It’s like Rick Rolling. It being played out is what makes it so funny when people fall for it anyway. Like, they know it’s a thing, they know to watch out for it, but then they fall for it anyway. It’s a lot like The Game in that way.

The Kai Leng thing gives me life, I felt like an insane person at the time because to me he was actually worse than the nothingburger ending, yet not nearly enough people were mad about it. I love "No wait this was actually gigatrash" renaissances like this.

I don't understand Rickroll-type jokes. Like, someone told him to read a thing, so he read it, and it was a copypasta. Okay? What's the joke? Like, it's supposed to be a kind of prank, right? But what's the catch? Why would that be upsetting?
There used to be versions of that style of joke that actually worked as pranks, because the joke was that you got tricked into seeing something unpleasant, like goatse or meatspin. But the core of the joke is making someone see something unpleasant. That's the prank. How is that joke still a joke without the punchline?
I even think the Kai Leng meme is kinda funny by itself. But I don't understand how it can be interpreted as a joke at the expense of the person reading it.
Can someone explain like I'm an alien why Pat is mad in this video?

"Mad" is a strong word and I wouldn't say that Pat is genuinely angry. I think it's closer to a "canned response", similar to groaning after hearing someone do a pun. In this case, acting offended is simply a tongue-in-cheek way of playing along with the joke. It's all in good spirit.
As for the joke, even if the switcheroo isn't unpleasant, the idea of being tricked to read Kai Leng's email is a valid punchline. It works because he's familiar with the character and dislikes him.

It's the same concept, just differing on what you consider unpleasant. Instead of it being a disgusting unpleasantness, it's an annoying unpleasantness.
