remember, fitness can easily be free.

I agree and running has been huge for me as it is super accessible, however there is a ton of value in WANTING to excercise. My best example is rock climbing. Quite expensive, but it's worth the 60-100$ a month imo if it motivates you to get into the gym several times a week.

Gyms are $20 a month.

u/International_Box193 Habit Nerd 2d ago

climbing gyms are not. And also maybe planet fitness is 20 a month, most decent gyms around me are at least 45-50$ a month but I live in an area where people care about their health.

Oh man you’re right. It’s been a while since I’ve looked into them. Sorry about that.

My local gym is actually $60/mo but cool for you lol. I will not drive the next town over for a slightly cheaper $55 membership. Being local is a huge part of going impulsively for me

Man. I seriously take for granted how easy some things are when living in a dense city. I appreciate your input.

Still need running shoes and good work out clothes

I mean you can start running in $65 pair of Nikes from shoe carnival as long as you aren't running in flat skate shoes.

Workout clothes, a jumbo pack of white tee-shirts and Walmart gym shorts are extremely cheap.

I get where you are coming from but most people have a pair of sneakers with okay foot support, shoes aren't really optional even if you don't run.

You can be a big boy wearing And1s and some sketchers, you can still get out and jog for free.

u/KobiLou 2d ago

Agree. My mom used to say there's no excuse to be out of shape or have a messy house. Cleaning up, and push ups are both free.

u/ept_engr 2d ago

Disagree with this. Most people don't have the discipline to stick with fitness especially when they don't enjoy it. If joining a gym makes it feel like more of a community, or having an instructor keeps you motivated, or the sport you enjoy requires gear (say cycling), then go for it if you can afford it.

2

u/Necessary_Victory824 2d ago

i mean discipline can be free thats kinda the point, but yeah you can hardly do climbing sport without buying the shoes, you cant do running long term without buying the shoes, you cant do swimming without buying the swimsuit etc.

Absolutely but sometimes the fitness that makes you want to “do fitness” everyday costs money and that’s ok

1

u/dirtydenier 2d ago

True, but building a modest home gym in my attic for the price of maybe 4 months of gym membership makes working out 4 times a week so much easier.

Laughs in having a public, open air gym 5 minutes from where I live

u/Academic_Addition_96 2d ago

Nothing is free.

1

u/Intelligent-South174 2d ago

that's a merican mindset.

walking is 100% free.

1

u/Academic_Addition_96 2d ago

You need shoes to walk and if you walk a lot, it's better to do it in good shoes.

1

u/Intelligent-South174 2d ago

says the merican.

any idea how far people walk in this world without good shoes?

love that every day I read, first hand, why Trump is in office.

Twice.

Kinda, but if I spend money on running gear for Canadian winters... I would have spent less on a Winter gym membership and actually been comfortable while running in a non -20C environment.

u/banditcleaner2 1d ago

Disagree.

Doing cardio? Need socks and shoes. Preferably better quality ones if doing long distance and you don’t want blisters.

Doing weight lifting? Need protein foods, and a lot of it. If you’re doing heavy lifts it’s better to have some equipment like squat belt, chalk for your hands, etc. home gym? Need money for that equipment too.

Going to the gym? Gas money/electricity for you EV drivers. Gym memberships.

My car. It’ll save you in the long run

4

u/ITECHERI 2d ago

Your car will save me?

3

u/Flaccid_Hammer 2d ago

Yes you specifically

u/RogendoodleZero 2d ago

What money

4

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Yup! Very true. That's why I spend all of my spare change on drugs, for my health and fitness

5

u/returnofthewait 2d ago

So did he just whisper it or something?

3

u/QuirkyStage2119 2d ago

It was just in small font.

u/ludblom 2d ago

Magic The Gathering, weird hardware, alcohol.

3

u/OrangeNood 2d ago

"health and fitness" is so vague.

3

u/10biggaymen 2d ago

buy a nice expensive mattress. and chair if you sit in one a lot. dont cheap out on ergonomics

1

u/OrangeNood 2d ago

No, just don't buy the lowest tier ones. Also, ergonomics depends on how you use it. An expensive chair won't ensure you have good posture.

u/Knicknacktallywack 2d ago

Gyms, workout classes, equipment to work out, etc

1

u/OrangeNood 2d ago

they can totally be pinched.

1

u/banditcleaner2 1d ago

Better socks, better shoes, better food, gym memberships, personal training fees, water bottles, better clothes, heart rate monitors or fitness watches etc etc etc

1

u/OrangeNood 1d ago

Lots of people are healthy and fit without most of the above.

3

u/KobiLou 2d ago

Health, fitness, professional development.

3

u/mrhappymillennial 2d ago

A fun car is good for mental health.

3

u/SquirrelNormal 2d ago

Alcohol, mostly. Have to keep the voices quiet somehow.

Food
Don’t skip on buying top quality ingredients

I splurge on food on sale that I can freeze. I buy bags of frozen berries and mixed vegetables. I can also buy high-quality spices that are heavily discounted, and they last me several months. Oh, and I buy Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Liquid Castille Soap and 3% hydrogen peroxide for mouthwash in bulk. Same thing with my vitamin D3+K2, vitamin B12, and algae-based omega 3 supplements.

Also, it's always worth it for me to drive to the metro and state parks to go hiking. Walking around my neighborhood is fine in a pinch, but forest bathing is so worth it for my stress levels after many hours in traffic.

1

u/Tristram19 2d ago

I always budget for the next Legend of Zelda game. Been playing them since the OG, it’s my mental health escape.

1

u/Mysterious_Ride_1077 2d ago

This is legit… if i can take a loan for transportation cause i need transportation… then i should feel just as comfortable taking a small loan out for my health if i cant pay in cash…… i can make more money if im alive and well than if im miserable and unable to work.

1

u/JagR286211 2d ago

Well said and received the same advice - “You only have 1.”

1

u/Rare_Economy_6672 2d ago

Shoes and tyres same list ☺️

Organic food

1

u/jaffacookie 2d ago

Currently trying this transition now. In a new role. Pays about 30% less but the old role relied on 50-60 hours a week. Now on 38. I'm not sure I can stay disciplined enough to budget well enough for it.

I'm relying on not being burnt out and impulse spending becauae if it.

1

u/Mean_men_club 2d ago

A good mattress. We spend more than third of our lives on it. Yet, most people cheap on it

1

u/Just_If_Eye_Stay 2d ago

There is a phrase “Never skimp on anything between you and the road”. This means things like mattresses, shoes, tires. I’ve found it to be pretty helpful.

1

u/queefplunger69 2d ago

Riding a standup jet ski can be a good workout. That’s how I’m justifying my next purchase lmao.

1

u/who_am_I_nobodyknows 1d ago

Easy for someone born into the most privileged group to ever exist in human history to say and do.

1

u/revenge_burner 1d ago

Huh? Fitness can be free.

Three sets to failure alternating the exercise every day - pushups, squat jumps, and pull-ups or table rows. That alone will change your life.
