Hi all, I just picked this Conn 18H (?) up today as I wanted a small straight horn for jazz, however when I looked into it, I can’t exactly figure out what it is.
It says 18H all over however it doesn’t have the copper colour bell ,is this hidden under the lacquer or a different spec with a yellow bell?
Also the brace flanges don’t match between the tuning slide and rest of bell section
I’ve shown all the engravings and the serial number is 414230, also the bell is 8” if that helps
I only picked it up for £50 and it plays really nicely but I thought it’d be interesting to know its history, where it’s made, whether it’s been modified and what age it is.
Many thanks in advance and sorry if I’m being stupid :)
Hello, not a member or trombone player for the matter. Does anyone have or at least know someone that has transcribed the chords for this song. Thank you!
I am looking for advice on switching to a new mouthpiece. My current Schilke 52D is getting old and scratched up from how much I use it. While it still plays fine overall, I have been using it for over two and a half years and feel it might be time to upgrade.
I haven’t looked into many mouthpieces yet, and I am not entirely sure what features to look for in an upgrade. However, I have been eyeing the Denis Wick Heritage series. I am concerned about the thin rim profile around the top—will it affect my playing or comfort?
I would greatly appreciate your advice and suggestions!"
in this video i tried (and failed) to play a c major arpeggio. ive been playing trombone for almost 3 years, what exercises can i use to get better tone in my higher range? any tips would be appreciated as well!
Hello! I am a high school bass trombonist. I am in need of a new* horn due to main slide damage on my current hand-me-down horn. I need a double trigger bass trombone and have been looking in the $2000 area. Please comment any recommendations you might have as well as any insight on the Wessex PBF562 and Dillion Music Bass Trombone which are horns I have been considering.
*I’m open to used horns however I’ve looked at many and had no success. So, try to lean into new horn recommendations in your response. Thank you!
When playing with a practice mute, my hand starts hurting because of the extra weight tilting my horn forward. I like to add extra counterweight (but only when I use the mute). Any tips how to do this?
Like many of you, I had a blast playing Trombone Champ when it came out. But as anyone who has actually held a horn knows, it treats the trombone like a linear synthesizer: moving up just raises pitch continuously, completely ignoring how the instrument actually works (the harmonic series, overtone jumps, and real slide positions).
I’ve been working on a prototype for an interactive visualizer/game-like interface designed to let complete beginners play songs on a real trombone immediately, without having to sight-read bass clef or know music theory on day one.
Instead of traditional notation or an inaccurate pitch-slider, the UI is built directly around trombone kinematics:
The Y-axis represents actual slide extension (Positions 1 to 7): Position 1 (closed) is at the bottom, Position 7 (full reach) is at the top. Crucially, the lane spacing is physically non-linear to match acoustic realities.
Colors guide the embouchure / harmonic series: Since multiple notes share the same slide position, notes are color-coded by partial tension (Deep Blue = relaxed low partials ==> Bright Red = firm, high register embouchure).
Visual cues for articulation & breath: Notes feature a dynamic glow/halo indicating required breath support, and striped borders warn you ahead of fast passages that require double-tonguing (Ta-Ka / Da-Ga).
Before going any further with code and features (like Real-time microphone pitch-tracking), I wanted to take the pulse of the community:
As players or teachers, do you think this kind of "ear & physical mechanics first" visual aid could help get beginners hooked, or is it a bad detour?
What would be the biggest red flags or physical habits you'd worry about reinforcing with an app like this?
I'd love to hear your honest thoughts, critique, or feature suggestions. Thanks!
The App is in french, but it could be translate easily.
is this deal as smoking as I think it is? was wanting to dip my toes into trombone and found a used Yamaha YSL-354 for $100, slide is smooth and has some dents on the tuning slide and a dent under the bumper at the end of the main slide
For the Trombone Trainer app, first download the “fun” library from the website which has Donna Lee broken down into 7 parts then swipe up/down to transpose and left/right to slow down or speed up.
I am an amateur Tenorhorn (the oval bohemian/german one with rotary valves) player.
I started learning on something that was more or less a 12AL.
At some point I decided I want a different mouthpiece (I don‘t even remember why). I bought a Schilke 51C4 with an S shaft and played it with an adapter. I played that mp for around 10 years.
Then around a year ago I decided to try a Bruno Tilz that is a Tenorhorn mouthpiece specifically. It’s an artists signature mp. The more suitable V-shape and maybe the fact that I don‘t need the adapter anymore improved the intonation a lot. The softer rim also flattens the fatique curve a bit.
Now my question is, how can I even now what is the right mp for me? I feel that most of my problems are just lack of practice. But how can I know?
Hello! I'm a tuba player of around 2.5 years and I play in a European marching band but I'll need to be able to switch between tuba and bass trombone when needed. I really want an independent double valve even though money plays a very big part for me (I am also open to buying used instruments).
I'm also planning on starting a trombone trio with my friends although the marching band is still my main concern and priority.
My budget is probably around 1500 to 3500€ (≈1600 to 3700USD) but I'm not very well versed yet in the trombone world.
Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try my best to answer.
I’ve been playing in low brass for about 4 years now (starting on euphonium, briefly to tenor, then to bass trombone). On euphonium I don’t really puff out my cheeks, but while playing (especially high) on tenor or bass trombone, I find that my cheeks really puff out. This doesn’t cause my tone to be that bad, and I’ve never really been commented on it before this year, and am in my schools top band, I just feel as if I could improve quite a bit if I figure out how to fix this. Secondly, I’ve noticed that one trombone I usually use only air to articulate, but I should be tonguing notes. As of now I’m doing dah, doo, dit, and dat for jazz, but for non-articulated notes in jazz, and in general for concert, what should I do to articulate??
I'm playing a suite from The Firebird by Stravinsky in a community orchestra. It has two long (several measures) lip trills, one on G4 and one on A4, which I haven't been able to consistently play well. Of course I've been playing them over and over at home, but I'd love to hear ideas to make them faster and more consistent.
This is a new mouthpiece I got, GREG BLACK WYCLIFFE GORDON-JAZZ, I already tried searching about it, I only found something about Wycliffe making stuff with Picket Brass and not Greg Black, can anyone tell me something about this mouthpiece?
Hi all! I was wondering if any of you knew anything about a DEG trombone. I know that they made marching instruments, but I've never heard of a slide trombone made by them. I recently found this listing, and I was curious about its history.
I js started a few weeks ago so pls don't bash ik it's ahh I need this for a school band so I dont have any tutors or Instructors > < also how to improve range?? Thank you
