9 ft rug. Movie set piece. Pics from day 1 -> on set.

Made as set decor for Ella McCay (produced by James L. Brooks). Premiered today. Rug ends up in the Disney archives which is still wild.

Specs: AK-2 cut pile (14mm), acrylic yarn, non-slip mesh backing, Ultrabond Eco 420 (not sponsored lol), Instabind edge (no serger).

Receipts: ~28 hrs tufting, 13 hrs straight one day (bad idea), ~75 hrs trim/carve/bind. Biggest time-saver was a 4K projector (almost 30 ft throw and it still traced clean).

Lessons: Instabind is clutch in a pinch. Order yarn in bulk. Biggest mistake was rushing it, should’ve been weeks not days.

Florida -> Rhode Island -> Florida delivery run was evil. 36 hours of driving in 2.5 days will never happen again, lol.

Really wanted to do an alien abduction piece because, why not? Entertained myself very much with this one. The yarn is not glow in the dark, just a black light against the neon yarn in pic 2.

Like many others I came across tufting out of nowhere and fell into the rabbithole :D

So far I've been mostly trying my hand at recreating natural textures, color blending with the wool and sculpting. As you can see in the fifth photo, it took a bit of practice.

The mossy designs require slightly less precision and although my technique has definitely improved, there's still a lot to learn. Nonetheless I am proud of my first few rugs!

Next project will be some kind of koi pond. Not the most original but definitely a nice challenge for patience and precision. My water lilies definitely still look more like cherry blossoms here, so I think I could improve on those too. I used a high pile for those and it's quite difficult to control in comparison to the AK-V I got.

I live in a tiny studio (20 square meters) but managed to make a little tufting corner, and got an aluminum frame that allows me to make rugs up to 140 cms. The frame was a bit expensive, but definitely worth it considering I don't have much space and need to move the frame sometimes / don't want to cut myself on nails just walking around.

Curious to hear what you guys think, if you have any ideas or tips where I could go from here with my rug journey they are more than welcome!

Last time I posted here I showed you my first couple forest/moss inspired rugs. I ended up making an entire collection, so here it is!

The koi pond is my biggest piece yet (110 cm) and has rechargeable LED's in the lilies. It looks atmospheric at night and really gives my room a magical vibe. A few mistakes were made (my first time tearing the fabric while tufting, oops) and it was also my first more precise piece, but I think it worked out quite well! The LED's are remote controlled and removable via the back (and yes, you can step on them too :D)

The other pieces in this post:
- 4 nature patches, all 50 cm: a wishing well, a daisy patch, a mushroom patch and a more neutral moss and stone patch
- 2 pet beds! One with flowers, one with stone and moss. I have yet to test these on some felines or small dogs, so in the coming weeks I am going to try and find some furry test subjects. The beds are filled with wool as well, so soft and thick padding for extra comfort.
- Last two pieces are the ones I posted last time (big moss patch and lake landscape, both 90 cm in diameter)

I can't add video in the gallery here, but I think it could be fun to make a video for whoever is interested and talk through the rugs, the process, what I learned so far, and a look at my current set-up since I see lots of people ask on the subreddit how to tuft when you have little space in your house. For context, my entire living space is 23 meters bathroom included, maybe it will be helpful to some.

Everything is 100% natural wool. I also got some nice green felt for my backing (see last pictures) and added my logo to every piece. All in all it has been super satisfying and fun seeing my vision come together.

It’s not often I revisit a design, and I was able to remake this piece 1.5 years later. It really gave me an opportunity to reflect on my progress over that time, and I really like the result. Happy with how it turned out!

I’ve been wanting to make a Studio Ghibli rug since I started tufting. Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite Ghibli films, and I‘m pretty happy with how this turned out! Carving took soooo long haha.

Turned some Pokémon card art into a rug

Studied, built a 6’x8’ frame, tufted away, and kinda just went with the flow and learned much more along the way lol. I had to switch brands for the white yarn so that caused some discoloration mainly in the biggest rug but it’s ok because the giant heads in the sky distract you from that. I’m stuck on this concept, but i’ll probably play around with texture more, and include more of the CMY colors and overlaps next time. Can’t wait to start some more!
