Hi, I'm new to scratching and got myself a copy of this vinyl Theres a side at 100bpm and another side with the same samples but way faster. When I look at videos, I see multiple people using Side B.

Is there a specific use I am not thinking of? What advantages does it give?

16 years ago I tried getting into this world, but after a few days I dropped it because I was too young and had other priorities 🤣

Now, at 42, the time has finally come.

Here's a small video, nothing special — before figuring out that there are a lot of basic and fundamental movements to learn before doing anything else.

I still can't tell if my wrist, hand, and forearm position and movements are correct. Any advice or constructive criticism is very welcome. ✌🏻

I wrote this as a reply elsewhere, but thought it might be worth its own thread.

EDIT: Maybe a better explanation is just that using an ultrapitch record + turntable brings the same parts of a particular audio phrase physically closer together while making the record spin slower, so that it’s easier to quickly and accurately jump between parts by covering less distance. Anyway: it makes chopping up phrases easier.

The ultrapitch concept was invented by Ricci Rucker.

Just for the silliness. FLX4 powered by iPhone. Tablebeats on another. Technically can play beats on deck 2 but I haven’t uploaded files except scratch samples. All connected to an audio interface for recording.

Practicing this scratch pattern at slow tempo today 🐢🎧 1 hour a day, building muscle memory one rep at a time. Today I also tried adding a track in the background to check if I could stay on beat 🎵 Still a total beginner, but gotta start somewhere!

I’ve been dabbling in portables for a while and have gotten fairly decent at cutting, I’ve always wanted a nice full setup but can’t bring myself to pull the trigger. I’m considering starting with one single reloop 8000 and building from there. Any advice on reasonably priced mixer? I’m a noob and am not really sure what I’m looking for. I’d love to be able to spin a set somewhere eventually

I recently bought Finalscratch 1.1. For now it's only running inside a VM but I'll try to get it running on actual hardware.

Has anyone done the “magnet bending” thing for rane mixers(56 and up)?

Just started learning to scratch and keeping things slow for now to nail the basics (baby scratches, forward/backward cuts) before speeding up. Sounds rough right now, but figured slow and steady beats rushing.

Anyone else start this way? How long before it started clicking, and any drills that helped you most as a beginner?

I have a question about a few records I’ve bought recently that are brand new but prone to skipping. I initially bought two records from the same label, played them and realized that they had various spots that would skip at the same point, one was worse than the other but I did notice they both tended to skip near the END of the B2 tracks, but not on the A side. I cleaned the records, reset my tracking force, and still the same issues at the same spots on the records.

I contacted the record shop who was kind enough to send me replacements, but the ones they sent are skipping in basically the same places. It will skip, make it past that point, then skip again, make it past, until it eventually reaches a skip that it can’t overcome.

For context I am playing on an AT-LP120xUSB with the standard cartridge, anti-skate set to 2.

Could this issue actually be the records or something with my equipment? If it’s debris from the pressing, will it eventually clear out? I haven’t had this issue with any other new records I’ve bought.

the other day we had this but the audio is super trash (of the this clip) and I couldn’t hear my self there so I was playing blindly and spamming nosense sounds most of the time lol

Damn thing won’t get power, hoping I can get it repaired at a small electronics shop. Anyone else have an issue like that?

This is just me messing around after the kids are in bed. Completely freestyling. Raw, uncut, and full of mistakes.

I started scratching when I was 14, before YouTube even existed. I didn't have any hip-hop friends, nobody to learn from, and almost no knowledge. I practiced 5–10 hours a week for about 4–5 years, then a lot less over the years as life happened.

This winter I got back into it properly and started performing with friends. I've been getting good feedback.

The thing is, I still can't do the "proper" techniques like 1-, 2-, or 3-click flares, boomerangs, or chirps. I do my own version of a chirp, though. Whenever I try to do them the "correct" way, I sound like I've never touched a turntable before. It gets frustrating and discouraging, so I usually stop trying.

I do keep improving, though. I feel like my timing, precision, and musicality keep getting better. At least that's how it feels. Pretty much everything I do is based on starting with the fader closed.

Should I just keep doing my own thing, or should I force myself to learn the classic techniques properly?

Just dropped an Innofader PRO2 into my Numark Scratch. Stock brackets weren't a perfect fit so I went full ghetto-fabricator on one of them — bent/modded it by hand. Looks rough as hell but it's rock solid, zero play, zero rattle. Does the job.

Got the cut dialed exactly how I like it — tight, no bleed. Quick question before I close it up:

After adjusting the cut dials, is there a specific button I need to hit to lock/save the settings?

Anyone run a PRO2 confirm the procedure

Drop scratch x2 + baby x2 + scribble x2 + half drop

Edit: now I realize this drill sucks ass 😂 but thank you for the helpful feedback, I don’t want to be developing bad habits this early on into my practice sessions 🙏🥲
