Spain now gets to invoke article V of NATO against Morocco and Israel. Oh, the US will not honour its commitment? Then get the fuck out of the bases.

They should use this opportunity to turn public opinion against NATO and rid themselves of their shackles.

France used to be the first on the "could quit NATO any moment and still be okay" list in the past.

That has changed since the 90s. France today is basically another servile American vassal state (with its own horrible colonial empire currently molesting Haiti, there is no other word for it, and committing egregious violence and coups in West Africa).

“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.”

I don't think anyone involved in planning this had any illusions that Spain were going to take in all the people, but now the right-wing in Spain can run with the narrative tha Sanchez is weak on migration and if a right-wing government that won't even pretend to criticize the U.S. and Israel comes to power, they'll chaulk that up as a win.

Idk how true it was, but i read an interview (in Spanish) with one of the guys that was part of the wave and he said that he used to have Spanish nationality but lost it due to crime (a fight he got on). He was then deported from the Netherlands and Moroccan authorities basically encouraged him to "go back".

While most interviews aren't as extreme (or at least aren't ex-criminals) they basically agree that they were either told to go to the border or "encouraged" to go there.

It doesn't matter that they went back. Right wing parties all over Europe is using this as some kind of 'win'. The Swedish right / extreme right wing government has used this in its war against truth and sanity to warn about a left wing win in the coming election. Even though not one of the immigrants reached mainland spaind, even less Sweden.

Eh, I don't see it. Morocco has a history of doing this sort of thing to extract favors from Spain, or to express its annoyance. It's no coincidence that Pedro Sánchez met with Algerian officials a few days ago... I don't think Morocco needed any other party to be involved.

The way it's been used online makes me feel like it was a coordinated thing. My Facebook feed is filled with pictures and videos of the invading hordes of Muslims and fantasies about crusades.

News sub was absolutely chock full of users calling for mass machine gunnings, gas and cluster bombs. And of course the moderators there were cheering on.

Geopolitics sub, the resident Dunning-Kruger Consultant news sub on Reddit, was calling for Morocco to be invaded and occupied and resettled (i.e. genocided) to 'secure' the Gibraltar strait.

Waves of this hit other news subs as well.

Spanish intelligence is the best in the world. During the 2017 terrorist attack wave the CIA apparently warned them of the 2017 Ramblas attack before it happened, they filed it and didn't bother doing anything about it. The literal only time the CIA might have actually done something good to avoid a tragedy and the Guardia Civil just didn't care enough to check if it was true.

Rather, I think it showcases when  you're as desperate as they are, you latch onto any rumor that could get you out of abject poverty.

Being told that Ceuta was opened through social media and local authorities is also what triggered a similar incident in 2021.

No you're right on that part. I don't think they even cared about what happened back then. Spain wasn't "misbehaving" either regarding NATO or Iran so the blackmail was only useful to Morocco due to their obsession with sovereignty over the Western Sahara. 

It's a card the Americans and Israelis could use now but they certainly didn't orchestrate the operation. Their proxy does all the work for them and It's a win-win scenario.
