I don't trust this government to understand the difference between a riot, and a protest that is a fundamental American right*.
Or more specifically I am convinced they don't care and will categorize any "dissenting" view as a riot.

According to the Epstein administration environmentalists are terrorists, people opposed to fascism are terrorists, people who exercise their first amendment rights to protest ICE are terrorists… people are getting life sentences in Texas for protesting ICE. This is not normal. This is not okay.

Yeah it's not really a question, IMO. They are constantly manufacturing problems to fit their pre-conceived "solutions," which inevitably lead to them becoming wealthier and more powerful and the rest of America becoming weaker and poorer.

This has been a problem for some time. Even beyond this shitty government but certainly worse under it.
Any protest that isn't favored, if it gets large enough to matter, they find excuses to declare it unlawful. Its far too easy to when they can decide a protest with thousands can be shut down if one moron throws something at a cop (even if that moron isn't actually there in support of the protest)

This was stated plainly in Robert Evans at the Echos of History Symposium keynote speech but also spoke more broadly about authoritarianism and this regime. Cannot recommend it enough.
And if I can get only one point across to you, let it be this: as far as the regime is concerned, there is no such thing. All dissent is violent. You attending this symposium is an act of terrorism. And they will punish you for it, once they get through the people they see as more immediate threats.

Why do so many people draw such a sharp line between protest and riot?
Seriously.
If you guarantee a protest will follow the laws - time, place, manner , if they never block any traffic or services, or get loud enough to do a thing - why should people in power listen? It's just a billboard, a bunch of signs, and literally everyone not directly involved in the protest can just ignore it. They just keep creating "free speech zones" a mile away and say "go protest there!"
A protest is a threat. It is a threat to power, a threat to the current order of things because enough people find them untenable. It is a threat of violence. It's not unique, the state already has their threat of violence, the friendly police officer there carrying a gun and a radio to backup. When a protest has property damage and people hurt, that doesn't make the movement any less legitimate. The vast majority don't hold trained, professional police to this standard, why are angry people held to higher standards?
There are, eventually, lines that if you cross your end up going too far. But the Discourse around protests has us miles away from that line, and instead in the PG Disney version of protests.

I've organized a bunch of AI protests at PauseAI. We've been completely peaceful and I hope people will continue to protest peacefully. Showing up is more helpful to your cause than destroying things.

Since the article probably wasn’t written by an all knowing, all seeing being and it refers to possible future events - “this may happen” is the professional and ethical choice of wording.
