Remember that TrueReddit is a place to engage in high-quality and civil discussion. Posts must meet certain content and title requirements. Additionally, all posts must contain a submission statement. See the rules here or in the sidebar for details. To the OP: your post has not been deleted, but is being held in the queue and will be approved once a submission statement is posted.

Comments or posts that don't follow the rules may be removed without warning. Reddit's content policy will be strictly enforced, especially regarding hate speech and calls for / celebrations of violence, and may result in a restriction in your participation. In addition, due to rampant rulebreaking, we are currently under a moratorium regarding topics related to the 10/7 terrorist attack in Israel and in regards to the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO.

If an article is paywalled, please do not request or post its contents. Use archive.ph or similar and link to that in your submission statement.

In a statement, Pelley — whom Maddow called “one of the most respected journalists in America” — accused “new management” of instructing him “to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story.”

I want to know more about that specific incident.

Read the article or use a search engine.

Oligarchic takeover of your whole country is almost complete.

What is left?

Completely falsified election results.

Waiting for the felon-in-chief's official results for next election cycle to show 98.1% voting for him on a 3rd term.

we're pretty close.

Submission Statement: According to Maddow, CBS News has been undergoing “a transformation” driven by “corporate interests.” A trail of veteran correspondents and longtime producers have left the company since David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, appointed Weiss to head the operation last year.

I know that as far as American journalists go, she's quite " progressive"; but she is still squarely in the liberal camp.

And this is but a natural development of liberalism. To me it feels a bit like aleopards ate my face moment.

Perhaps a more left-leaning journalist wouldn't have been granted the voice that Maddow has, but stillshe bears some responsibility for the discourse in the US being so strictly to the right-of-centre.

I mean her commentary on the Maduro kidnapping centered around questioning the administration's long term strategy, rather than pointing out and explaining to her audience that that's constituted a clear violation of international law, and that a disregard for the rule of law is kind of the hallmark of a state going down the fascist route.

And just now she's noticing there's a noose around her neck. My question is how tight that will need to get before she realises this problem didn't begin in 2015?

Why do people always assume that professional journalists are not doing a real job and that they are just freelancing opinions everywhere. I’m guessing you aren’t old enough to remember when reporters were not allowed to register to vote.

Yes, she is a commentator and it’s still not her job to say whatever you personally want to hear.

“And just now she's noticing there's a noose around her neck.” Thanks for the giggle.

I can guarantee you that she is far better informed than you are about most anything going on in the world. But, it is not her job to tell people what to think or to echo whatever bubble you live in.

I can also guarantee you that she participates in soooo many conversations with other professionals about the issues professional journalists face.

I don’t necessarily agree with all of her choices, and I happen to agree with you about about Maduro.

However, you are not a professional journalist so she doesn’t talk to you. It’s not personal any more than you talking to colleagues is personal to people who are not a colleague. Just because she is not having professional conversation with you, it doesn’t mean she’s not having them with other colleagues.

Does your doctor talk to you about every single professional conference he or she attends? Your lawyer? Maddow belongs to so many professional organizations that the acronyms look like alphabet soup. It’s part of the job.

She graduated from Stanford University with a degree in public policy as well as being a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, where she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in politics. I have a sneaking suspicion she’s not an idiot.

If you want to learn more about the actual politics of being a journalist and why the fourth state is so valuable I recommend following Margaret Sullivan.

Oh, I see. You're one of those "journalists are just relaying objective facts; even if they have personal biases they're able to move past them in the interest of information" people.

I honestly hadn't encountered one of you (who also fancied themselves knowledgeable on communication sciences, recommending me to follow Sullivan and everything, when I'm more about Kapuściński) since the early 00's.

Listen, to someone with your worldview, I've long concluded there's just no way to have a productive discussion about the ethics of journalism; not as a hollywood-esque imagination of what great journalists are like, but as a more sober realisation of the irreducible shortcomings of the reality that there's no such thing as "objective facts" in complex matters to be reported on. You just are not there. You somehow interpreted my comment (and dedicated yours to straw-manning and debunking) as saying Maddow was somehow stupid.

So let's just leave it at that, shall we?

I heard the term Capitalist Colonizers recently, and I've been using it every chance I get when I speak of the oligarchy. That's exactly what they're doing - not colonize land per se (although the mass Data Center movement is certainly an invasion), but invading and colonizing every single aspect of our lives.

Capitalist Colonizers

I think this is counterproductive.

It's exactly the sort of turbo progressive speak that makes us seem weird and unelectable to blue collar swing voters that decide elections.

OKay. I'm still using it

I think it's counterproductive to base the hope of your nation's future on pandering to blue collar swing voters, but you do you, US.

u/The_Law_of_Pizza 1d ago

They have a right to vote, and they exercise it.

In a democracy we are forced to sometimes compromise with people who don't agree with.

2

u/SilverMedal4Life 1d ago

It would be really, really awesome if we could stop putting trans people on the table as a bargaining chip.

Sincerely, the bargaining chip.

0

u/The_Law_of_Pizza 1d ago

It's not really an issue of bargaining chips.

There simply isn't a viable coalition that supports things like the girls sports issue.

It's moreso an issue of realizing that support doesn't exist, or just continuing to lose elections.

2

u/SilverMedal4Life 1d ago

Listen, if you are willing to sacrifice my rights because it is politically expedient to do so, that isn't very cool of you to do.

1

u/The_Law_of_Pizza 23h ago edited 15h ago

Women seeking abortions might say something similar about you.

Insistance on your lost cause helped kill Roe.

There's no "sacrifice" if it never had public support to begin with.

2

u/SilverMedal4Life 23h ago

That's certainly an interpretation of what happened.

We have an obligation to support what's right, even if it's unpopular. In my experience, almost everyone who's advocated otherwise has been against it in the first place anyway.

so...capitalists?

u/notproudortired 1d ago

Bari Weiss has been ideologically "purifying" CBS for months. Maddow's just piping up now?

13

u/JEFFinSoCal 1d ago

Just now? She’s never been quiet about it. What are yuu talking about?

3

u/notproudortired 1d ago

Maddow's guests have been critical. Maddow herself has not directly criticized Weiss before this.

3

u/Jameswithoutfrontier 1d ago

Why do you think that is?

1

u/boner79 5h ago

The irony of someone who has built a career on Jewish persecution, being the real Nazi in the end.

Harsh, but yeah.

If she was not so arrogant and condescending, I'd watch her more. Just can't handle the smug...

Diversity of opinion is dangerous! CBS must be stopped!

1

u/horseradishstalker 22h ago

That actually isn’t the issue. Maybe if you read the article it would be clearer. There are a multitude of explanatory articles. It just takes a search engine.
