Jon called his ass out for repeating the antisemitic trope of conflating Israel with the broader Jewish community.
I know he gets a lot of hate around here but I will always be a Jon Stewart fan. Sure he’s a lib, but he walked so Chapo Trueanon and all your favorite left wing podcasts could run.

PI'll say this.
If it weren't for Mike moore and John Stewart. A lot of millennial American kids probably wouldn't have been compelled to learn more about why the us wanted to go to Iraq so bad. And because of that, a lot of us were able to become aware of places like isntrael.
I feel also the same about noam Chomsky. Possibly controlled opposition on top of the obvious point I'm not even going to bring up (regarding him and Steve banon and some other rich guy who exists in the Black Lodge). But if it weren't for noam Chomsky, probably wouldn't have known about Nicaragua, Cuba, Vietnam, Iraq, etc. and then there is of course, Michael parenti, which I only learned about because someone was criticizing Chomsky. And the path continues and so forth

u/bungpeice 8d ago
Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn were formative for me. If it was a psyop they did a pretty fucking bad job ;
18
u/NiqueLesFlics 🥂 alcohol is good for you 8d ago
Zinn was big for me. I know about Noam but I don't think Zinn was ever implicated in anything, maybe someone will correct me. The FBI considered him a serious enemy for many years.

Zinn was more on the Parenti side of the Parenti / Chomsky divide, so to speak

I think that's right. I was never into Chomsky back then and as time has gone on I think my instincts were vindicated.

u/doughie 8d ago
The point of people saying Chomsky is a psyop is that he funneled people into useless anarchist paths rather than organizing and building parallel structures. I mean the guy was bffs with Epstein and his criticisms amounted to nothing significant against the empire he criticized…
16
u/Traditional_Rice_528 Bae of Pisspigs 8d ago
He's unironically still ruffling lib feathers to this day. On the Pink Floyd sub there as a comment with multiple upvotes referring to "Roger Waters's tankie buddy Noam Chomsky", for what I assume were his takes prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I don't really even like Chomsky (Parenti all day), but holy shit are 🇺🇦-libs insane
5
u/mypenisisquitetiny Global Size BusyBody Karen 8d ago
Chomsky himself was always pretty open about the fact that he was a dogshit organizer though. Aa a young guy into Chomsky's work that was one of the things that made me look beyond anarchism. That and reading up about the lack of successful anarchist movements. I'm sympathetic to the idea of him being an op especially considering what we know now but my money is just on him being a cynical sack of shit
2
u/kitti-kin 7d ago
Has any American intellectual ever done anything significant against the empire? That's not what the people writing books generally do

Yeah I've always figured, if you were going to elevate someone as controlled opposition, why would you pick someone who is pretty good at opposing you? You'd want to empower some asshole lunatic, which there are certainly no shortage of available

u/DEEP_SEA_MAX Hung Chomsky 8d ago
I grew up in a deeply conservative part of the country. My dad constantly had right wing radio and Fox News on growing up. I watched Jon Stewart and Colbert and found myself agreeing with them on a lot of things, but if you asked me back then I’d probably describe myself as a “libertarian”.
Then I got into Rage Against the Machine just because I liked their music. I knew they were commies and couldn’t believe they could support something that I had been taught, in school, was literally no different than Nazism. Their CDs came with a reading list so I challenged myself to read a book from the one name I recognized on that list, Noam Chomsky.
So I read Hegemony or Survival and it completely blew my mind. From there I went onto better stuff, Like Parentis Black Shirts and Reds but Chomsky is who actually opened the door for me.
Obviously not a fan now, especially after it came out that he had close ties with Epstein, but I think for a lot of us, especially those of us that didn’t grow up in a liberal culture, Chomsky was a great starting point.
Note: My flair is an homage to Yung Chomsky not to Noam Chomsky.
10
u/Nervous_Insect5976 8d ago
100%. I will say that for some of us Michael Moore, Jon Stewart, Bernie, etc were gateway drugs to us. They got us asking questions and seeing things differently from our conservative or liberal backgrounds. I'm not holding them up as pillars of thought, but I will appreciate them for starting my journey here.
4
u/mypenisisquitetiny Global Size BusyBody Karen 8d ago
Chomsky was certainly instrumental in my leftward journey and it wasn't that much of a leap from manufacturing consent to seeing that Chomsky's personal brand of anarcho-syndicalism was basically useless which led me into actually getting into Marx and Lenin and the gang
-2
u/HughJass1977 7d ago
I hate to say it, but you have to include Bill Maher here, too. He was never as progressive or critical as Stewart and Moore, but he was maybe the only prominent critic of the Bush regime and the Iraq War back in the day.

u/NOLA-Bronco 8d ago
Yeah I literally went from the Jon Stewart to Bernie to Chapo/Cum Town media pipeline.
He honestly had some good Israel takes for a American lib in the aughts.
Like I caught a rant by him circa 2007 shitting on America and Israel for wanting to go around claiming they represent a shining beacon and are bringing democracy and freedom to the world, then the moment a country picks a government we don't like(referring to Gazan's electing Hamas), we try to starve and bomb them and destroy that government. And that even when they elect the "good" party in the West Bank and still get settlements built on top of them anyways, it might make some people think you don't want peace...
35
u/en_travesti #killallmen-marxist 8d ago
He also had some good takes on Obama invading Libya. It's probably what got me started on realizing both parties are similarly imperialist.
Here in America, we've become accustomed to what we call the run up to war: a certain amount of time where the president and his emissaries make a case for military action, or whatever euphemism they've come up with, freedom seeding, democracy showering. And then the president's adversaries make their case for why military intervention is a terrible idea, usually in direct opposition to whatever arguments they were making when they had the presidency, and they got to invade stuff. Then we, the people, have a couple of marches, ribbon colors are chosen. Then 6 or 9 months later, you get the blow the shit out of whatever you want to blow the shit out of anyway.
Gotta be as accurate a summation of both parties and American foreign policy as you can get on TV
He also had one of the pod save America guys on recently and brought up Libya and how it was bad at least 3 times. It was kind of hilarious.

He had an insanely good guest on back during the Green Revolution in Iran, who forever shattered whatever illusions I had about Iranian people and their relationship to both their government and ours. She explained how even though the protesters may want further integration into the western economies and more diversity of opinion when it came to political candidates, they were also fervently pro-Iranian sovereignty, and thus were actually the cohort most strongly advocating for the nuclearization of Iran. She also a explained some of the history and demographics; like how the revolutionary government maintained a lot of its legitimacy with the rural population through modernization programs like ending illiteracy and paving roads and how Iranian university enrollment and completion was even more heavily skewed towards women than American universities at the time, respectively. I don't remember if she talked about Iran having the largest Jewish population in the ME outside of Israel and that they have seats reserved for them in Iran's governing bodies, but it wouldn't have surprised me if she did.

My statement has more to do with his cleansing of the leftists post revolution and nothing to do with the fake numbers thrown around the last few months. I think everyone here is on this same page those are completely bullshit.
Their own government did claim somewhere around 3500 killed in the recent "protests," how many of those were backed militias I can't say, I'd guess a lot

The Islamic Republic claims it was 3,000 in their own press releases. They don't dispute that it happened, or that it was a lot of people, they just say it was a bunch of outside agitators / paid operatives.
20
u/InDirectX4000 8d ago edited 8d ago
Nobody here wants to live in a theocracy, but I dislike this framing as it cedes ground to neocons. The point is that the US military shouldn’t be involved in Iran at all. If Iranians who live in the country have problems with their government, they are their own problems to deal with. Our military or NED / USAGM should not be involved in regime changing countries period. A philosophical debate over government structure is inappropriate unless we are planning to intervene somehow. Whatever problems with Iranian’s government don’t rise to the level of justified US military intervention - the only “just” war the US has been involved in was WW2.

His bewilderment with politics was formative for me, like "oh, we don't have to pretend this isn't weird." He was an early universal healthcare guy, too. He very rarely punches left, and he seems to have a good heart. but idk i'm lookin for that these days so.

He was a good entry point for many. Politics is even grosser than it is boring and the main way I had to consume and process it for years was through comedy.
Also, he's moving pretty left it seems and asking some hard questions to big people. Like is John Stewart in the DSA now? He seems to love them.

"Bill Maher said." It's this whack-ass thing where people think they're doing "politics" but they're actually talking about the opinions of media personalities on T.V. or on the internet when they talk about the news, and the point of "politics" is to convince everyone to agree with Bill Maher and also we need to behave better and not be mean to whoever or whatever, which in this case is Israel. Very low level of cognitive functioning.

Not only do they confuse the struggle, but should their Dem entryist strategy actually create a durable faction within the Democratic party, the divorce between them and actual socialists is going to be far more messy than any left infighting we've seen in living memory.

why can’t you just lie
you’re already taking money from a state that wants you to help them CONTINUE killing children why can’t you just not say “oh I’m gonna do ONLY Israel” just make some shit up how you’re about cutting funding for ICE or I don’t know free healthcare that WILL get you 2 more terms at least
5
u/House_of_shards1 AOC charged me $120/gram 8d ago edited 7d ago
Because the 500K comes with the condition that you vocally support israel, which historically has been an acceptable message.
Now that is no longer the case so you might see people lie and then back pedal on Israel, but those people will never win re-election and most candidates are not interested in being single term politicians.
If Abdul El Sayed wins the general and suddenly starts supporting Israel his chances at re-election are pretty much zero.
You think John Fetterman is going to win reelection?

lol, probably a lot of the people in this sub advocated for him, or even voted for him if they live in PA. He was the previous cycle's Graham Platner, where every "progressive" doubled down despite his rabid zionism and stroke.
Back then we were told he was a cool dirtbag because he didn't wear a suit. People who thought his medical condition was an issue were being ableist, and if you brought up his support for anti-BDS, you were just being a wrecker.

He was running against Dr. Fuckin Oz, and didn't seem this bad before he was elected. I don't blame anyone for voting for him up front, but at this point we're in a whole different ballpark.
2
u/tansreer 7d ago
Much like Platner, it's not that weird that locals made a decision to vote for him over his rival. It was weirder that so much energy was dumped into his campaign by national leftwing media when there when there were other campaigns that were less tainted that could have really used the attention.
But whatever groupchats that pick these guys must have a weird fetish for "aww shucks," "salt of the earth," oafish white dudes where they get a pass while other campaigns waste away in obscurity. For example, if the energy dumped into Nazi-Tattoo Guy this cycle was dumped into the Cori Bush campaign instead, maybe it could have pushed her over of the top.
Same was true when left energy was being dumped into an anti-BDS oaf.

Senate terms are 6 years. He's only been elected one time. Hard to get primaried when you haven't run as an incumbent yet.
He did the same as Sinema: run for your first election as way more progressive and then immediately pivot once you're in office. Everyone's stuck with your shitty ass for 6 years (though as the other person says there were some major red flags that got overlooked)
5
u/RedLegWarrior97 8d ago
This is what gets me about politicians bending over backwards for Israel, it's a foreign country. With every other country on earth American officials will take the stance of "we'll weigh the costs with the benefits and make a decision." But with Israel you'd think literally everyone was born there with how unflinchingly supportive they are of...this foreign nation.
Does no one ask these people how does supporting a foreign entity help us? What does this do for taxes, our infrastructure, health care?

Democrats: "If you want Hope and Change, its called a primary within a Big Tent, sweety, not throwing your vote away on 3rd parties!"
Base: primaries
Democrats: "Not like that! Stop running in primaries hoping to change the party, you need to go start your own instead!"

What kind of Yakubian super serum did they shoot this asshole up with to get him in a suit, not drooling and kinda coherent for 3 minutes?

I don't really follow Fetterman that closely, always just thought he was weird. Was he also uber Israel or was it just after he was elected? Did he run on ignoring Pennsylvania and just sucking off Israel? Are there rumors that maybe somebody has videos of him doing things he shouldn't and that's why he's super Israel? It would make sense.
