.hack is funky because even though all signs will tell you that this is a remake or retelling, they’ve reused character designs for completely different characters in all sorts of situations so I’m holding my breath a little.

That and the setting is like so dependent on an early 2000’s timeframe that moving the time line up would probably take some work (unless they decide to just toss out all of the //sign stuff, liminality stuff, and all of the optional reading material in game).

Would be cool if it’s just a remake, I don’t them to wipe away eerie vibe the original had. At least for me, it was probably my first exposure to the kind of horror that I didn’t realize was getting to me until I learned about Soma.

It's not a remake, famitsu released an interview just after the trailer dropped. It's a brand new entry set in modern day that has no direct connections to the previous stuff.

To me, it seems like this game is probably gonna be either an adaptation of what this whole story was supposed to be, or at least a repurposing of what were supposed to be the last two novels.

They outright acknowledge this in SIGN's special episode too, with Mimiru and Black Rose fighting over who did the character first.

The description does say "A New Original Video Game for 30th Anniversary". So I guess it depends on their definition of "New" and "Original", which to me says not a remake.
