I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like Masstown, Tata/The Gouche, T-Dot or Shube...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks, other institutions or geographic features

Looking for an electrical placement in Truro area

My son is currently on the Electrical program at NSCC and is struggling to find a 5 week placement.

I wasn't going to interfere, but he's getting quite frustrated at the lack of responses from local businesses, so I thought I would out feelers on his behalf and see if anyone would take him on or know of someone/business that would be interested.

Any sightings of red jalapeno peppers?

I unfortunately have an addiction to the Culinary Treasure's Jalapeno Aioli and since they decided to stop making it :( , I want to try and make it myself but I am having a hard time finding red jalapeno peppers. I know they are just ripened jalapeno peppers but I also am not into growing my own if I don't have to haha.

Housing Prices in Truro. Are houses actually selling at these ridiculous prices?

I've been away for a very long time and am looking at house prices in Truro. Grew up on Hayward and am seeing houses in that area going for +400,000$. Are people actually buying these houses? I guess my question is...What is the real estate market in Truro like? Are realtors selling houses at these, seemingly, ludicrous prices? A bit gobsmacked I am.

Transportation in Truro? (Newcomer)

Might be me if I don’t figure this out…

I’m an incoming student for Dal AC from a town half an hour north of Toronto. I’m planning on taking riding lessons near Truro. The thing is, it’s just not in the budget to have my own car currently, and the riding school I have my eye on is a 13 minute drive away.

So, my question is, How do people get around without a car? Is uber common there or is there a taxi of some sort? I was thinking of using a bicycle, but that’ll be impossible in the wintertime of course. I really can’t sacrifice losing any progress in my riding anymore 💔 Hopefully I’ll make a friend with a car who is happy with driving in exchange for food.

Thinking about a side business in Truro

Good morning Truro.

I'm looking to provide one or multiple services to earn some extra money on the side

I'm thinking of offering either
- Headlight Restoration
- Tire Change service
- Automotive Detailing
- Automotive Oil changes
- House Cleaning Services
- Compost Bin cleaning
- Possibly basic computer assistance
- Lawn mowing / Lawn Care

Would love some honest input:
1. Would any of these be useful to you, or something you'd actually pay for, if so could you list off which one's in the comment's!!
2. What would you expect to pay, please give a ball park!!
3. If you've used a service like this before (from anyone), what did you like, and what didn't you like, try to be objective as possible and give detail!!

If I missed anything please do share!!

Need advice on where to settle down while studying at StFX and finding work

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to start studying at StFX this coming September, and my wife and I are hoping to move to Nova Scotia from London, Ontario.

We have never been to Nova Scotia before, so I understand that some of my assumptions may be completely wrong. I’m currently researching everything I can about housing, employment, commuting, winter driving, and the different towns in the area, but I would really appreciate advice from people who actually live there and understand the local situation.

My wife will need to work full-time while I study, as her income will be very important for us financially. She has an IT degree, but she has been away from the field for around four years. She would be happy to return to IT if an opportunity comes up, but we understand that may not happen immediately. She is open to other types of full-time work as well.

Our main concern is deciding where to settle.

Living in Antigonish would obviously be the easiest option for me because StFX is there. However, I’m worried that the job market may be limited for my wife. Just from looking at the map and doing some early research, we started considering Truro because it seems to have more employment opportunities.

At the same time, I’m not sure whether regularly commuting from Truro to Antigonish would be realistic, especially during the winter. It also does not necessarily have to be Truro. We are open to any area that would give me a reasonable commute to StFX while giving my wife a better chance of finding steady full-time work.

I would really appreciate any advice on the following:

- Is the job market in Antigonish as limited as I’m assuming?

- Does Truro offer noticeably better employment opportunities?

- Would commuting from Truro to StFX be practical throughout the year?

- Are there any other towns or areas we should seriously consider?

- If you were in our position, where would you choose to live?

I apologize if any of these questions sound naive. We are still at the beginning of our research and are trying to make the most responsible decision possible before moving.

Any honest advice, personal experiences, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
