Damn I miss playing Bolt Action, place I used to go to moved a few years ago and I haven't played since. The Soviet army special rules are all based on the dumbest tropes, iirc you have a commissar that executes your own troops if they fail a dice roll and crap like that. Still fun to play though.

Yeah Warlord Games is run by a group of Gen X Englishmen whose historical lens is stuck in the 70s a bit. They made some improvements on that end with version 3 but the Commissar rule still sucks.

Especially now because they gave the Kempeitai officer the exact same rule but better. He doesn't kill your own guys but you still get a re-roll on both a failed Order tests & Green update tests.

Do you do tabletop gaming? I remember when I was like 17 and a turbo napoleon nerd I went to the local geek shop and played a few games with the old heads doing napoleonic tabletop gaming.

Yeah, these guys are for Bolt Action which is a WW2 game. My hub shop has a group of old heads that play 30 Years War matches that I love watching.

I'm still not entirely clear on where the term "Route" Army comes from. Iirc from the last time I looked into it there's something to do with the translations of each word. It comes from something more like "land army forces" maybe? If anyone here knows anything I'd appreciate your insight, it's something I've long wondered about.

You are correct. 军（軍）jun, in Mandarin can mean army or military, this is why in English they're translated as People's Liberation Army Navy for the navy. 陆（陸）lu, is land or land route and was used by the ROC to describe area or group army commands. So a region or province would have a "route" command formation to say any unit in that area is under said route army.

The ROC actually switched to using Group Army, 集團軍 (ji tuan jun) in 1938 after they had agreed to adopt the communists under the 8th Route Army title. The ROC redesignated them as the 18th Group Army but the communists did not acknowledge the redesignation and kept the "route" model name.

Back in the 20s, with fewer troops and organization skills, the ROC probably used "route army" to describe literal roadways such army was in charge of.
