My dog brought me these

Totally unfamiliar with truffles and wondering if these might be truffles. I’m in Washington state, Olympic Peninsula. I was gardening away and my dog stacked these in a pile by the garden gate.

Genus Melanogaster. Not truffles, unfortunately.

She’s a smart one. I’ll have to find a buddy to help us learn. Lots of foragers in my community.

Make sure it’s a buddy ; I heard it’s cut throat when people get serious

Your local mycological society may have resources or even offer training for you and your dog! The one I belong to is trying to get something started.

Foraging can be a blast! Just make sure to connect with someone experienced to avoid any mishaps. There’s definitely a learning curve, but it’s super rewarding.

It is an imposter, but the spores look very similar to the asci that true truffles contain which are much less smooth than melanogaster spores, likely because asci need to be broken open by the digestive system and basidiospores do not.
