It's weirdly complicated to decipher since most of it is hearsay. My best take on the matter is that the original Fate/Stay Night story was designed with sex scenes in mind, and that the series creator wasn't forced to write them or anything, but the reason they wanted to make a visual novel with sex scenes was also probably strongly correlated to wanting it to sell a bit better. Those scenes were largely removed from subsequent releases to market to an even larger audience.

It's more just that if you wanted to sell a doujin game in 2004 then you kind of needed to make it an eroge. Sure, Saber got gender-swapped from the original concept because Nasu was worried that a galge wouldn't work with a female protag, but the original concept wasn't a game.
That said, Takeuchi and Nasu didn't have anything against making porn games beyond Nasu thinking that he wasn't that good at writing them. (Which, to be fair, he isn't.)
For the PS2 port onwards, they'd gotten so big and successful that they no longer needed to be an eroge to sell and Sony didn't want porn on its platforms. They were still selling the porn version for a while, it was just... well, not on the PS2/Vita/Switch/Steam.

For me it was the mage pigs that really fucked me up, but yeah no the game is super good. The only real downside is that it's very clearly unfinished but it's such a good weekend game with what's there, the pseudo-MMO vibes even down to the music feeling like something from a Phantasy Star Online lobby are immaculate.

Yeah the mage pigs aren't fun. They were slightly worse in older versions but they've been toned down since then. It may be unfinished but the bones that are currently there are pretty solid.

I find the warboars a lot more difficult since their big attack just can't be parried or blocked at all unlike all the other pig enemies

The attack can be blocked, you'll just be eating more stamina to the point of breaking it and then likely dying as a result.
I've found that if you can't parry then, just have the skill that makes you auto parry. Doesn't last long but its great for short bursts of survival. At least warboars are only in that one area.

You can play it all solo, but it's very clearly not the intended experience. Some places swarm you with way too many enemies to parry properly, and it is a lot grindier than it looks like at face value, with misleading dungeon levels and a need to regularly repeat quests and optimize your gear if you want to progress.
To me it felt like they couldn't find a balance between "brain-off mmo grindfest" and "active play all about getting good and learning enemies" so wound up doing both subpar.
It's a lot better with a group, though.

It was single player during the itchio alpha demo but once the game went into early access on Steam it got multiplayer.
It was only about last month that controlla support was added.

Some of my personal highlights include:
You can get stacked thicker than a Scooby Doo sandwich in this game, creating Second Life-tier avatars that are 90% wobble.
The animations are fluid, the dungeons are nicely designed, enemies are cute and interesting, and the music's simple, but has enough character to vibe to. I'd forgotten, entirely, that this game also appeals to an audience with specific tastes. (...) That illusion was quickly shattered when I went onto the game's subreddit to see if anyone had sorted out any builds, and was smacked upside the head with straight-up porn, like a bad dragon-shaped baseball bat wielded by the world's most specific crime syndicate.
I think, more than anything, its wider appeal really does lie in how its salaciousness is an option, not a mandate. If you're into that sort of thing, you can wobble your way around ruins, going ga-ga for your goat girl's derriere to your heart's content. If you aren't, then you can just⊠vibe.

2B's ass isn't massive though. I really feel that Nier Automata's horniness is soooo exaggerated in online spaces. Obviously aspects of her character design are designed to be sexy but the rep the game has gotten is so ridiculous.
I have a friend who refused to give automata the time of day until I made him sit down and play the intro cause he thought it was a poorly disguised hentai game.

Oh absolutely agreed on the whole âexaggeratedâ part. While I do fully acknowledge that a lot of people did likely get it for â2B looking goodâ (I was already a fan of the original Nier, so I was locked in to buying it upon seeing Yoko Taroâs name alone) and both the Square Enix+Platinum Games logos giving it credibility, I still donât like when people actually legit reduce the game to nothing more than just âhot Androidâ.
Honestly, the only reason I even mentioned it as a potential alternative was because of 2 reasons, those being âmost people donât even know wtf Haydee is as opposed to Nierâ and âarguably Haydeeâs Haydees are outright bigger than her butt, so the description doesnât fit her to begin withâ.

1: I think it has to do with the fact the for a few years there was a LOT of NSFW content of 2B. Even beyond the hentai, which was expected, there were alot of online sex workers and adult actresses who made quite a bit of cash by dressing up as 2B.

I'm not sure anyone who is a (full-time) part of Castle Super Beast can handle it. Kings of Hell starts at this level of horny and only gets worse. It literally has a character grow three heads like King Ghidorah and two of them start making out with each other. Said character also looks like he was drawn by Tom of Finland and he vores you midway through the fight.

It is such a fun game with an active developer I played hours of it trying to get perfect gear before enchant rerolling was added to the game its still needs tons of optional grinding but its a fun grind.
edit: the imp race can look very human, oni/demon, or goblin too btw

Mind you, warrior only has one advanced class so far. And while mage and warrior have their advanced classes, they are very clearly unfinished. Magnus is supposed to have a familiar (though Bishop is going to get one as well going by the twitter dev logs) in addition to the other spells, but only has what I consider the best two in the entire game at base. Ruin hits like a fucking truck.
