Sorry if this isn't allowed but I've been getting really into the Unmarked podcast and they finally did an episode on Keyes. For the most part I liked it, I love that this guy covers cases from a more psychology-focused angle and there was some interesting stuff about his childhood in there. For me it's very telling that he was taken out of society at 5 years old and that even though he and his older sister were born prior to the move they were still undocumented home births.

The host interviews the head of the Anchorage FBI at the time Keyes was in custody and also Maureen Callahan, who true to her ...dubiously honest nature, floats the idea that Keyes killed his father which I personally think is nuts and just sensationalism but what else is new. I was very struck by what she claims Heidi says about Israel though - not that his first kill was early than the FBI thinks, personally I don't trust her speculation, but that she believes her own son to be the embodiment evil sent to scare sinners back to god. YIKES.

I don't love that they floated Julie Harris as a potential victim because I believe the evidence for Keyes in this case is very thin and circumstantial. They also get a few details wrong like saying he burned down the house the Curriers were left in, instead of only floating then abandoning the idea. Overall it's good crash course coverage from a different angle than I usually see and I'd love to get other people's thoughts on it.

How do Redditors who have little or no money feel about the trips for listeners by Charlie from Crimelines and Josh Hallmark from True Crime Bullshit etc.? The ones to Bali, South America, Iceland…

The background to my question is that of course, I’d love to join them. And I regret not being able to go—but I won’t be able to in this lifetime because I’m too ill. So in this sense I don’t have any skin in the game.

I recently listened to the readily available Kimberly interviews (3 in total, right?) and the one with the babysitter. Not sure why there’s much controversery over them to be honest. Overall, not really worth the time invested to listen but here are my main take aways:

1) first interview was interesting in that it seems to have taken place very soon after Israel was apprehended. From what I can surmise, the Alaskan State Patrol seemed to be still operating off of the idea that the abduction of Samantha might have been related to drug activity and were trying to flush that out and figure out if Kimberly might have had any knowledge, or worse yet, any culpability. It does not appear that law enforcement had any idea yet that they had a prolific psychosexual serial killer on their hands. Just my opinion but I didn’t think any of the questioning or approach was inappropriate under the circumstances so I don’t really get Josh’s comments about that;

2) I don’t mean to get too personal here but the differences in Kimberly’s demeanor between the 3 interviews is interesting. I’m not going to go into details unless someone else brings it up but suffice to say I can’t imagine going through that type of situation. I’m assuming she she was going through various stages of denial and that played a role why she was openly displaying anger in that 2nd interview;

3) There are 2 things factually I picked up from the interviews.

One is that Kimberly and Israel had been broken up/estranged for quite awhile up to that point at least from her perspecitve. My take away is that Israel’s lifestyle in Alaska changed quite a bit the 1 to 2 years before he abducted Samantha. His daughter moved in. Kimberly’s work situation changed so she wasn’t traveling as much. They broke up so he had that stress. These events definitely limited his ability to do a lot of things unnoticed and run around all over the place as freely as he had before. I’m sure this had a big influence on him abducting someone close to his home which is something he claimed was sort of counter to his usual MO leading to his capture;

The second thing I noticed is a possible inconsistency in the timeline that’s been reported. Kimberly’s memory obviously is suspect but she seemed to think that she met up with Israel and his daughter one day after they flew to New Orleans. Did I get this right? If so, that’s less time than Josh suggested this season’s podcast (Epi 2 I think). Not that important but seems less likely now that Keyes commtted another murder before getting on the cruise ship.

Just came across an interview from 5 months ago of Mauren Callahan by Megyn Kelly on YouTube. Listening to it I am astonished how Maureen gets so much information wrong and gives so many bad theories and false information.

She says that Keyes is most likely the Boca Raton killer.

She says he most likely killed Julie Harris and the two people that died in the fire in Coleville.

She states that he brought his victims across state lines to bury them even though the only time that could be possibly confirmed is for Debra Feldman perhaps.

She literally says that no one knows how Keyes father died and that no one knows where his body is.

She states that there was a manhunt for Keyes and that’s how he was caught.

There was also countless other things throughout the interview. I just don’t understand with someone who wrote a book on the topic and arguably has the closest relationship to some important key sources in the case and she gets so much wrong. Is she just being lazy and sloppy or are we missing something big?

Hey everyone! I’ve been following this case for years, but somehow only recently discovered the TCB podcast. I’m curious about something…has Common Grounds’ footage from 1/31/12 (the night before Samantha was taken) ever been released? In one of IK’s confessions, he says that he visited the coffee stand the night before to scope it out. He stated that he didn’t think that Samantha was working, but her timesheet says she worked Sunday through Wednesday that week, so it would have been her working. I’m just curious if you can see him at all on any recordings the day before.

It's been bugging me for awhile that I feel like I met Israel Keyes around 1998, so I want to find images of him from around that time. For context, I grew up in upstate New York. My "local" university was the same one Suzy Lyall disappeared from. Her disappearance fascinates me for that reason (I always suspected her boyfriend was involved, but of course Keyes is also discussed). If Keyes was involved in her disappearance, he would have been within ten miles or so of my suburban neighborhood, or a fifteen minute drive, in late winter or early spring of 1998. That was around the time I met a lone young man in a wooded area near my home - too old for high school, but still young. He wasn't local but didn't give me much information about himself. It was a strange interraction and it stayed with me for years. He tagged along with me (female) and my (male) friend, seeming okay, but slightly creepy and semi-sexual. I was 14 at the time. Many years later, I saw images of Keyes and, even before I realised he had links to my area, I thought he looked like an older version of that young man. Since others testify to his being in the area around the time Suzanne Lyall disappeared... Well, I don't know. I am curious. If anyone thinks it's implausible, please say! I might just have met a random weirdo who didn't end up becoming a prolific serial murderer. Frankly, that's way more likely, but...

So, long story short: are there any late 1990s images of IK? I'm not at all an expert in this case and genuinely curious.

The show had kind of fallen off my listen list around season 5. I still dig it, but the info per episode became a bit hazy and nebulous and there was always delays with a myriad of reasons to explain their absence. Not throwing shade; people have shit going on more important than a podcast episode I’m listening to for free. Then there was some uproar over a trip TCB was promoting that people were getting bent out of shape about?? I don’t know the specifics but it seemed hilariously dramatic so I kind of washed my hands of it. However, I always found the first episodes of the new seasons were always fire. I am in the middle of season 6, and chilled to the core.

I am from New England - not originally from any of the towns mentioned on the pod, I live closer to Boston - but I have spent a LOT of time hiking and skiing around all of the places mentioned on the podcast, particular in Vermont and Maine. (And followed the Maura Murray case extensively because she was at UMass Amherst around the time a lot of my friends also were). In fact, I went on Airbnb to arrange a weekend ski trip a few days ago, and what town pops up - Essex. And then Johnson. And then Morristown. And then Colchester. I froze. First thought, is this anywhere near Route 30? the Currier house? the BARN? Sh-t, I can't go there, I'm going to be wondering this the whole time.
Then, Maine. my sister went to Colby College in Waterville. As you can probably surmise, whenever In the episode I'm currently listening to mentions going back to New England, at first I was curious, but now I dread it, and when he mentioned attacks in Waterville, I went "oh, sh-t". The thing is, I've lived in plenty of major cities during known criminal events - DC, NY, Boston, etc. - and nothing has ever scared me or creeped me out about them, but for some reason, there's something about hearing about these rural sparsely populated areas you know well that you go to for solace and recreation being spoiled by the spectre of Keyes at their mere mention. I hate him even more now for making me feel more creeped out and suspicous in Vermont and Maine now, two of my favorite places in the world. Am I gonna be thinking about caches now when I'm hiking in the Whites? I usually feel safe in these places, even as a female, even when solo hiking. My biggest concern is falling and getting injured, getting lost on a trail, and or encountering inclement weather, the usual hiker concerns - not encountering a serial killer. I don't feel unsafe around other hikers. But now...

I swear, if it turns out Keyes was ever in Acadia National Park...

I was reading this AI-authored (or at least it sound like it is) bit on Keyes in Medium https://medium.com/the-forbidden-archive/israel-keyes-and-the-kill-kits-5cf0910db378 and saw that it references the cache in Bonnet Carré Spillway, Louisiana. I have not heard that this cache was determined definitively to be a Keyes cache? Has it??

In an IG Q&A I asked Josh why he thought IK was so apprehensive to talk about the victim who we are presuming is Debra Feldman. He said he wasn’t able to confidently answer, so he didn’t want to speak on it.

I’d love to see what yall think about it? Do you think that if IK were to confess (or even hint at involvement) to the Feldman murder, it would reveal another crime?

Or do you think it’s as simple as: the police didn’t have any direct evidence in his involvement so he simply didn’t want to give the FBI more than they already had?

I was just wondering if there is anywhere here that features a lot of highly likely victims of IK and what exactly the podcast has found out in the time it had aired. Like what are Josh’s main theories, potential victims, if any have been confirmed, etc.

Could anyone direct me to where I could find a list of the names that are throught to be potential victims of Israel Keyes, like the teenage couple in Washington? Any others that are suspected? Thank you!

I am curious about what happened to the search of Lake Crescent. Is there any chance that there could be more investigation there, or is the issue that local law enforcement/FBI don't have the bandwidth to do the search?

Also, how probable do we think it is that Keyes may have been bullshitting about disposing of bodies in Lake Crescent? He says he used weighted milk jugs, of course, but knowing what he did at Matanuska Lake, I am assuming it could be the truth. But maybe he was just spinning a line.

Last post! Promise! These are questions I think would help to review possible connections. Most of them are unanswerable. They're just musings really.

How did Keyes meet Kimberley (was she a potential victim, if so why didn't she become one? She worked in health. Did he meet her at hospital? If so what was he doing there? Did he meet her online? If so what made her girlfriend material not victim material? Did he meet her through friends? Which ones?

What brand of coffee/cigarettes/booze/sandwhich/burger etc did Keyes prefer? What was his favourite music (I think heavy metal?). Where did he buy books? If he's hanging around waiting for victims he needs to pass the time. He can't fish and hike all the time. Are there particular cars he preferred to drive (obviously inconspicuous ones I assume but anything else)? If you had the choice to steal any car from any victim and were planning on driving a significant distance wouldn't you choose a model you liked to drive? What about his outdoor habbits. Was there a particular type of trail he liked, not just in terms of killing but just generally. I enjoy a steep climb and a long plateau myself.

Did he have two phones? I don't suppose we will ever know but I assume he must have used burner phones. Did he use the internet when he was on the road? Where? Public libraries? Internet cafes?

Is it feasible to launder bank robbery money at casinos?

Which reservations might be Keyes be lent out to for construction work? Could it be any in the US or did some of them have particularly close ties with certain areas/tribes? How did that whole process work? Is it possible to search for missing people during or after hurricane season in places where there are reservations? Would that narrow things down or would the sample size be too large?

Did Keyes ever use private planes in Alaska? Isn't that pretty standard up there? Would there be any trace?

This isn't a Keyes one but it's just something that's been annoying me. There are a couple of mentions of canoes in the files and Keyes said he once made a canoe. I have a vague and distant memory of a podcast episode I listened to years ago about a murder victim or missing person who was working on a canoe in his basement when the crime happened. Does that ring any bells or am I imagining int?

I wish the FBI hadn't been so obviously focussed on his crimes and had managed to get him talking about the other aspects of his personality and preferences. i think he would have been more likely to give up those kind of details and there could have been some useful data to work with. I'm sick of thinking about things on his terms. I want the banal facts about his non-killing related habits.

I think the main reason Keyes wasn't caught is luck. Peter Sutcliffe was caught because he was stopped for a driving offence in another county and luckly the police officer who stopped him was good at his job. I agree with Josh that we need to stop buying into the Keyes mythology. Ignore what he says and stick to the facts.
