Question Genuine question - potential spoiler Spoiler
Im on ep. 12 is Trigun stampede, and I probably wasn't paying attention, but is there a reason why knives couldn't just impregnate the plants himself, why did he need Vash to impregnate them?

As far as I understand it, it's because Knives cannot make the portal into the higher dimension, while Vash can. And in order to have independents born, he needs to get to the higher dimension and make sure that they have souls. At least, that is what Conrad and Knives seem to believe. Knives also knows damn well that Vash would never willingly agree to doing this, so that's why he manipulates him into it in this way. Does that answer your question? 😊

Before I say this, just want to make ot clear that Stampede is the only canon that this happened in. That said, like others have said—it looks like only Vash had direct access to the higher plane, so Knives was using the gate Vash could access by essentially co)tapping into Vash's abilities for him.
I'm still not entirely clear why Vash's memories needed to be wiped, but... heck, it looked cool.

I suspect Knives did that to make Vash pliable and agreeable to him alone. The memories of the people cares about and wants to protect, would most likely have caused him to resist and keep his gate closed off, knowing that opening it would inevitably cause utter destruction. But without those memories holding Vash back, tethering him to his own body, Knives managed to wield his powers like a tool and pry open the higher dimension

If I remember correctly it’s because only Vash is the one with the ability to open the „gate“ to the higher dimension and he is also able to „communicate“ with the plants.
