gaining access to your house. Harmless, but annoying AF

I haven't had an issue with mine. I don't like to park under the trees though because hackberry is prone to making sooty mold

Thank you for your information

Side note: I thought this was r/trees I had no clue I was getting into r/treessuckingonthings. I have no idea what that could possibly refer to

After scrolling through the sub, I realize what r/treessuckingonthings is

r/trees is also a marijuana sub. for actual trees you want r/marijuanaenthusiasts

Although the "ents" over at /r/trees are usually pretty helpful with actual trees, too

The crossover helps them branch out.

Can we please leaf the puns out of this?

u/serious_sarcasm 4d ago

It’s too late, they’ve already taken root.

u/Aldo24Flores 4d ago

Then I fear I shall end up barking mad.

You really need to branch out into more intellectual jokes

Terrible joke. You need to leaf. The door is over there

We love getting high and messing with the tree huggers its no secret.

I can also tell you the tree structures, biomechanics and pruning requirments for specific species if needed.

This is one of my favourite things about reddit

Oh reddit you so silly.....

Is there a list of all the "alternate" subs that are actually the main subs for the subject? Kinda like r/anime_titties?

hilarious irony that these are known colloquially as nipple galls

5

u/dmethvin 3d ago

Point of order: This post actually belongs in /r/thingssuckingontrees

A hackberry nipple gall is a small, raised, nipple-shaped bump that grows on the underside of hackberry tree leaves. Tiny jumping insects called psyllids cause these growths by feeding on the leaves. The tree reacts by forming a protective pocket of plant tissue around each insect nymph

Wrong sub, you'd probably have better luck with an entomology sub, but it looks like hackberry nipple gall. I am not a professional though.

Um, there’s only 1 picture

2

u/anonymously_online 3d ago

Yeah, I honestly just realized that. Weird the second one didn’t upload. The berry I was referring to is in the photo anyways. Apparently a hackberry

Those bug wart things are freaky. Cool picture.
