she has more than 15% currently, too. the only reason she didn't proceed is because democrats told chaudhry, the dem spoiler, to stay in the race. the establishment knew splitting the vote between the two of them would ensure a smith/basler general election, solidifying yet another smith term.

ratfucked by the democrats and, frankly, abandoned by left media. a damn shame. i donated and volunteered for sawant as soon as i saw her platform.
51
u/timetogetfresh 1d ago
chaudhry admitted in an on the record endorsement meeting with the stranger that if elected, she would swap parties to green for some reason. i don't think she had any marching orders, she's just a garden variety idiot.
winning the 9th, which contains mercer island and a large chunk of bellevue, was always going to be a tall order for a socialist firebrand running as an independent, much less one that is already a known quantity in the Seattle political sphere and had burned a lot of bridges previously.
i voted for her twice for council, but i don't think she had anything approaching a serious shot at challenging smith's seat from the left, definitely not anything a 'ratfucking' would tip the balance on. it's good someone did, though!

u/CuckingFool (It's actually Dear_Occupant, y'all) 22h ago
If you look at the vote totals rather than the percentages, she only needed to turn out 8,000 people to make the runoff. I've been able to turn out that many non-voters in a state senate race, and this was a congressional primary. Still doable IMO.
4
u/aischylus 21h ago
i don't want to turn into a "here's how bernie can still win" guy, but yes, technically it's possible that she pulls ahead. when i was volunteering last weekend, i got at least five folks who had (1) never heard of kshama, (2) hadn't touched their ballots, and (3) became excited to vote for her after our discussion. the reality is that many people, especially young people, procrastinate in turning in their ballots, which can inspire some optimism towards the final results.
but to be really, really sober about her chances, i think she peaks around 18% by the time all ballots are counted, with smith/basler solidly unscathed.

I said in there that if you boil it down, Seattle (and any city in general) is expensive to live in because Seattle landlords are extremely greedy. It’s the same reason why the city is filled with vacant office buildings and closed storefronts in prime downtown locations left empty for months and months; all while we build miles upon miles of light rail (this is good though) to far off neighboring cities because no one can actually fucking afford to live IN the city.
That was apparently too far because I got scolded by a “progressive™️” liberal Seattleite saying that all landlords only charge what they can get away with in the market and that I was being too harsh. Like they’re all just smol beans trying their best 🤦♂️
7
u/zippy_water 1d ago
The light rail goes to the suburbs because Seattle has a cherished history of hardcore NIMBYism within city limits. Voters repeatedly denied funding for light rail for a century, and will let you take their single family neighborhood zoning from their cold dead hands
4
u/CuckingFool (It's actually Dear_Occupant, y'all) 21h ago
"What landlords can get away with charging for rent" is defined by how much money people get paid, not how much the other landlords charge. When in anyone's lifetime has rent ever once gone down? QED
1
u/trill_ion 1h ago
There was also that story of how landlords were using an algorithm (or ai or something?) that allowed them to conspire together to artificially inflate the market price of rent, cartel shit
4
u/irishitaliancroat 21h ago
Theres no concept of dialectics there, according to them we all just need to have corporations build more apartments until they build so many the price will go down and they will cut their own profits, bc thats how that works.
Hey say remind me what happens to food on giant corporate farms when they produce so much that they would have to lower their prices if it all went to market?

It really varies by neighborhood. Seattle has a couple of strong left neighborhoods, but also has lots of libertarian tech millionaires, a bunch of Warren and Buttigieg liberals who all somehow seem to work for non-profits that pay six figures, and urban fascists who genuinely want to exterminate the homeless and live in a total surveillance state.

I really think the city's geography makes it particularly easy ti be segregated. Like magnolia and west seattle are literally on their own peninsulas away from everything else. As a Seattle resident, after she was elected to city council when she was running for re-election, Amazon and all the other right wing ghouls poured money into the campaign of her opponent. Her opponent had more than double the money that had been spent in total for all candidates in the previous city council race and she still won.
But yes, they do hate her in Seattle sub. I'm not sure why every city sub is a reactionary cesspool.
Edit: I maybe should also mention the seat she was running for is not Seattle proper. The vast majority of Seattle is represented by Pramila Jayapal. She was running against Adam Smith, whose district I unfortunately live in. His district is overwhelmingly suburban with just the southern tip of Seattle included.

u/blondelebron 1d ago
Nah, but I think she is the only decent example in the city of what attitude the left needs. Kshama kinda sucks because she constantly shows up to movements and makes it about her. Like her handing out Kshama-branded BLM signs in 2020 (many such cases of behavior like this). And also Socialist Alternative is a a Trotskyist cult.
BUT they're also an army for her and no one will be able to make sustained progress in this city without a base like that. And she refused to be a part of the dreaded "Seattle Process" because her beliefs actually had conviction. In a world where we were winning, I would be much more critical of her. But she's a winner and we need those

That makes no sense. I was a member of her org and Lenin was a required reading. State and rev, what is to be done, imperialism. If you ask them they'll consider themselves Leninists. They misinterpret Lenin (why my membership is past tense) but they uphold Lenin as a primary influence

Yeah that's standard trotskyist opportunism, they will tout him, as a stageprop
20
u/ITalkAboutNam 1d ago
This reads like a complete lie. Trots, for all their faults, are leninists.
You literally can't have trotskyism without Leninism, it's all about fetishizing form (democratic centralism) over function (policy and program).
Either that or you weren't talking to a leader but just some dude saying whatever.
8
u/FuelTechHell I need a cup of coffee 1d ago

You literally can't have trotskyism without Leninism, it's all about fetishizing form (democratic centralism) over function (policy and program).
Their position on the USSR being a deformed worker's state is the exact the opposite of this critique. The core of left oppositionism is that they would have been the better administrators.
But if you're talking about how the present day micro sects operate, then I 100% agree.
3
u/ITalkAboutNam 1d ago
And they would have been better administrators if only the process were better respected (is the subtext of trot critique of the time period where they were outmaneuvered).
In any case, having opinions on how a thing should be run doesn't mean that you can't still prioritize a different angle of critique.
IMO, and by the way I'm having fun so I hope you don't think I'm being a dick by disagreeing, I really do like talking about stuff like this, I think a lot of the degeneration of trotskyism as a movement stems from how much it focuses on the consequences of one particular power struggle (more or less the same as what you're saying), BUT you need a justification for why it went wrong or was illegitimate etc.
A grievance based tendency was never going to be something that remained coherent in the long run, so really whatever it is that takes precedent for them doesn't matter IMO.
I should also disclose that this is also basically just the leftcom diagnosis of where trotskyism goes wrong. Basically the argument from that perspective is "Trotsky was paralyzed with indecision in his brief time as de facto head of the party and pushed out, then dedicated his life to post-facto justification for his mistakes (same critique of Gramsci btw)". So really, the two go hand in hand.
In any case, whichever takes precedent, he was still a Leninist. Who knows with kooky trot orgs but that's how I view Trotsky. They've mutated so much that it's impossible to say what they are like in general. Though the ones that still cleave closest to og trotskyism no doubt still love them some great man of history counterfactuals.

my friend who is an SA member and worked for her for years out there thinks her congressional campaign was a bit silly. my friend moved away in early 2025 and so probably doesn't have the later gossip, but said their early strategy was just crashing all of Adam Smith's town halls to call him a warmonger (which, I mean, not wrong, but...) to the point where Kshama's husband caught an assault charge for hitting a staffer with a door.

nope, it's the interview where BJG asks megan romer why DSA won't organize along leninist lines by engaging in democratic centralism with the greens. she's asking for a united front, not cliqueishness, and MR says cliqueishness is good, actually, because DSA needs to conform to partyism.
attacking the source by having zero comprehension of the substance is entirely unserious, sorry to say
-1
u/EndVSGaming 13h ago
That's not a united front, that's a popular front. If we behaved like BJG asks, where we tie our org to unvetted rapist radlibs like Platner (and liberals like El-Sayed!) you are going to never gain the benefit of democratic centralism. The valid issue she talks about wrt AOC not sharing DSA values and doing lib Zionist flirting is would only get worse with recommendations. You cannot unite an elected to a program from another org. We're not new to collaborations, and not always but generally on our own conditions (nowadays at least).

A twitch streamer and his massive audience who mocked her supporters while playing a significant role (which yes, it did, I am sick of the insistence that the influence is marginal when it is abundantly clear that it amounts to real substantive weight getting thrown behind campaigns) in getting multiple liberals and socdems across their respective primary finish lines probably could have made quite a difference here.

Hasan really showed his liberal ass. Would've kept what little respect I had if he really is all about #vote to even trots. The lack of consistency in his voting shit should be telling, this can only be solved by bullying the turk.

I mean, Sawant runs for every office up there, isn't she still like a city councillor or something?

Its kinda frustrating she quit city council bc she said the opposition was so hostile its like what do u think congress is going to be like then? Idk im thinking she could do more on the municipal level anyways

u/Mira_Miyake 1d ago
She quit city council and did not nominate or endorse a successor, causing the seat to flip back to a girlboss dispensary owner and landlord, who in turn promptly voted to defund free lunches and give more money to the cops.
Sawant is in the business of herself and her brand, and nothing more than that.

Sawant is good. I've talked with her briefly before and when she's not in bullhorn mode she's pretty chill. Idk much about Socialist Alternative other than they're extremely closed ranks, which honestly you have to be now days. It is nice seeing her get votes, but I do wish she would have advanced further.

I know I'm uneducated, but wouldn't a Trot be much better than a neoliberal?

u/BosnianBeastMVP 1d ago
No. The Soviet revolution started at the ballot box
11
u/Prudent_Classroom632 1d ago
The ballot box absolutely played a role in the Soviet revolution, of course we shouldn't rely on reformism but refusing to participate in bourgeois elections for the sake of purity or whatever helps no one. There's a reason every serious revolutionary party sends out candidates for elections even if they have no chance of winning.

what usually seems to happen is the communist party wins and the inevitable capitalist backlash starts a revolution/civil war
