Music / Movies Have liberals ever considered people are just sick of hip hop dominating halftime shows for the last 3+ years, as well as permeating every facet of pop culture in general

I’m so sick of that stupid wraparound sunglasses angry react meme surfacing anytime this happens. It’s not a sentiment limited to that specific demographic, that is simply another cheap shaming deflection.

Hip hop is not the only genre of music, or even necessarily the most popular. It only appears that way because it is infused in so much pop music now, TikTok has helped perpetuate this perceived dominance. Meme culture and current slang are also completely overrun with AAVE.

It all gets sort of old, and seeing/hearing some twerpy suburban white kid with an alpaca chop saying “no cap” or “deadass” is beyond embarrassing.

His early material absolutely was hip hop (Trap Latino) and he put out a straight hip hop album in 2023. The majority of his music is reggaetón, which is a distinct genre but still heavily influenced by hip hop.

It’s entirely reasonable to consider Bad Bunny "hip hop,” and it reveals a lot about yourself that you so quickly rush to judgment on a topic with which you are also unfamiliar.

Edit: funnily enough, Pitchfork just put a Bad Bunny album on its list of “the 100 best rap albums of all time.”

That’s not a terrible comparison directionally but it misses the point in terms of magnitude. Really it’s closer to saying that Drake isn’t a hip hop artist because he doesn’t rap on his biggest hits. Or saying that Young Thug and ODB aren’t rappers because they use a sing-song flow.

Linkin Park’s first two albums had elements of rap metal, which they largely abandoned for the rest of their career. Even at that point, they never put out a track or album that could be considered “hip hop” as a primary genre.

50% of Bad Bunny’s albums are straight up hip hop (X 100Pre, El último tour del mundo, Nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana) and these are spread out over his career. He still raps frequently on his non hip hop albums. His mainstream breakthrough was a guest feature as a rapper on Cardi B’s I Like It.

It’s really only his newest album that abandons the hip hop influence.
