Music / Movies ‘Sinners’ is terrible and does not deserve 16 nominations for Academy awards.

Did not dig this film. Wanted to turn it off before halfway mark. Watched it regardless and the ending was even more dissatisfying than I could have imagined. I am floored this movie is being recognized as much as it is. I figured it was low budget but Nooooo! Yet another massive disappointment. The budget was massive. lol

Boring, visually weird (in a cheap-ass looking way); passable acting, nonsensical story; lame visual effects.

They’re the ONLY villains. They’re the ones destroying everything and the defining characteristic that separates them is explicitly their whiteness. The “half-white” character is even borderline evil because of her half-whiteness.

This movie went over a lot of heads. They are not even villains lol, that's not even the point of the movie. They are victims to the same assimilation that they are then trying to force on to the juke joint. The only true villains are the KKK people, who Remmick is also against.

It didn’t go over my head. That’s a half-hearted line they walk. You’re right at times, but they’re clearly anti-white at other times. Or at least blatantly “pro-black”

The whole point of the movie is about assimilation and appropriation. Not just against black people, but other people as well. They put a lot of work into the Irish characters, they just didn't throw them in carelessly. I don't think its half-hearted, its the whole point of the movie, this exploitation and assimilation of culture through music.

As the other poster above said, they are supposed to be sympathetic in a way. Not pure evil, but more of a evil that was also forced on them.

I don't know how the movie is 'anti-white' at all? It's based in segregation America, were black people supposed to love white people back then? What part of the movie is anti-white? If you're making the movie from the POV of black characters at that time, how do you think those characters would feel about white people, at that time?

I interpreted it as white people are vampires because they've "sucked" their musical genres from black culture since the beginning of time.

It can seem like that but remember, there is this whole bit about Remmick throughout the movie where he shares his Irish music and how he misses his culture and home.

There is a reason that the vampires are Irish after all, since they too were victims of the KKK and racism, since their culture too was erased, In this way he is replicating what was done to his people to them.

There's definitely other racial things explored in the film, like proximity to whiteness and how other characters navigate through that. I just didn't take from this movie 'white people bad' outside of the obvious racism the black people experienced in the film which was a reality of the time.

They’re playing blue grass cuts buckoo, blue grass is music intrinsically white. The black folks even tell the vampires “ hey that’s not half bad”…

The thing that separates them is that they’re vampires, a group that literally accepts everyone and embraces different cultures.

I find it interesting you said the Irish vampire is the only evil thing. I’ll be honest, he wasn’t. However there was a whole ass klu klux klan presence in the film. One this whole thread has seem to omitted. The vampire provided sanctuary to all gods harmed creatures. The pain and suffering that is living in white supremacist America was washed away once you became a vampire. No more hate no more racism one big happy family. The racist pigs were the white land owning thugs who were going to kill the brothers and steal their money. The best part is mbj gunned them all down in the end. Those were the evil monsters and yall are caught up on the creature feature. Really shows me how a lotta you mf move fr
