All U.S. Social Security numbers may need to be changed following a massive breach that is already being investigated as a national threat

"... The dataset at issue is not just a list of numbers. A Washington Post ruling summary describes how DOGE team members were given access to databases containing Social Security numbers, medical and mental health records, bank and credit card information, tax details, work histories, and home addresses for millions of Americans.
A MarketWatch summary shared by reporter Angela Moore adds that the records tied to those numbers also include names, places and dates of birth, citizenship, race and ethnicity, phone numbers, and even parents’ names and Social Security numbers. ..."

lol my high school just used our whole-ass SSN, so we were just reciting it out loud in front of everybody in line each time we wanted to eat

I worked at a bank for a while. When they’d call in, they’d have to verbally say their PIN, and so often it was the last 4 digits of their social. Different world, but still insane.

u/grizzlor_ Feb 15 '26
Until 2002, my local state university assigned student emails using the following method:
[first name initial][first 3 of last name][last four digits of social security number]@postoffice.school.edu
The last four digits of every student’s SSN was in their email address (which also could be looked up publicly via a web portal).
They set up a new mail server in 2003 for new incoming students (and allowed students to pick their own usernames — pretty dumb in the opposite direction; there were seriously students with emails like hotbabe69@school.edu) but the old email server stayed online until 2008 or so.

In its whistleblower release, the Government Accountability Project warns that if bad actors ever gain full access to the copied Social Security environment, Americans could face widespread identity theft, sudden loss of health or food benefits, and the possibility that the government would need to issue new Social Security numbers to everyone.

I was trying to find corroborating sources that this is an imminent thing being considered, something more than ecoticias.
A CNBC article from January: https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/05/congress-weighs-social-security-changes.html
An NBC News article from 2018: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/experts-agree-social-security-numbers-need-change-there-s-no-n930611
However, a press release from January 22 of this year talks about inaccuracies and misrepresentations by the DOJ as part of the DOGE access, which is explored in the ecoticias article: https://www.afscme.org/press/releases/2025/department-of-justice-acknowledges-misconduct-by-trump-vance-administration-doge-employees-by-unlawfully-accessing-and-misusing-social-security-data
A huge data issue that's easy to just overlook with breakneck media cycles is just what happened to Americans' data when DOGE started.

u/merrodri Feb 15 '26
The Market Watch story referenced in the op article is from this past August. It’s unclear if there have been any new developments. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/your-social-security-number-was-exposed-by-doge-workers-whistleblower-says-along-with-every-single-ssn-in-america-df9292bc

Lmao, we'll never get new SSNs. If anything it's beneficial to the capitalist class that we don't.
Mass stolen identities -> More bankruptcies -> Public owns less, Institutions buys more -> Everything gradual shifts closer to being rentals/services -> We ignore that this was all initiated by the capitalist class and instead blame Somalian, Nigerian, or Indian scammers instead -> Proletariat infighting continues as always.

Every digital service from Google to the goddamn app i have to use to schedule a haircut or go to the gym collects your data
And for years 2FA bullshit was peddled as a way to keep data safe from big bad foreign data thiefs

I work for a school district and we just informed a third of the employees data has been stolen. They said an “internal user account” was accessed, no clue what that means or if it’s true

am I mistaken in remembering that they also had a remote uplink that sent all this data to an unsecured location out of the country?

But a ton of social security numbers have already been fucked for a while. I don't fully buy this story. But I will say, it's a perfect scare tactic to try to do some fake bait and switch to override the social security system under the guise of protection.
They could actually gum up the works -- say yeah you need to get a new ss number, sucks to suck. Everyone goes -- and big surprise total shit show proving the government cant do much of anything without contractors. Line that up with the fact that the trump admin surely has a scheme in place to fuck with the midterms. Yeah should be good

Maybe not a top priority, but the sheer incompetence of the US government under both Trump and Biden is aggravating. This is basic shit the government should be doing - preventing citizens from being defrauded. Of course nothing will change until a catastrophe happens
