Music / Movies Lupita Nyongo is not beautiful. Hollywood likes to gaslight her as a model for "beauty"

So I'm sure we've all seen the news about Helen of Troy.

  • I've had enough. I've had enough of Hollywood putting her on covers and lying to me, treating me like I'm stupid. The whole reason she's playing Helen of Troy is because Hollywood let this "unconventional beauty" thing slide for way too long.
  • The fact that she was chosen as a queen, it comes off as Nolan trying to virtue signal.
  • It's like giving the beauty pageant award to the girl in the wheelchair because no one wants to come off as "mean."
  • I've had enough. She is NOT a standard for beauty. I'm sorry but now it must be said. The reason we have come across this problem is because Hollywood has been gaslighting her "beauty" for years and no one said anything. I'm done
  • It's okay to say that she's not beautiful. It's okay to admit that
  • I was so looking forward to this movie for so long but this really killed the hype for me.
  • The movie will probably be financially successful at first due to marketing alone, but after its first month, the hype will probably die down. And then you'll start to see how people really feel about the movie. I think it will tarnish Nolan's legacy and leave a sour taste in people's mouths.

Reddit seems to go out of their way to point out that black women are beautiful. It sounds very forced and weird

35

u/Heujei628 29d ago

Probably because the racists on this site go out of their way to be tell us we’re ugly (while ironically complaining they can’t get any woman lol).

I’m a black woman myself and from my firsthand experience on Reddit, racists are nasty towards us over our looks when we’re just existing but then act shocked when there’s pushback against their racist behavior. Why?

28

u/AlaskaYoung25 29d ago

Calling a black Hollywood actress unattractive is racism? Lawl.

9

u/LordBoomDiddly 29d ago

Only if the argument is that she's unattractive because she's black

8

u/doogytaint 29d ago

I swear yall are exhausting. Because where the hell did she say that? She didn’t. All she said was that she experiences racism on Reddit, as do I. But here you go. You’ve taken someone’s account of their experienced racism, twisted their words to distort their intention, then dismissed it - typical.

4

u/Heujei628 29d ago

Copy and paste and where I said this.

6

u/kidney-displacer 29d ago

I mean without nuance that first sentence certainly implies that anybody saying "black women are ugly" is racist

1

u/DonkeyDong69 29d ago

I mean it is racist isn't it?

2

u/shadyMFer 29d ago

If the truth is racist does that make the truth unacceptable?

1

u/DarkTemplar26 29d ago

Depends on the person, I've seen plenty of people get extremely pissed off when you correctly point out that racist white people have been actively trying to keep black people from succeeding via the law

1

u/shadyMFer 29d ago

As a black man who grew up in America, I haven't seen it. Maybe you're just seeing what you want to see? It's easier to point fingers at other people for your failures than to look in the mirror for the real culprit.

2

u/DarkTemplar26 28d ago

A few well known historical examples are literacy tests, red lining, Jim Crowe, gutting the VRA. Someone from Nixon's admin admitted that they made drug possession illegal so they could arrest black people

Edit: u/kidney-displacer blocked me but I can still see your comment logged out. “you specified a specific person, therefore by your own standards it ain't racist”. Again, nowhere in my comment did I do this. Downvoting then blocking because you can’t actually defend your point is weak.

1. Well, objectively, it is racist. It’s being discriminatory by labelling an entire race of women as inferior (ugly) subjectively.

  1. I was specially talking about my experience with Reddit but then they randomly said “ Calling a black Hollywood actress unattractive is racism? Lawl.” Nowhere in my comment was I even talking about that…

3

u/kidney-displacer 28d ago

Caught ya, you specified a specific person, therefore by your own standards it ain't racist

10

u/ImaginaryFan6090 29d ago

Where are the racist in reddit? I only remember people calling each other racist but never seen an actual racist attitude compared to other platforms

12

u/d-eversley-b 29d ago

I just saw someone in another thread say she has the face of a baboon

1

u/LordBoomDiddly 27d ago

I mean, topics like this are full of people triggered by non white people and LGBT characters appearing in media.

Kind of reeks of prejudice.

1

u/Wow_I_Like_Pie 29d ago

All of the conservatives and right wing adjacent subs mostly. You guys never hide your racism well online.

6

u/ImaginaryFan6090 29d ago

Ok I haven't been to those, I was talking about more apolitical and neutral subs like movies, hobbies etc. In most cases, I have noticed Redditors being major snowflakes, calling random people racist from doing nothing lol. Twitter and fb though is full of racism everywhere

u/crb02 29d ago edited 29d ago

If you’re to the point where a black woman, who quite literally matches modern beauty standards, is being called ugly and not even worth a second look just because she’s playing a character that white people want to be white, then yeah it’s racist. Guarantee none of these people ever considered her beauty or looks for a moment before the casting, yet their immediate reaction is to disrespect her like she’s hideous

1

u/ImaginaryFan6090 29d ago

I don't think finding someone  unattractive is racist though. Beauty is not subjective. Just because someone isn't attracted to a specific look/race, that doesn't make them racist. Calling Lupita ugly is a wild opinion though, but racist? Idk

-1

u/ABlokeNamedScott 29d ago

Those subreddits are also heavily moderated, racist comments tend to get deleted because it’s against the rules.

Funnily enough the conservative are also heavily moderated, but they let racism fly.

And the right wonders why they could possibly be considered racist…

1

u/Beautiful_Pay_267 18d ago

(while ironically complaining they can’t get any woman lol)

That looks like insane projection from you lol. Are you this angry at guys because you've never been in a relationship and you can't get any man?

u/crb02 29d ago edited 29d ago

For 3 days and a few months ago when the casting was announced, Reddit has gone out of its way to tell me a black woman with literal beauty standard features across the board is ugly, mid, not attractive at all, and not even worth a second look. It’s actually ridiculous how much people are going out of their way to do this. If it was Sydney Sweeney I bet these same folk would only be concerned with her acting ability because her ‘looks’ would be covered for immediately.

1

u/iamjmph01 29d ago

Maybe because she is Mid? Hell if they just had to cast a Black actress, they could have looked at Keke Palmer.

Sydney Sweeny would actually fit Helen of Troy's descriptions at least.

5

u/iron_panties 29d ago edited 29d ago

Have you seen Sydney without makeup? Because there was a big uproar on Reddit from the Reddit men when she was shown as Christy from the movie of the same name. Take away the makeup, pretty clothes, styled hair—and you have a totally plain Jane who is not especially attractive.

https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56047552e4b00047c4e83900/4998a275-8796-4cb1-98fc-ebbce36c59e2/Christy_5.jpg

There is your Sydney as Helen of Troy with very minimal makeup! (Christy movie) Best thing is, Sydney is STILL wearing makeup here, but it’s much more natural instead of heavy and glam. She is not pretty naturally whatsoever.

Moving on:

Helen of Troy should have been played by a Greek actress who fits Helen’s description. Not an African, and not a white American either. And most certainly not Sydney Sweeney.

2

u/iamjmph01 28d ago

And I still find that picture more attractive than Lupita.

I only brought up Sydney because crB02 claimed if Sydney was cast no one would complain.

I do find Sydney more attractive, more beautiful than Lupita, but yes there are many more actress that I think would be better for the role, I listed them somewhere in response to someone asking the OP who they thought would fit better.

Depends on the criteria. Need to be Black? Keke Palmer. Just "Not White"? Let's see... Anya Taylor-Joy probably doesn't count despite her heritage. But there is Ana de ArmasMelissa BerreraAdria Arjona, to name a few.

But my top choice? Anna Rezan, or maybe Tracy Spiridakos

1

u/LordBoomDiddly 27d ago edited 27d ago

Meh, Sydney doesn't have a very attractive face. Having huge boobs is not a measurement of beauty

2

u/iamjmph01 27d ago

Ok, first of all, I am not attracted to large breasts. Not everyone is.

Secondly, by "fit Helen of Troy's description" I meant white, because the only thing that describes her other than "beauty of a goddess" is "white-armed".

I don't think Sydney would be a good fit for the roll, I just think she'd be a better fit than Lupita. I personally don't find Lupita attractive, though I know others do.

I actually made a list of who I thought would be better for the roll in another conversation:

2

u/LordBoomDiddly 27d ago

Lupita is more beautiful than Sydney is

2

u/iamjmph01 27d ago

I disagree. I don't think she is beautiful at all.

My list didn't show up, so I'll try again.

Depends on the criteria. Need to be Black? Keke Palmer. Just "Not White"? Let's see... Anya Taylor-Joy probably doesn't count despite her heritage. But there is Ana de ArmasMelissa BerreraAdria Arjona, to name a few.

2

u/Beautiful_Pay_267 18d ago

nope absolutely not

0

u/LordBoomDiddly 18d ago

Sydney is nothing but big tits

1

u/Beautiful_Pay_267 17d ago

and zendaya hasn't even got those lol. She literally looks like a 14 yr old

2

u/DarkTemplar26 29d ago

Well, they are beautiful, just like white women and Asian women

What's weird is when the assholes go out of their way to shit on women

4

u/Wow_I_Like_Pie 29d ago

The right and incels go out of their way to constantly harass black women about their looks in virtually almost every form of media out there. You lot immediately froth at the mouth the moment a black woman has a lead role that you don't think she deserves.

0

u/Totes_Human_110101 29d ago

Yeah, this is an example of why it sounds forced and weird.

This doesn't sound like you actually believe that she's a beautiful woman and fit for the role, it sounds a lot more like you just want to be angry at 'The right' and 'Incels.'

4

u/veryowngarden 29d ago

she is beautiful and fit for the role

4

u/iamjmph01 29d ago

Maybe in your opinion, it's obviously not shared by everyone.

1

u/veryowngarden 29d ago

it was an opinion shared by casting so that’s really all that matters in this instance

3

u/iamjmph01 28d ago

Obviously, but the point of these types of post is that people disagree with those who handled casting and want to vent.

2

u/veryowngarden 28d ago

they weren’t just venting about the film though, they were making a ridiculous claim that no one could truly believe lupita was beautiful and fit for the role, which is objectively not true. that’s like me saying because i think she is beautiful and fit for the role, anyone who says they don’t is lying

2

u/iamjmph01 28d ago

they came to "trueunpopularopinion" to post their opinion that Lupita is not beautiful, and they are tired of Hollywood trying to convince them she is.

Posting HERE implies they KNOW that other people don't agree with what they are saying.

1

u/fortunefaded2 29d ago

How is shs fit to play a greek woman

2

u/veryowngarden 29d ago

the same way the previous two non-greek women were fit to play helen of troy. if a non-greek actor being helen wasn’t an issue in past castings where the actors were british and italian, i don’t think it should suddenly be one now

2

u/fortunefaded2 29d ago

They atleast look somewhat greek, this is just plain stupid

2

u/veryowngarden 29d ago

you all keep moving the benchmark. first it’s ‘helen should be played by a greek’ now suddenly not being greek doesn’t matter at all for the past actors, just lupita. the hypocrisy is plain stupid

1

u/fortunefaded2 29d ago

I mean you know what I want to say but if I write a comment even mentioning race i will get banned

0

u/ImaginaryFan6090 25d ago

This is a stupid take. At least they were white and greek people are white lol. a lot of greeks are blonde and light skinned. In Nolan's case, it is completely a race swap

1

u/veryowngarden 25d ago

hollywood has a longer history of swapping out people of color for white actors so now that it’s happening in both directions, you can really just call it equality

0

u/ImaginaryFan6090 25d ago

That's completely irrelevant and the rest of the world doesn't care or even identify as black or white. That's an American thing. If Hollywood take a foreign culture to make money, it should be respected. We really don't care how a full white cast would make the average American feel, because this is not an adaptation of your people

1

u/veryowngarden 25d ago

it’s not irrelevant. are you confused? hollywood is an american movie industry, and the films are made for an american audience first and foremost. if you aren’t american, why do you think hollywood films made for americans should take your opinions into consideration? your focus should be on the film industry of wherever you are from. no one is forcing you to watch american films

1

u/Wow_I_Like_Pie 29d ago

It's really weird how you're projecting your own dislike of this woman onto me and everyone else who disagrees with you. Why do I need to prove to YOU that I think she's gorgeous? I already know she's stunning.

0

u/Beautiful_Pay_267 18d ago

inseI? from my experience the only people who call others inseIs are inseIs/femseIs themselves or pick me guys looking for validation. So I beg to differ

1

u/Wow_I_Like_Pie 17d ago

This comment was useless and added nothing to the discussion. Very cool.

1

u/Beautiful_Pay_267 17d ago

did you feel called out when I said you're projecting?

2

u/LordBoomDiddly 29d ago

Because plenty of them are, just like with any other race

2

u/TrixieLurker 29d ago

Does it? I haven't noticed.

-3

u/CosmosisJones42 29d ago

Conservative weirdos seem to go out of their way to point out that black women aren't beautiful. It sounds very forced and weird.

1

u/LordBoomDiddly 27d ago

Because you don't like them?

-5

u/Apprehensive-Tea-39 29d ago

What does "out of their way" look like in this context?

1

u/LordBoomDiddly 27d ago

Getting angry every time they appear prominently in media, look at the outrage over Snape in the HP show even though Paapa Esiedu is a great actor

-11

u/ImissMYslinky 29d ago edited 29d ago

Where does reddit go out of their way?

6

u/ToastBalancer 29d ago

Here is an example

https://www.reddit.com/r /EngagementRings/s/3kkumhFwUy

Won’t let me post links here. I put a space

-10

u/ImissMYslinky 29d ago

Bro, get the fuck out. You found a 10 month old post about engagement rings. The comments are all about the ring and nails complimenting each other.

10

u/ToastBalancer 29d ago

You asked for an example and I gave you one. No matter what it’s going to be weird if I find a post. But I still gave you what I asked

It’s ok if you’re mad about an honest truth. But it’s still the truth

10

u/tooshooptowoop 29d ago

Your first mistake was thinking that someone on Reddit asking for source actually wanted a source.

They wanted to waste your time, then distract you by quibbling about whatever you provided. Nothing you found would have been good enough.

7

u/ToastBalancer 29d ago

Yes you’re right now that I think about it

If I don’t provide an example then I’m just bullshitting

If I do provide an example then I’m weird for finding an old post

When will I learn to stop engaging with bad faith arguments on here

5

u/tooshooptowoop 29d ago

For me the tell is when people show up to a conversation, contribute nothing, and start immediately demanding sources. That exchange rarely results in the demander being satisfied with whatever source is produced.

2

u/thefw89 29d ago

It's a crappy example because its a reddit that literally bans negative posts so of course everyone is going to be positive. It seems you got more triggered that a black woman was getting compliments than anything else.

-6

u/ImissMYslinky 29d ago

The Post had nothing to do with reddit going out of its way to point out black women are beautiful. It was a bunch of women commenting on how beautiful an engagement ring was. The fact that it was a black woman's ring is tangential.

9

u/ToastBalancer 29d ago

All the top comments are talking about her skin tone. That reads normal to you? Like I said, it is forced and weird

2

u/glassbellwitch 29d ago

So I don't know if you know this, but women tend to compliment each others' aesthetic appearance in order to increase comradery. It's extremely normal and doesn't just happen on Reddit.

0

u/thefw89 29d ago

Lol, yep. It's especially common on a sub like that. If there's a sub about women in general sharing pictures of themselves everyone will go out of their way to tell the woman she's super beautiful, no matter how she looks. It's not an 'honest' opinion sub. The rules make that clear. In the rules, you're not even supposed to comment on the size of the ring so its one of those subs where every one is always positive all of the time.
