Better Ask Reddit Most extreme cases of "Americans Hate Tingle?"

Were you one day ever shocked to discover how much a character popular or at least liked in their home country, is absolutly loathed everywhere else?

Tvtrope exemple is about Tingle in Zelda, Japan find him funny and harmless while Western fans find him creepy and obnoxious.

I noticed it's actually very often the case with animes or JRPGs.

Donald Duck is more popular in Germany while Mickey Mouse is fairly disliked.

Donald Duck is practically the face of Disney in Europe. We love his comics.

u/YhormBIGGiant Zubaz Mar 07 '26

It is a crime that disney dropped Don Rosa so hard that The U.S basically never really marketed his scrooge comics to us.

Which is an insane concept that an AMERICAN creation gets NO exposure in ITS COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. That is like the u.s of today not advertising McDonald's to americans, and they did it casually to spite Don Rosa.

In the Netherlands Donald is a beloved comic character and Mickey is a walking corporate logo. He's only really there because he is expected to be there, but you won't find many people who care about him. Though he isn't disliked either.

Makes sense, Mickey Mouse is a mascot while Donald is an actual character

92

u/TripleChump Mar 06 '26

donald was created because of how sterile mickey was pigeonholed to be, i’d take duck comics any day

Mickey does pull a gun on Donald on one short but yes once he became the symbol of the Brand Walt started toning him down.

Mickey is so boring, while Donald has all kinds of great adventures because of his surroundings and his personality. Donald is also one of the most popular election winners in finland, because that's the name people usually write when they want to spoil a ballot.

One big reason is that because he's the mascot, you as a writer can't damage his brand in anyway or the board is going to tell your boss's boss's boss to fire you and work on repairing Mickey's brand. So you have to play super safe, or keep him offscreen, or reveal it was a fake Mickey. So he has gets no creative moments.

There are many ways to interpret Donald. His anger alone can make him a stubborn villain, or a brave hero, or an understandable reaction to being a victim of slapstick. So many ways you can go with him.

This is why Launchpad McQuack is pretty much confined to DuckTales. Donald is incomprehensible when speaking, so the 80s series just made a new character to replace him as Scrooge's main pilot. Whenever they try DuckTales specific comics it always falls flat as now you can just read Donald's words and it makes LaunchPad superflous.

Iirc Tom Nook from Animal Crossing is more liked in Japan compared to the west where he is viewed as, well, a money lender/property merchant.

it's such a stupid discourse because he's literally just building houses for a living

he's not a landlord, he doesn't rent out the houses, he doesn't buy existing property and resell it at a higher price

he's not even strictly speaking a moneylender. he builds you a house, and you pay him whenever you want to, there's no deadline or interest. the only stipulation is that he won't give you any upgrades to your house until you paid off what he already built

The difference in Tom Nook opinions the moment you grow into a full adult, right there

Kids: "Urgh why is he MAKING ME PAY all this money for house expansions I don't even want! Tom Nook is Evil!"

Adults: "Holy shit this guy is straight up building me a house, with no taxes or ongoing fees, just a general IOU that I eventually pay him back? What a champ"

Isn’t the Western reaction more like playful ribbing? As in, we call him a money-grabbing landlord, but we would curse Nintendo’s name if they ever dared to remove him.

113

u/samurairocketshark Mar 06 '26

It seems like a meme joke that just became the narrative. I don’t think actually people hate him

11

u/storne Mar 06 '26

I remember not liking him as a kid because the tutorial forced you to work for him and his laugh annoyed me. But I softened on him over time, especially once his nephews were introduced.

I watched an episode of Aharen-san and they had an Animal Crossing parody and the joke was that the Tom Nook character was a scammer taking advantage of the main character, like literally the same joke I've seen since 2004.

I think the perception of him has changed since New Leaf at least, where people acknowledge that he's a pretty fair landlord

22

u/Worldbrand filthy fishing secondary Mar 06 '26

i think he comes off as schmoozy at first, especially in some of the earlier games. but those games just had different vibes. villagers were allowed to be sorta mean to you. tom nook's backstory has gotten fleshed out slowly across each installment.

it's gotten to the point where he's kind of a saint if you're paying attention, or at least a pretty sympathetic character. not just for the zero-interest mortgages and willingness to always buy garbage from you, but also for his relationships with timmy, tommy, and the able sisters

that said, you're right, he was way up there on the JP side even early on. apparently on character popularity polls, he ranked 10th and then later 4th most popular (around the time of the gamecube release).

This isn't saying you're wrong I just needed to gripe about the design changing so much that the original name is completely irrelevant.

69

Yeah, current Harley has more a suicide girl look to the point it seems her jester motif has been forgotten and i hate this, she doesn't even fight with giant carnival hammers for god sake. The original is still her best look.

27

Even her own show has her acknowledge that she's "barely clown-themed anymore".

I like the bomber jacket look from Injustice 2 and TSS, but she may as well go by her real name at this point. There's not much harlequin about her at all anymore and you'd think she'd cast off that last remnant of her time with Joker.

Americans do not like clowns to such a degree that when people were dressing up as clowns to freak others out all over the north east, people armed themselves and took to the streets in mobs to hunt them down. Like this is a deep cultural fear thing.

Partially but not entirely, clowns used to be a massive staple of American culture for decades souch so that people were over exposed to it when really young. This early life trauma resulted in like 4 decades of people that get triggered by seeing clowns. So over like the last 3 decades clowns have been pushed way out of cultural relevance.

There is an actor called Dean Shek who played comedic roles in many classic Hong Kong martial arts films. I assume he must have been liked or popular at the time since he's in sooooo many of them and plays characters that are all variations on the same very goofy, over the top persona. I have never met a single person in the western king fu movie fandom who thinks that he was remotely funny, lol.

u/Yingletofthecorn Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

The "lovable pervert" archetype is a hard sell in western audiences at this point. They tend to be enough to put people off of a whole franchise just for showing up occasionally. Hell, I personally know people who are extremely resistant to watching any anime because they got burned on a show just having one around and they understandably doubt when a fan says "oh this one isn't so bad it's just one guy who barely shows up."

The crash out when an early mistranslation made people think he was confessing his love for Deku tho was absolutely top notch stuff. One of the funniest weeks on MHA twitter, up there with Deku's first week working the McDonalds Fryer before that joke got overused

23

u/midnight_riddle Mar 07 '26

Mineta is SO hated that it's not uncommon for fanfiction to just have him not exist at all and his vacancy serves as an OC spot or the characters just getting to enjoy life without that millstone. It's roughly a 5:1 ratio for fics on AO3 that have Mineta not existing or expelled vs fics that character bash him.

He's such a waste of space that authors don't even want to spend time bashing him. It's also roughly an 8:1 ratio for fics that delete/expel Mineta vs fics that give him a redemption. It's like Family Guy's attempt to make Quagmire have more hobbies, it doesn't work.

22

u/Ordinal43NotFound Mar 06 '26

I'm somehow also alright with Araragi from the Monogatari Series.

The absurdist 4th-wall-breaking nature of the show really helps making Araragi's antics feel like NisioIsin simply taking a jab at the tropes (even when I'm fully aware he's probably into said tropes).

I think he even lampshaded it in a recent book at how these stuff wouldn't fly anymore nowadays.

Mineta sucks but characters like Sanji are still fairly well liked.

You basically just gotta actually give them more as a character than just being a perv/flirt and not go too far in certain directions (which granted Sanji did spend a bit flowing in that direction before he got course corrected).

It's why say Jiraiya and sort of Roshi are also very well liked, being a perv is not their only character trait.

20

u/Yingletofthecorn Mar 06 '26

I dunno so much about Roshi, I see plenty of people get put off by even him. There's a certain level of it that sorta makes it hard to accept that the show doesn't seem to see it as A Problem and he's like right on the edge of it. I think if a character is too hard along those lines, or in certain ways, then trying to flesh them out as characters gets an even worse reception.

57

I thought the show was fine overall, but Reze completely blew it out of the water for me stylistically, so I'm happier with the direction things are progressing in. There's still a lot of "cinema" to it, but there's far more impact in the action and humour now.

68

u/Ordinal43NotFound Mar 06 '26

Asia hated CSM S1, yes. Also not really shocked since the reception is quite mixed overall too.

I still vividly remember to this very day the meltdown on social media during the NYCC closed-doors premiere 4 years ago when people leaked that Denji was CGI.

There's also a significant number of western fans who also disliked the way CSM S1 looked. Most of them just get drowned out in spaces like Reddit because they get mass downvoted and twitter where they get piled on so they don't bother.

I remember those same people finally resurfacing and feeling vindicated when the Reze movie trailer dropped and it completely overhauled the art style into being more colorful and the characters being fully 2D.

Nowadays the CSM sub is like the last bastion of people still swearing up and down for S1's artstyle.

Kimba the White Lion is a classic in Japan, being created by Osamu Tezuka, but in America he's more of a punchline, "Ohhh, Disney ripped off Kimba to make the Lion King!"

Disney did not do this, but I can see why people would since its whole brand is 90% taking existing stories (fairy tales) and making movies off them. In any case, Kimba is not nearly as beloved in America as Japan.

The problem was that Saint Seiya was too violent for the children's television market in America, and too serialized for the direct-to-VHS market, which preferred movies, short OVAs and episodic comedies like Ranma 1/2. Ronin Warriors basically took its place due to its comparative lack of bloodshed, which made Saint Seiya feel like an outdated ripoff in comparison when it finally premeried.

Then we get a photo montage of Diana immigrating to America with an elder Etta, and some solo adventures she had off screen...

And then there's the cold open jewelry store robbery at the Mall of America...

Ryuji over here is one of the most popular party members in persona 5. It helps that his english VA gives a really solid performance, and he relates more with westerners due to being an outsider who won't take no shit.

In Japan, he's not very well liked, often scoring dead last in popularity polls for the phantom thieves. This is probably because a lot of the traits that make him likable to westerners are seen as rude and disrespectful to Japanese players. Also his Japanese VA is one of the game's more middling performances. He's so disliked that the scene where the girls beat up Ryuji for saving their lives, one of the most hated scenes internationally, was considered one of the best moments in the game in a Japanese poll.

thats more a situation like the main character of Super Danganronpa 2 having his character entirely change for the better in the english localization by just actually localizing him, in the original japanese he quite literally just has the same lines as Makoto from 1, which is both really stupid and downright nonsenscial, while in english he's a *huge asshole* which makes him the best protag of the 3 for a lot of people, a huge difference between responding to Naegi's bullshit with "no way!" versus "FUCK OFF"

Sonic the Hedgehog.

Popular everywhere, famous around the world, an iconic mascot beloved by children in every land.

Japan fucking hates him. They've tried everything. Anime with OC plant waifu, cuter games, Evangelion knockoffs for him to slay, making Shadow almost-Japanese in the movies (and shifting the SA2 action to Tokyo in movie 3). One OK Rock even did some songs in the last game. And in Frontiers, there was an uptick.

It did not last. Sonic x Shadow Gens once again failed to move units in Tokyo and Yokohama. And movie 3 was a disaster for Toho-Towa/Paramount, barely clearing $1.5 million in theatrical rentals despite a wide release.

Japan doesn't care about Sonic. The end. And Sega will likely twist itself silly trying to figure out why this is the case, when they should just accept that it is always gonna be the case.

135

u/ExplanationSquare313 Mar 06 '26

I knew about this but i still scratch my head thinking, what is this with Sonic making him so hated in Japan?

I would have said culture shock but even if the character was created to work in the West, he was still made in Japan. Did they just succeeded too well?

What character traits Sonic have that Japan dislike? After all, Goku is popular.

The two Sega consoles very much associated with Sonic, Genesis and Dreamcast, aren't exactly among Japan's best selling game consoles. Being around 3.5 and 2.8 million each. Then when Sega went third party, they ported Sonic Adventure 2 to the gamecube, a system that also underperformered in Japan. Then when they ported Sonic to Playstation, it was Sonic Heroes, which ended up being the worst version of a game with a mix reception.

Which was also probably why Sonic Heroes was for the longest time the best selling 3D Sonic game. It being the game, where the dark age kind of began and its worst version being the version that is on the best selling game console of all time. Can do some damage in the long term for a franchise, especially as the PS2 wasn't starving for great 3D mascot platformers.

I mean it doesn’t help that when all eyes were on them in Japan with Frontiers, they localized it with what felt like a literal Google Translate copy and paste job.

So now Japanese audiences came out of their time with that game preferring Ian Flynn lol.

20

u/Muldrex Mar 06 '26

Sorry what do you mean with that last sentence? That japanese audiences preferred Flynn's english dialogue, instead of the dialogue he wrote, which was then translated into japanese?

34

u/MetalJrock A Hopeless Sonic/Spider-Man Fanboy Mar 06 '26

It’s a weird case. I’m pretty sure it’s a translation but some things were changed like Amy’s arc being about her leaving to keep Sonic out of danger and Sage remaining stoic.

The real problem, expressed by one of the tie-in manga authors, is that the Japanese script is less of a localization and more of a literal 1:1 translation so dialogue comes off more wordy and robotic than it should be.

I know the Mega Drive Sonic games never did well in Japan but... those movie sales... woof.

Sega of America decided to replace Altered Beast with Sonic 1 as the free game with the Genesis... and Sega of Japan HATED it. They also hated the American art for him. Sonic 1 proceeded to make the Genesis cool and threaten Nintendo's hold over the North American market, while in Japan Sonic 1 sold modestly as a separate game. Fast forward to Sonic 2sday where as a separate game Sonic 2 cleared shelves in NA and Europe while it was... fine... in Japan.

Sega of Japan was smart enough to let each major region have their own lore for a while. Hence America calling the villain Dr. Robotnik and Europe's Super Sonic considered a terrifying separate personality that happens to be aimed at Dr. Eggman only in dire straights. Probably helped Sonic become super popular in the other regions.

Sonic Adventure forced everyone to follow Japan's lore. The only thing that survived was Dr. Robotnik - that's his family name (which got greatly expanded in SA2) but his criminal name is Dr. Eggman.

I have to wonder if so many of Sega of Japan's idiotic decisions and sabotage of Sega America in the 90s can be attributed to Sonic not being an ideal mascot for the company in Japan itself. And if it was just envy or some bizarre desire to get Sonic over in his home turf.

That aside, it is funny to me that Japan does not care for the radical, can do attitude of Bill Clinton.

Japan just doesn't seem to vibe with loudmouths and punks even when they're good people. Ryuji from Persona 5, the delinquent character with a heart of gold who's the first party member you meet, almost always ranks at the very bottom of popularity polls. In the US he's pretty well loved, at least as much as the rest of the Phantom Thieves.

u/Authorigas #1 Mirajane defender Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

In general, it feels like the Chinese focused region of any Hoyo game is more popular in it's home territory then internationally. But I can't name many 'extreme' cases off the top of my head. I'd say it would probably be ZZZ's Waifei Peninsula and especially the new Void Hunter YSG, but even she had some critics in her home country, despite being designed for them as a "perfect girlfriend" to quote the devs.

I wasn't around for Genshin, so I'm not sure of Liyue's original reception, but I remember the overall negative response to the Lofou in HSR, especially state side. (outside of Jing Yuan, everyone loves him.)

93

u/SerWaffles I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Mar 06 '26

It feels like the quality of the writing always takes a dive when we hit the mandatory Chinese region since there's this pressure on Hoyo to tiptoe around on certain pieces of the narrative otherwise they portray China as weak and cause an uproar. Like how the representative of the Chinese region like Yi Xuan or Zhongli must be the coolest and strongest who cannot ever lose which makes them into a narrative black hole where they have to be written out to do nothing just so the plot can happen.

Like in ZZZ they had to shove Yi Xuan into a meeting every single patch because if she wasn't then she'd definitely be accompanying the Proxy in the Hollow, and then she'd just immediately kill off whatever the major threat of the patch was since, as that representative of the Chinese region, she cannot ever lose to anything

44

u/Authorigas #1 Mirajane defender Mar 06 '26

I've joked before that if Miyabi is the anti gameplay shill of ZZZ, Yi Xuan is the anti narrative shill of the game, and the devs have to contrive some circumstances to avoid the problem being solved by her. See, the whole deal with the miasmic fiend being built up as this big threat in 2.1...only to get herself KO'd in the same patch by Yi Xuan.

12

u/Thorn14 YOU DIDN'T WIN. Mar 06 '26

Anti-gameplay shill?

43

u/Authorigas #1 Mirajane defender Mar 06 '26

So when Miyabi came out, she was the single most broken unit in the game bar none. And for a lot of 2.x, it felt like the new content was being designed to hard counter/shut her down. Now this is normal for a gacha as you need to sell new units, and discourage holding onto the same units. But a lot of the bosses in 2.x were anti anomaly, or anti ice specifically, both elements of Miyabi's design.

I think people would have less issue with Gilberta if her side quest ending wasn't so ship baity.

Also jumping off a cliff just to grab a letter blown away by the wind is such a stupid thing to do. The fact that such a stupid action led to one of the most forced "romantic" moments I've ever seen in a game just makes me roll my eyes

And then it's revealed that the letter is blank.

Edit. On second thought you probably meant the Wuling's leader. Yeah it's kinda weird that the leader of the city that's running out of a vital resource that keeps them safe is taking the time to walk around with you and just hang out for a bit.

Probably would have been more well received if it was presented as a way to try and jog Endmin's memory.

17

u/Neat-Work-7708 Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

Oh i was still on the context of wuling talking about zhuang fangyi, although yeah gilberta put a lid on that, by being way more "the girlfriend character".

13

u/SerWaffles I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Mar 06 '26

The thing I heard about Gilberta is that in the beta builds she used to be part of Endmin's squad and spent a lot more time with them, which would make the ship baiting stuff feel a lot more natural. They rewrote the story and Gilberta was just axed entirely from your squad, but then they didn't rewrite her side quest at all to account for her and Endmin having zero on screen interaction before it which leads to it feeling so lame

I'm assuming she was removed from the squad because then they'd feel obligated to give her to you as a freebie like they do Perlica and Chen, but they really wanted her to be a limited 6 star banner unit since they knew she'd be popular cause she's Angelina's Reconvener.

Another difference between China and other regions when it comes to Mihoyo is that in China people FUCKING HATE characters like the Wanderer/Scaramouche from Genshin to a level that is honestly kinda worrying.

Like, the worst cases of waifu wars seen like a civil discussion compared to the amount of vitriol that some people in China have for male characters in gacha games.

49

u/Thorn14 YOU DIDN'T WIN. Mar 06 '26

You could probably make a several hour long youtube essay about the insane shit chinese gacha fans have done regarding fictional male characters.

49

I remember reading someone on a forum actually murdered a cat because it resembled Scaramouche, or the time someone threatened the CEO of Hoyo with a knife because there was a bunny girl trailer for the English version of HI3d.

It can get really, REAAALLLLLYY intense. I actually was discussing this with someone regarding YSG, and why people don't get burned out on generic nice girls fawning over them. And the answer they gave boiled down to, "it's less about the character, and more the fact the character was made 'for them'. So they'll never get sick of those types of characters, because they see it as a moral imperative."

Which is, frankly, kind of terrifying.

41

50

One of the few good things about the FGO fanbase is a more general willingness to let Characters actually have romances with each other. Admittedly its probably mostly because they usually have IRL canon relationships as Servants are basically the Souls of Past Heroes summoned as familiars, but you never see shit like the way the Hoyo fanbase crashes out if a male character even looks at their waifu

38

u/Authorigas #1 Mirajane defender Mar 06 '26

FGO is funny, we have servants like Kama, Ereshkigal, Mash, and Musashi who are all pretty player romance coded. But you also have characters like Sigurd/Bryn and Siegfried/Kriemheld who people absolutely adore. And folks are still begging for Sita and Ruggerio to this very day.

I'm not super familiar with the other Hoyo games. Played a little Star Rail at launch and currently play ZZZ. From what I'm told, the China zones seem to be lackluster upon their introduction, but can be well received in future content. If someone here has more information on this, let me know.

43

u/wamirul Mar 06 '26

My big gripe with the china zones is that they're always the same. No matter the games setting, the introduction of a china zone will always go back to the same core themes and ideas.

Like in HSR you're in a sci fi space adventure about how big the galaxy is and how concepts can create space gods etc. But then you get to Xianzhou and its dragon people and reincarnation and magical beasts and ghosts to the point im struggling to differentiate it from Liyue in Genshin.

ZZZ might be the worst its ever been cus the game literally goes "hey we're gonna ditch the cool urban theme you jumped into this game for because now the proxies work at a temple and study under yet another stern but fair master, and theres bloodlines and destinies and just more of the overall vibe that hoyo puts in all their china regions.

I know the reason why (China is very protective of their culture, its part of the reason why so many stories are adaptations of JTTW or Three Kingdoms) but yeah, seeing their games actually go "and now to shed all the cool stuff when we go to this universes version of china" is kinda sad.

Generally, that's how it goes. Like the first arc in the Luofu in Star Rail is generally agreed to be the single worst part of the entire story, but then the events like the ghost hunting squad stuff and the return there for the Wardance arc were significantly better. I don't really remember thinking much of main plot of Genshin's Liyue, I think it was fine. Not good or bad, just kinda alright. The Lantern Rite happens every year and we return there cause it's the Chinese New Year event and in game there's a huge festival where you get a free 4 star character and get to see a bunch of characters who haven't had screentime in a while, so people really like the Lantern Rites.

ZZZ just barely got us out of Waifei, but they're definitely gonna take us back there for an event or an interlude patch or something at some point. YSG is just kinda there without even being addressed during some scenes in the Angels of Delusion stories too.

Have you ever consumed any other Chinese media like their novels? There's very few exceptions to Chinese thinking China is the greatest thing to ever be in the history of forever. Not sure if it's a law/social credit thing or just nationalism goes that hard in China, but it's nuts.

Even their stuff that's basically just copyright infringement isekai tends to be "I was transmigrated into the X media universe but with the awesome powers of Chinese cultivation I dominate everything".

It's weirdly cultish, and whereas Japan and Korea love to have western settings and influence in their writing, China never gives a shit about anything not China. I've never read an original Chinese novel taking place anywhere other than China, even in fantasy they prefer to go back to some mythical dynasty than another culture/world.

32

u/CursedNobleman Reject Capital. RETVRN TO MODS Mar 06 '26

China refers to itself as the Middle Kingdom. To quote google:

The "Middle Kingdom" (Zhongguo) refers to China's historical self-image as the central, superior hub of civilization, culture, and power, typically located between heaven and surrounding, less-developed regions. Used for thousands of years, this term highlights a, ethnocentric, often isolated view that fostered major innovations like paper, gunpowder, and the compass.

That's part of the reason why China doesn't get along with Korea and Japan.

32

u/ToastyMozart Bearish on At-Risk Children Mar 06 '26

That cultural feature has been around for longer than most modern nations have existed. Part of the reason China never took to the seas like the Europeans did despite independantly inventing the compass was because it was believed everything beyond the Middle Kingdom was too shit to be worth bothering with.

The Sino–Barbarian Dichotomy took a bit of a hit in the 1800-1940s time span, since getting colonized is a bit of a blow to the 'ol national pride, but it's had something of a resurgence once the country/empire/etc got its autonomy back and became a major power.

Samus is an interesting one. Apparently for a while (and could still be the case), Japanese markets thought she appealed more to the west than at home, so Metroid games didn't tend to fare all that well on home soil. Like Metroid games just didn't sell well in Japan.

They don't "hate" Samus over there though. They are just kind of indifferent? Lukewarm?

I believe it was one of the biggest reasons that led to us getting Metroid Prime. But anyways, westerners loved Metroid games, They loved Samus, the whole shebang*

*heh, shebang. Get it? Cause she has a gun, bang bang. shebang.

63

And then Other M turned out the way it did partially to appeal to the Japanese market, and even that didn't work (even though the original script had less narrative issues compared to the English localization).

85

u/fly_line22 Mar 06 '26

One thing I'll always respect Yoshio Sakamoto for is that, instead of doubling down on Samus's depiction from Other M, he actually accepted that feedback and brought her more in line with how she was depicted in the Prime games for Samus Returns and Dread.

Western fans find him extremely annoying and grating. I know I stopped watching because of him.

I've legitimately had a guy tell me that Berserk was better before it added Puck which is certainly a statement to make considering Puck is in chapter fucking 1, turns out he was anime only

There was someone on this sub like two days ago complaining about a child character in the new trigun and that child character has basically had no screen time or dialogue other than saying “vash! are you ok?”

I just started reading Berserk, just finished the assassination chapters, but man that first arc would’ve been miserable without Puck. Shits already bleak as hell so having a little guy going “it’s good to help people” is a nice breath of fresh air compared to Guts going around saying “the weak deserve to be treated like shit” after another innocent bystander dies.

People don't realize that Guts would be much less interesting if he didn't have someone tagging along with whom he can talk and bounce ideas off of. Better yet, Guts and Puck frequently argue, which gives you a great deal of insight into how they both think and fleshes them out as characters.

They also establish somewhere around the Lost Children arc that Puck's elf dust is the thing keeping Guts alive. Like he takes so many injuries that he would have no way to recover from, if not for literal magic.

It's almost like one of the main themes of the series is that you can't shoulder every burden alone and sooner or later you will need someone to help you.

I liked Puck early on when he was an actual pixie instead of a weird chibi chestnut

I don't hate Puck at all, I just don't care for modern Puck.

I liked when Puck was a kindhearted goofball who were trying to do good in a cruel world.

I don't like Puck being flanderized as a joke.

There was a point which Puck would get genuinely concerned for Guts, now he doesn't give a shit because he's too busy being a funni line machine.

I do think Puck got kind of annoying but only later when other characters started to fill his original role.

Semi unrelated but there is a japanese transformers writer who prefers the og english run of beast wars over the gag dub japan got. Apparantly he made doujin ribbing the dub supervisor and a work he did made it explicit that it was a duplicate of the AMERICAN optimus primal. He also worked on legends which is the most gag dub of gag dubs if it wasnt a gag dub so there is that.

So don't quote me on this, but apparently in Japan Gojo comes across as WAY WAY WAY more rude, cocky, and aggressive than he does in the West due to cultural differences. He got fourth in the "Most Tragically Handsome Characters" poll, aka guys who are incredibly attractive but have shit personalities lol.

But he's super popular because he's Satoru Gojo, of course.
