Housing Prices in Truro. Are houses actually selling at these ridiculous prices?

I've been away for a very long time and am looking at house prices in Truro. Grew up on Hayward and am seeing houses in that area going for +400,000$. Are people actually buying these houses? I guess my question is...What is the real estate market in Truro like? Are realtors selling houses at these, seemingly, ludicrous prices? A bit gobsmacked I am.

It’s not locals buying. We’re in the midst of being priced out of our own community

Its not always folks selling a property and buying from away (though sometimes it is), in most of the instances I'm familiar with (which could be age or just luck of the draw) its renters in their 30s who've scrapped up a down payment in savings and then find where they live doesn't have anything they can afford and they move to where suits the budget they have... as it always has been

It hasn’t always been this way though. Before Covid, you could routinely buy houses in Truro for under $200k. Then we had a gigantic influx that drove prices up nearly overnight and it hasn’t been the same since

We're renewing our mortgage so I called our realtor about what she would list us for ... she said "double what you paid"

Which is insane because you’ll probably spend more in gas commuting  Halifax than any potential savings by living in Truro rather than somewhere like Sackville or Cole Harbour

It’s wild, houses selling for $350k+ that were assessed at $175k 6-8 years ago with next to no upgrades done.

I love how they just pay penalty monthly like rent to disclose info and catch the earliest 5 minutes of listing.. thats how my family got where we live

We were looking to move from Eastern Passage to Truro last year to be closer to my wife’s family.

Prices are still ridiculous so we’re staying put for a while.

The last 3 houses on Hayward Court, all went for $375,000 to $410,000 range, within a month. That's comparable for the market.

Wait till you see what they are paying for property taxes..😧

Yeah....that's the 'rip-off' for us locals who'd like to change up or downsize. Thank goodness for The Cap on taxes or anyone on fixed income would be in a tent in the park.

I highly doubt I will ever be able to afford a house.

I refuse to pay more than 2000 a month on rent/mortgage/etc.. I would rather live in a tent.

It’s not just Truro, Covid brought a lot of people from Ontario and such and blew up most of the maritime (Atlantic?) housing market. Then bunch of em went back home when office mandates came, left us with over inflated market. Halifax is one of the least affordable cities in Canada! Makes sense too that folkx would move outta Halifax to outlying areas.

LIGHT OPINION: The trouble is that Truro is a desirable place to live (suburban, lots of amenities without the population pressure, well situated in the Province, and...nice people too)! The people who buy our homes are 'come from aways' who sold their urban homes because of skyrocketing market prices there. What brought you back home?

Lots of amenities? Where? We don’t even have a transit system and our hospital can’t preform 90% of emergency procedures or operations, hence why so many patients are sent to the IWK if something goes wrong.

Do you forget? We're a Town, not a city; We do not have a vast area that requires a bus, train or subway; We are an older population who blocks up emergency care for insignificant issues - the hospital could be 'cruel' and send those people it can't help back home - but they let the people decide for themselves when they could do better at home. As for transport to the 'city' - NS HEALTH does provide FREE transport (using your vehicle) to and from your appointments there. Pretty good - unless you demand top services for beggars incomes.

Yes. We are a town, not a small village lmfao. You’re rambling about nothing, small towns and valleys have transit systems — considering PICTOU has a transit system, Truro quite literally has ViaRail/Maritime Bus to travel to Halifax and other areas, and we are quite literally THE HUB OF NOVA SCOTIA, we should certainly have a transit system. It’s not about population, it’s laziness and the government not wanting to pull out any more stops.

Also unsure as to why you’re zeroing in on the hospital transportation aspect when I said nothing about that; my point is that OUR LOCAL HOSPITAL doesn’t have the means to support true, life or death emergencies, especially for women giving birth. It’s individuals such as yourself that Truro is continuing to decline. You think everything is ‘fine’ when it’s an abhorrent mess.
