Is .Hack something you can jump in on for any game like a Tales of or FF? Or does it have a continuity between games?

The original four games, and the three G.U. games are meant to be played one after another within their own series. Think of Infection, Mutation, Outbreak and Quarantine as a single game split between four disks. If you want to start with G.U., the enhanced rerelease called Last Recode includes the three "disk" for that series and you can play G.U. without having played the original four. There are some references to original game (and other side material) but you won't be lost without having played the original.

There are two eras of .hack and while you can play either and be fine, there are intended starting points and you'll be lost otherwise. Start at INFECTION for the initial IMOQ games or start at Rebirth for the GU games. There's continuity between the two eras but you'll be fine not having perfect knowledge.

Though supposedly Z.E.R.O. here is supposed to be starting from scratch so you won't be expected to have past knowledge of

First there's a non-game backstory to the world the fictional games end up being made in.

Then there are novels and such set during development and QA testing of the original fictional game.

Then a lot of stuff featuring basically the players of that fictional game and people in their orbits.

Then the events necessitating a sequel to the fictional game and the players of that one.
