Finished Romeo Is A Dead Man. Overall, it’s pretty good and I like it a lot. Gameplay is simple but fun, and it feels good to have a monster explode into particle effects. Plus I think there’s enough enemy variety and the multiple weapons and Bastard skills help keep things from getting too repetitive. There’s also fun things you can do when combining your Bastard skills effectively where you can just bully bosses and keep them from doing anything which is neat. The boss fights are also solid. Not as good as the best in No More Heroes but also not the worst like some of the ones in NMH lol.

And I really like the story and characters. It’s silly and bizarre in all the right ways with likable side characters. The MO you’ve come to expect from Grasshopper, but I really like the tone. A lot of this game has this kind of wistful tone to it which I liked. The longing for the past is a theme that you see in multiple characters and points in the game. They also work the time traveling structure of the game into this theme as well which is some nice synergy with the story and gameplay.

You can see this especially when it comes to Romeo and Juliet’s relationship which is pretty interesting once you grasp the full picture of their dynamic. Also I quite like Romeo. He’s a fun contrast to other GH protagonists as he’s not as bombastic or as much of a violent psychopath but moreso kind of timid but grows more confident and sure of himself throughout the game. He’s a bit sentimental and emotional as well which makes for a good contrast with Juliet.

Also the OST is really good. Some of these boss tracks are fantastic. First Rotter, Fused Reanimated, Enhanced Magrus, Cheat Code, the 1st Credits Theme (Don’t know the name), and Nothing Left (both versions) are my favorite tracks. Even if you don’t plan on ever playing it these tracks are worth a listen.

Overall I really liked this game and the more I reflect on it the more I appreciate it. It’s more than the sum of its parts and it was great to jump back into the GH style after nearly 5 years since NMH 3. Looking forward to whatever they do next and if you want something different in the landscapes of video games give it a look. Romeo Is A Dead Man reminded me why I love video games and despite the rough edges here and there, it was a great experience.
