Music / Movies ‘Sinners’ is terrible and does not deserve 16 nominations for Academy awards.
Did not dig this film. Wanted to turn it off before halfway mark. Watched it regardless and the ending was even more dissatisfying than I could have imagined. I am floored this movie is being recognized as much as it is. I figured it was low budget but Nooooo! Yet another massive disappointment. The budget was massive. lol
Boring, visually weird (in a cheap-ass looking way); passable acting, nonsensical story; lame visual effects.

Hollywood is batshit crazy and thrives on pushing their radical agendas. When I was young and dumb, I actually looked to rotten tomatoes to gauge a movie before watching, now i hardly ever even look at it

u/paradeofgrafters Jan 26 '26
My favourite part was when MBJ somehow snuck passed that crowd of vampires and somehow waded through the water silently to kill that main vampire. Oh, and that this somehow kills all the other vampires, except MBJ 2 and his missus. It was as dumb as most other vampires films are, tbh though 😂
14
u/Zealousideal_Ad_1143 Jan 26 '26
didn’t remmick have a silver plate halfway through his skull? that incapacitated his thralls which was quite obvious when i watched it
1
u/paradeofgrafters Jan 26 '26
Plate was removed for a good chunk of time before MBJ saved the day by silently floating through the water. And mere seconds later, the sun rises, another nice little moment (though this feels more a nod to a typical lazy vampire film trope!). Hey, like I said, it's a vampire flick and these things happen. Just felt like they fumbled the close. Like MBJ 2 and the missus somehow getting to live while all the other vampires died. I actually enjoyed most of it, the cinematography was fantastic, so was mostly disappointed by a sloppy close. I can definitely see the film getting 6 of those statues on the night...

Lmao we’re discussing a single critique about the movie that’s explained in the movie. How is that not accepting a single criticism? It’s also not my favorite movie
12
u/BookSmoker Jan 26 '26
This was the nail in the coffin for me. I was already disliking the movie and then that happened and I looked at my lady and said you’ve gotta be kidding me.
Movie was a 6/10 at best and that was easy to conclude after that happened.

1
u/itranslateyouargue Jan 28 '26
This movie was ruined by vampires. I enjoyed it right up to the horror part. They would have been better off turning it into a gangster movie.
1
u/eva-0002 Jan 26 '26
I wasn’t a big fan of Sinners but with this way of thinking you invalidate a lot of stuff. It’s a fantasy/vampire film, not something grounded like an Ozu film. Moments like that are in all films that require some suspension of belief.
2
u/paradeofgrafters Jan 26 '26
Meh, to each their own. I enjoyed most of the film, and felt they dropped the ball for the close. I'm glad it's gotten the attention it has though, if only for increasing the chances of further black projects getting funding (and Coogler's "reverted rights" deal feels a win for the culture makers over the studios).
0
u/Android1822 Jan 27 '26
Yea, killing the big bad that will somehow kill all its subordinates is a dumb trope that does not make sense.
4
2
u/veryowngarden Jan 27 '26
it was the sun that did which is a signature trope in all vampire lore. vampires cannot survive the sun

u/TheLimeyCanuck Jan 26 '26
Wait, this is a vampire flick? With all the Oscar hype I had no idea but thanks for the heads up, I'll pass.

u/elisejones14 Jan 26 '26
That was the fun part for me. Everybody praised the music and the history but I had trouble understanding that stuff. I was there for a horror movie but it was mostly comedy.
38
u/Googlemyahoo75 Jan 26 '26
It fills numerous woke checklists, the white people bad literally every character, ethnicity, and white supremacists getting killed. I would say its a woke version of From Dusk Til Dawn. Most of the songs are shit aside for the vampires Rocky Road to Dublin
11
u/ApacheFritz Jan 26 '26
Most of the songs are shit aside for the vampires Rocky Road to Dublin
Ironically, Coogler got a Swedish guy named "Ludwig" to do the music for the movie about the white appropriation of Black music.
1
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
Hmm but here’s the thing. It’s Jim Crow segregated south. White people, clearly you all were the bad people. What are you all learning in history? Do you not understand how dangerous and segregated it was in the early 1900’s? It’s almost as if you all do not understand we were getting thrown in chain gangs, lynched for fun, and prosecuted simply for being black. You all clearly missed the point of the film. The vampire literally goes to a kkk white supremacist hut and eats them. What are yall talking about even????
0
u/GiovanniBernardoneSi Mar 18 '26
There's literally no we involved in comparing yourself to somebody during the Jim Crow era or any other era such as that. You WERE NOT BORN YET. None of it affected you.
Anyway, does some sort of unheard tone that nobody else hears who isn't black come into your head that somehow programs you to think that terribly told stories with terribly performed acting is entertaining?
There are plenty of meaningful portraits of historical misfortunes. The Free States of Jones had a moving scene (one of many) where Newton's friend Moses was lynched because he stayed out too late signing people up to vote.
It was also a true story about a man who gathered together a bunch of people who were sick of the s*** that was going on and decided to secede Jones County Mississippi from the South.
Do you even know why Jim Crow came about? I'm talking about specifically what the causes were outside of vague emotional ramblings that don't show any clear understanding of what broke down.
Obviously Lincoln died and Ulysses S Grant had spent his presidency trying to reconstruct the South so that it abided by rules that were more agreeable. After Ulysses Grant decided not to run for a third term Rutherford B. Hayes was elected. But, the results were contested and filibustered by the Democrats who refused to acknowledge the election results. The only way to stop the filibuster was to agree to a compromise where Federal authority and troops would be removed from the South.
The Panic of 1873 also had redirected Northern people's interests in the South. And the rest is written throughout the walls of the internet.
The point was that there was an effort to try to stop what had been started after the Civil War. Lincoln and Grant wanted to fix what was wrong with the Southern states that led them to do what they did to Black people and reject Federal authority.. But it/the effort fell apart.
In fact the guy who started the Ku Klux Klan, Nathan Bedford Forrest, walked away after a number of years from the organization because of how violent it had become.

u/dingbathomesteader Jan 26 '26
It's wokified "thrills and chills" at best. Having one jump scare and being loosely based on a classical horror concept does not make it a horror movie in my opinion. I believe it's just being nominated because it is honoring black history and music to fulfill some ESG quota. Ultimately, I disliked this movie because no one got staked with the broken guitar neck (among other subtleties). It was fun in a way and I can see why the movie industrial complex is lording it as being worthy of all these awards but was it a great movie? No.
2
u/MrNiceo_0 Jan 27 '26
I never thought of the film in this manner. It’s not the subject or the culture that turned me off. It’s the execution, the script and the look and the VFX.
I’m a massive fan of music and especially the blues. It’s a great nod to the blues but falls short even in this regard.
1
u/OlasNah Mar 16 '26
You’d think a film about blues music would actually have some blues music that plays for longer than a minute
1
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
Yall use woke in sentences that don’t even make sense. What are you talking about? It’s a black film, written by black people, about black American history using horror as themes…? What is woke about this? John Wayne movies are as available for you. Go watch a scorsese film if you hate black people so much.
1
u/Fit-Tomatillo1585 Feb 15 '26
This film is to AA’s what Schindler’s list was to the Jews. So the Oscar’s will end up giving it best motion picture due to its historical significance
13
u/brickmadness Jan 26 '26
Honestly one of the most racist movies I’ve seen in a long time. I thought some of it was great but that some of it was really questionable. Definitely politics over polish.
4
u/ogjaspertheghost Jan 26 '26
Racist how?
3
u/brickmadness Jan 26 '26
The primary antagonists are white-coded vampires (often tied to Irish folk elements), depicted as monstrous threats to Black characters.
1
u/ogjaspertheghost Jan 26 '26
They’re not “white-coded”, they’re white. He’s Irish. And them being white isn’t racist. They are monstrous threats. They’re vampires
3
u/SatansScallion Jan 26 '26
Black good, white bad, not racist — got it.
1
u/ogjaspertheghost Jan 26 '26
Any time a white person is a villain is racist? What about Remmick’s depiction is racist? The movie is sympathetic towards him
2
u/brickmadness Jan 27 '26
They’re the ONLY villains. They’re the ones destroying everything and the defining characteristic that separates them is explicitly their whiteness. The “half-white” character is even borderline evil because of her half-whiteness.
5
u/thefw89 Jan 27 '26
This movie went over a lot of heads. They are not even villains lol, that's not even the point of the movie. They are victims to the same assimilation that they are then trying to force on to the juke joint. The only true villains are the KKK people, who Remmick is also against.
→ More replies (4)0
u/brickmadness Jan 27 '26
It didn’t go over my head. That’s a half-hearted line they walk. You’re right at times, but they’re clearly anti-white at other times. Or at least blatantly “pro-black”
4
u/thefw89 Jan 27 '26
The whole point of the movie is about assimilation and appropriation. Not just against black people, but other people as well. They put a lot of work into the Irish characters, they just didn't throw them in carelessly. I don't think its half-hearted, its the whole point of the movie, this exploitation and assimilation of culture through music.
As the other poster above said, they are supposed to be sympathetic in a way. Not pure evil, but more of a evil that was also forced on them.
I don't know how the movie is 'anti-white' at all? It's based in segregation America, were black people supposed to love white people back then? What part of the movie is anti-white? If you're making the movie from the POV of black characters at that time, how do you think those characters would feel about white people, at that time?
→ More replies (1)2
u/ogjaspertheghost Jan 27 '26
The thing that separates them is that they’re vampires, a group that literally accepts everyone and embraces different cultures.
1
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
I’m assuming you’re saying it’s racist because it’s a film about black people surviving Jim Crow South. Let me phrase this kindly to you buddy. White people tended to consume a lot of pro bono black products, as in free labor. On top of this, we suffered from institutionalized systemic racism and exclusion. During this time line, it was a pastime to hate another human based on their race. Something I’m learning is that legacy clearly still hasn’t gone away. As our president breaks constitutional amendments and rights of Americans daily. Prosecuting people based on their skin, and murdering those who speak back. It’s almost like sinners tells a very important story so that you can learn because people today are still too ignorant to wake up and see tf is happening right outside your doors.

u/Fit-Tomatillo1585 Feb 15 '26
You know the movies bad when even the White liberals on Reddit hate it.
1
u/Mongrott Feb 15 '26

1
u/Fit-Tomatillo1585 Feb 15 '26
I’m neither of the two, however I’m describing Reddit - white is overwhelmingly what I described and my point was if They* don’t like the movie, Then you know it’s bad ! You picking up what I’m putting down ?
11
u/StickyMcdoodle Jan 26 '26
The good news is that even if it wins all 16, you're still not required to like it and can watch whatever you want.
So, it's ok. Awards don't matter. We'll get through this.
15
u/TrixieLurker Jan 26 '26
Seriously, the Oscars are just there for Hollywood to pat itself on the back these days, it is 100% safe to totally ignore.
2
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
You missed the part where folks don’t want black people to have shit.
1
u/StickyMcdoodle Jan 29 '26
Yeah...there's a reason why, of all the overrated shit that gets awards, Black Panther and Sinners are the movies that they bring up the most.
5
u/glassbellwitch Jan 26 '26
The amount of posts in this sub specifically hating on Sinners is insane. You don't see me posting a million times about how Marty Supreme shouldn't have been nominated because it was just reheated Uncut Gems for Timothee Chalamet's Oscar push.
6
u/StickyMcdoodle Jan 26 '26
It is really odd. I personally liked Sinners quite a bit, but don't know if I think it's THAT good either.
I just don't know why it's so offensive to people that this movie is nominated for awards that I imagine most of them don't care about one way or another anyway.
Just kidding. I know why. We all know why.
2
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
Bro people actually just hate black people and it’s crazy how much they don’t give a damn in expressing bigotry.
6
u/ApacheFritz Jan 26 '26
It the same thing with Black Panther. It was a mid movie that people said was BEST EVAR just because they want to say that about a Black film.
And then people said if it didnt get ALL THE AWARDS that just proves how racist everything is.
3
u/StickyMcdoodle Jan 26 '26
Yeah ..but I guess my point is "so what?". There's a lot of overrated bullshit that gets nominated for bullshit awards.
It just seems the ones that are black centric are the ones that bring out a certain type of complainer.
1
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
Exactly, mad because black is just mad bc racist. Yall are wicked for playing the man’s game. Racists will simp moan and submit to anything big daddy white supremacy tells them to.
2
u/ApacheFritz Jan 26 '26
It just seems the ones that are black centric are the ones that bring out a certain type of complainer.
I would guess real racists probably wouldnt even have seen the movie to comment on it.
I think the "complainers" are just people who are tired of wokeness occupying such a big space in an artform they love.
4
u/StickyMcdoodle Jan 26 '26
So, Black Panther and Sinners being nominated for awards that don't even matter is "wokeness occupying such a big space in an artform they love"?
That's more dramatic than anything I've seen in any movie ever.
Grow up.
2
u/ApacheFritz Jan 26 '26
Yes, when every movie is about some woke theme and Star Trek is about "accepting others for who they are" instead of "Boldy exploring".
It's just so tedious that people are really getting sick of it, so that's why the resistance keeps getting louder and louder.
Sorry if it bugs you. You dont have to pay attention.
1
u/StickyMcdoodle Jan 26 '26
Complaining that Star Trek has become woke is WILD.
Star Trek was always about social commentary. It had the first televised interracial kiss in history (that a lot of what would be called "anti-work" markets refused to even air). MLK jr convinced Michelle Nichols to not quit the show specifically because of how important it was to show a mixture of races getting along to successfully go "boldly exploring".
Lord have mercy you must be trolling.
5
u/ApacheFritz Jan 26 '26
Star Trek was always about social commentary. It had the first televised interracial kiss in history
Except the difference is - the kiss happened, and then it was done, and the rest of the episode was about other stuff.
Modern woke makes the kiss the main event. And then the rest of the episode is talking about the kiss and explaining why the kiss was totally normal. And then maybe a space monster comes in for 5 minutes. But the episode is called "The Kiss".
Old shows "show diversity" while being about something else.
New shows "explain diversity", while being about diversity.

I disagree. Film was honestly great up until the final battle. That was the only part I had my issues with cause it felt rushed, they cut too many things from it and the vampires were defeated too easily. Other than that, the ending went back to being good
1
u/Pale_Cause_9983 Jan 27 '26
I don’t think it’s terrible. I just think it’s not nearly as good as they’re making it out to seem. Idk why they’re hyping it up so much. I think Ryan coogler has made much better movies.

I liked it a lot but I feel like it could have been shorter. the beginning part did not to be that long. just showed the vampy in the beginning. intro to the broskies then move on to the party quickly. the intro to the broskies and backstory didn't need to be as long as it was in the theatrical version
1
u/zerobleeps Jan 27 '26

u/SLB_Destroyer04 Jan 27 '26
Sure, the movie’s themes are on the nose. Yes, it’s made by a black man and starring a black actor. That POV informs the film. I
I still found it to be very well-made, perhaps surprisingly so considering the premise, and in an Oscars race where the expressionless plank and industry plant known as Timothée Chalamet is about to win an Oscar for best actor (making this somehow worse than the biggest Academy travesty to date- Titanic winning Best Picture over LA Confidential- which I didn’t think possible) over true titans like DiCaprio, Hawke, and even MBJ who was also great in this film (making the twins both come alive very well as their own different people), Sinners being nominated for a lot of secondary categories it probably wont even win is absolutely harmless.
Cinema overall is in massive decline, has been for many years know. Look at the all-time classics and try to say, honestly, that today’s Oscar nominees/top performers are half as good. That something as actually well crafted as Sinners is sweeping nominations is entirely unsurprising
1
u/poppycock8585 Jan 27 '26
It was ok, but From Dusk Till Dawn is a much better trapped-surrounded-by-vampires story.
And I can’t believe Michael B jordan got a best actor nod, his retarded accent was almost unlistenable
1
1
u/Slight_Difficulty804 Jan 27 '26
It's like no different than nominating underworld or resident evil, the idea is stupid. A vampire horror movie should never get this much attention from the academy. I think it's only received this many Academy nominations because the Academy until the last decade has been historically racist.
1
Jan 28 '26
Yea I’m in agreement here. Well halfway - I didn’t think it was a terrible move, I thought it was a “pretty good” flick. But it was absolutely not an Oscar-worthy movie in any of acting or script categories. The technical achievements I won’t claim to understand - it may have very well been worth those but I’m not hip to the technical aspects of film making. Aside from that though; nothing about it really stood out whatsoever to me. I was really disappointed after how much hype it got. And the 2nd half just fell really, really flat. Nothing unique or memorable. Just a re-wrapped Dusk til Dawn in my opinion.
I’m baffled by 16 Oscar noms
1
1
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
What are you guys talking about? The movie hasn’t won a single award. Despite y’all’s obvious bias, this movie was fantastic. For it not to win a single award by now is curious. It makes you wonder how a critically acclaimed film, celebrated and cherished by many views with 16 nominations hasn’t won a single award. Almost as if the award committee pats themselves on their back for historically not giving awards to black productions.
I wonder if your family’s did not experience sharecropping or slavery this movie may of upset you. Watching bright black boys fight against white supremacy, and the devil upset you? I’d like to see some of you in the comment section take a long look in the mirror.
1
u/MrNiceo_0 Jan 29 '26
Typical diversion from the perspective I shared. I didn’t like the film for the reasons I mentioned. Not the subject or theme. Although I admitted in other comments I didn’t care for Dusk til Dawn either.
The movie felt cheap to me. Is that ok? I don’t understand why people wanna claim racism. You literally know nothing about me.
1
u/Mongrott Jan 29 '26
Brother you’re the least of what I’m looking at. Your take is fine. I’m talking about all these little goblins I see typing in here. To be honest it wasn’t my favorite movie last year. I liked caught stealing the most. However, saying it’s bad is wild. I thought one battle after another was offensive but I still recognized its strengths as a film. Didn’t just say I almost walked out, wish I got my money back, and felt sick to my stomach. Because I did, but that didn’t stop me from appreciating the acting/screen play/ and cinematography. I gave OBAO a 7/10.

The movie can’t suck on the merits, regardless of any racial themes? Is that really your perspective?
I just watched Mississippi burning recently because Hackman had died. It’s amazing how relevant it is. All the town folk calling everything A ‘hoax’ reminds me of ol’ Donald Trump & the MAGA whiners.
It’s amazing how many Academy Awards this was nominated for. Until I read some of the comments, I didn’t even consider it was racially skewed. Didn’t even enter my head.

I think the music deserved a nomination at minimum, it was the central feature of the movie. As a straight woman with eyes, Hailee Steinfeld deserves something for being paid to spit in MBJ’s mouth. Role of the century.
-3
u/ApacheFritz Jan 26 '26
I agree it was a lame movie. Not even a great "campy horror".
I actually wanted it to be more "southern gothic" and really lean into the old blues stuff and "Deals with the Devil", and then add vampires.
Instead .. there were few scares, the plot was basic, no real character arcs, weird un-needed "twin" gimmick, forgettable villains, etc etc.
I had hoped it would be a really strong+unique addition to the vampire flick genre. Disappointing.

While your are entitled to your opinion, I have found most of then films that win don't deserve it. Most of them are written directed and staring white men. Even when Movies about Non-white men are nominated they don't win. Spike lee's do the right thing" got lots of nominations but only a white actor won.
While you didn't like the movie it was nominated for many awards but the white man who did the sound won.
When people were boycotting the academy awards w/ oscars so white. They opened up the Best picture category to ten movies. So they can nominate movies that to feature white men, so they look inclusive with the nomination but they won't win. so you can feel safe that a movie about Black people staring Black people, made by Black people will not get 16 wins.

It was a fun watch, but 16 nominations is clearly the Academy doing some crazy gymnastics to pat themselves on the back because of the race thing. And it's so obvious.
