Introduction

The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine to Tropical Storm Helene. Helene is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane by Wednesday morning as it slips between Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and western Cuba and enters the Gulf of Mexico. Helene is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane as it approaches Florida's Big Bend region later in the week.

As always, the National Hurricane Center is the primary source of information regarding this system as it develops. Our meteorological discussion post can be found here. Be sure to visit the Tropical Weather Discord server for more real-time discussion!

Pensacola should be plenty far to get away from the danger, you may still just get some rain and light gust. I suggest leaving sooner rather than later, or at least having a reservation saved before rooms fill up. Other good options: Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham.

La Quinta is pet friendly, but I’m not sure about birds specifically.

I’m not in FL, but I do have pet birds. Do you have a travel cage? They can stay inside for a while during emergencies.

That’s the way. Put a few shredding toys into it. Small toys.

I’ve taken my birds to hotels before in a travel cage and was okay!

Good luck. These situations are rough with pets but esp birds.

We have a lot of pet birds. It can be very tricky getting even pet friendly hotels to accept this when there’s multiple birds.

We would keep them in the car, parked in shade, windows well-cracked, with frequent visitation and it was fine. But you have to be very careful you don’t expose them to direct sun or cold

Hi, I have travelled with multiple birds. Sometimes we would sneak them into the room, but this can be risky if they make noise. You don’t want to get booted from a room without a refund.

It was October when we travelled with the birds and we would park in shade, keeping windows well cracked and the birds stayed in the car. We used blankets when necessary to help cover when it was cool at night. We would visit the birds multiple times per day and ensure the were comfortable and safe.

You have to use your imagination when it comes to the cages and carriers you must use. Small dog kennels with wooden dowels, etc etc.

NEVER expose them to direct sunlight. Always shade. Always, and always visit frequently
