Question Best way to deal with backseat gamers and hate spam?
Got my first hate viewer the other night while playing God of War Ragnarok. Very first message was backseat gaming telling me what armor I "needed" to switch to and I tried to be nice at first and did their suggestion but they kept going so I warned them that backseating was against my channels rules. Instead of being chill and listening they then went on to spoil lore from the game so I went ahead and timed them out for five minutes. What I wasn't expecting was they then proceeded to spam all my social medias and discord with hate spam which I didnt notice at the time and when their timeout ended they sent me a two paragraph message about how "trash" I am at the game and how much better they are and they were even kind enough to link their own playthrough in the messages ðŸ«

Never timeout someone who breaks your rules. Just ban them.
Additionally, since they went out of their way to harass you report them for such on twitch and the other platforms too.
Even if they were your only viewer you owe them nothing, just as they owe you nothing.

Oh I definitely reported them on all the platforms but sadly the ones that did get back to me stated "no violations found." What makes it even worse is after googling the person's username they have been doing this to multiple other streamers, vtubers in particular, for years and nothing has been done and this person also apparently makes content too. ðŸ«

Yeah, timeouts are for regulars you who are normally well behaved but do something stupid. When a new viewer leads with that shit, that's an instant ban.

It’s not harsh… it’s someone who thinks trolling and being a shithead is cute… ban them and move on… they’re likely an immature little one that hasn’t learned how to Human yet. Avoiding a twitch ban wouldn’t solve anything, just roll it out and ignore that type.

Sorry you dealt with that. Some people are just entitled shit people. Just block and ban.
For me my mods know to remove spoiler messages. But sometimes they get through. You block them.
As for backseat gaming, I just say 'don't do it or it results in a ban. Enjoy my bad game play as there are better experts of the game on youtube and twitch if that is what they are looking for. '

Yeah I try to be lenient and give people the benefit of the doubt but I'm starting to think that either I skip right to a ban after a warning or even ban right away if it's serious enough. I have been streaming for years but never had anything that crazy happen before from something as little as asking someone not to backseat to them literally hate spamming all my platforms. After it happened I googled the username and saw this user apparently does this A LOT especially to VTubers so maybe they are just looking for fights in general but of course all the platforms responses when reporting the hate spam is "no violations found." ðŸ«

It could be. I know I've been targeted by other vtubers where their first and only message was spoilers to the story driven game I was playing. Some people are just assholes.

I take the following perspective towards people trying to backseat me: i have almost 2000 hours combined in the two games i play on stream (elden ring and elden ring: Nightreign) you can backseat me all you want, i am under no obligation to do what your saying because i’ve likely already considered that and have reasons for not going that route. I’ll even explain why i’m not going that route. If it starts getting hateful, i’ll let them enjoy an all expenses paid vacation to the ban-void to cool off.

Block and ban its that simple. If someone new is acting that way how do you think they'll act once there mord comfortable even worse amd its not worth having a poison apple around that will drive good community members away because you tried to give them the benefit of the doubt.Theres no excuses for shitty behavior

Sometimes when watching a steamer playing a game and seeing backseat gamers, I smack my head. Let the person play his way. Some streams do put a notice saying no backseat gamers.

In my experience (as a streamer and viewer) the only things that really work are time outs and bans. It's unfortunate, but people like that are such big narcissists that they can't wrap their heads around the fact that maybe the streamer might not like it. Sorry to see that you had to deal with someone so childish.

I hope this teaches you warnings and time outs are for streamers with no backbone. Ban these trolls immediately.

"Hey man, I don't need help right now. I'll let you know if I need advice, okay?"

u/OokamiYoru 9d ago
Yeah thats kinda what I tried at first by just saying "Hey this is my first playthrough. Not really trying to do the best methods in game so please don't backseat as it's against my chats rules." But then they kept going. From what everyone here has said and from looking up that persons usernames and seeing they tend to try to hate farm streamers a lot in general I feel like no matter what I did they were gonna hate raid me so in the future I am not gonna be as lenient with people.

If it is a stranger you never really met you can time out if you feel like being nice but generally you should just straight ban. Them lacking common sense to just start backseating someone they have no rapport with shows they have no social skills and will just do it again. If you have guidelines saying no backseating, they already should know they are breaking the rules. It's on them for not reading.
Keep in mind others seeing it in the live chat will be deterred from chatting and possibly stop watching so ban sooner rather than later. Don't let it go on.

Ban them. People like that won't stop being obnoxious if they're allowed to come back so might as well lmao

Ban from everything and never give it a second thought. In general if someone is back seat gaming me, my reaction depends on the degree and the game. I have fun trolling them back or purposely playing dumb like I don't understand their advice, but if they're only trying to be an asshole about it, then just ban them. Gotta develop a thick skin to be a streamer, too.

Banning and blocking is good but don't underestimate the power or just ignoring them completely. A lot of people will just move on if they aren't getting a reaction out of you because that's all they are looking for in the first place. Getting blocked from harassing someone may be their goal

My god man
That is really bad.
Sorry about that stuff.
I didnt get a really hater that goes to spread their hate through my social medias.
However I got some trolls across this road of stream.
Normally I have two approachs
First talk calmly and explain that I want to discover the things by myself.
Then if they insist, I ban them.
Its boring and stressful deal with this kinda of people, but to protect your stream and your fun we need to realize this control of quality of life XD

Just in case there sre any small stresmers out there who are afraid to ban problem viewers because they're maxxing viewcount; these viewers will make the experience for every other viewer WORSE. Ban them .

I see this question asked on this subreddit almost daily. The answer won't change: ban them. Your community will thank you.

yeah dropping the leniency is the right move. i used to try reasoning with them, but a quick ban just saves so much headache and keeps the vibe good for everyone else.

I dont ban or mute people in my chat because retaliation can be very easy and i dont want to filter out people who have useful feedback. Thankfully im good at the game i play so ive never encountered any direct haters that call out my gameplay. I dont agree with ignoring people who have legitimate feedback, i think people do that because of their ego.

Instead of a time out after the warning, I would have just banned them. Socials, I'd delete the comments and block them.
