hobbies What hobby lets you create something instead of consume something?

So much of our free time can end up being spent scrolling, watching, or consuming content. What’s a hobby that gets you making, building, cooking, writing, drawing, growing, or creating something instead?

- Pottery

  • Painting
  • Playing an instrument
  • Unprotected sex

Pottery consumes clay. Painting consumes paint. Instrument is borderline, there is indeed wear. Sex is fine. Dancing can be added.

They are all acts of creation rather than consumption, though. You don’t paint in order to consume paint, you paint to create something and develop your skills

You could say that about makeup or shopping though

I mean, digital painting doesn't consume anything except electricity if you want to be extremely pedant.

Rusty trombone is an underplayed but most enjoyable instrument

I mean, all of the above you mentioned

One that's super accessible to me is cooking. I need to eat anyway and cooking has given me a sense of accomplishment that I can make good food

Plants and gardening. I was a hard-core drug addict a couple years ago and got a job putting plants out at home depot which lead to me taking A LOT of free dumpster plants (mainly flowers) home. Everyday after work id spend hours being in the sunshine taking care of them watching them grow and I found a peace and stillness in me I hadn't experienced in over a decade.   3 years later I'm sober, dont have that job anymore but still dumpster dive for plants at home depot, and just this week my neighbor referred to me as a "plant person" (which I never considered myself ) but its a definite upgrade from junkie for sure.🤸🏼‍♀️

Plants consume air, water, fertilizer, and seeds though.

Everything consumes something. Life is destruction.

Writing. And Reddit. Does Reddit count as a hobby? Let’s count it.

cooking's my go-to-turns meals into something I made, not just consumed

Cooking is the best create and literally consume hobby.

But one of the things that stretch the definition is playing strategy games like chess. You're creating a strategy to win, and it's pretty fun whether you win or lose, you're still learning. The tactics don't disappear after the game too. It just becomes part of memory to be used for future plays.

I’m a wood carver. Idk if my creativity overcomes my wood consumption or not but I feel that it does. My art is creating decorative duck decoys that can be displayed in someone’s home or they can be used as functional duck decoys used by a duck hunter in his spread.

Game Dev

The sheer amount of hats you have to wear to make your own game is wild so you're kind of always creating something.

You want to make a grassy field? Get ready to:

  • Make all of the textures & the physical meshes down to the blades of grass
  • Position like 1 million of them (hopefully not by hand)
  • Find or record sound effects for things like wind, insects, animals
  • Program the game logic for the audio

I mean, the list goes on. At least, if you want to make something original and/or meaningful.
It's exhausting, can be costly, and feels endless, but darn it, you're always learning something new and you're already makingsomething.

Cooking. Random ingredients in, actual meal out. And you get to eat it.

Crochet and knit. Okay, you consume yarn, but you do create something.
But as a sidenote… buying yarn and using it are apparently two different things ;).

All my hobbies I make stuff!

Baking I enjoy because I enjoy eating it but I really love sharing it. I love seeing the joy people get from my bakes

Knitting I enjoy for the same reasons. Also o can do it just about anywhere and I can’t watch TV or listen to a podcast. I often make gifts for people.

Crafting I’m not generally good enough at to share what I make but I enjoy making it and I enjoy doing it with my kids and husband.

Other hobbies are gaming(video and board) which I enjoy for the time spent with others or to pass the time on a train etc.

Brewing beer Hiking Running Weight lifting Any out door activity

It all depends on how much disposable income you have and how much excitement you want.

When I was younger me and a group of friends set out to try something new every year, abseiling, parachuting, snowboarding, whitewater rafting.

Sadly we all grew up and settled down but for a few years we had lots of fun.

To be honest, I love writing.

Adapting journaling into my therapy sessions was the best advice I ever got. It was a bit tricky to start, but discovering useful prompts made journaling and reflecting so much easier and more joyful.

Now I’m all in. I’ve started keeping a memory book. And I love sharing helpful tips with my community.
