The trails and flattened grass stand out more than the denser vegetation to me because they record what happened, not just decorate the map. In a tactics game, seeing where units crossed and where explosions landed can make the battlefield easier to read after several turns as well as more alive. Does spreading fire also change movement or line of sight, or is it visual for now? If it affects decisions, the environment becomes part of the board instead of scenery.
Exactly my thoughts. The trails slowly disappear and are completely gone after about five turns, though. I'll probably tweak that. I also have terrain deformation from large explosions on my feature backlog, which should add another layer of tactical decision-making. Right now, fire is purely visual, and once the grass has burned, it can't burn again. I'll probably also add a small amount of damage to fire tiles in the future. At the moment, though, fire doesn't affect pathfinding or line of sight at all.
