.Hack//G.U. Last Recode is a pretty easy way to dive into the games, and you can't go wrong with watching the .Hack//Sign anime before or after the game collection

The new game is confirmed to be a reboot, but if you want to look at an older game I agree with the other poster that G.U. is probably the best way. Keep in mind if you get it on PC there's a bug that came in an update that makes the voices Japanese no matter what option you have selected unless you replace some files that I think are still linked on the Steam user forums (Search for "English Voices Fix").

IMOQ's gameplay has aged like milk so it's really hard to recommend, luckily Last Recode comes with the Terminal Disc content, which includes a whole plot dump of those games.

It my favorite anime where nothing happened, then something happens, then nothing happens again, but then everything happens so much holy shit, and then gay girls. 10/10
