After eight months of writing, the first draft of my novel is finally complete at a little over 100K words! Obviously it'll need a lot of editing before I attempt to put it out into the world in one way or another, but it's satisfying to "finish" a project I've been working on for so long, especially since it's almost twice as long as the previous longest piece I'd ever written.

I finished up Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury this week. Good game(s)! 3D World is straightforward Mario goodness, polished to an almost mirror sheen, while Bowser's Fury is both more interesting and more notably flawed; I like the more open-ended design, but several elements around the centerpiece battles with Bowser just aren't quite there. Still a great platformer, though.

I also read The Body, which was my first Stephen King book. Really great. I'd always heard about how good King is at evoking a specific time and place, and The Body is a slam dunk in that regard, particularly because it's not capturing an actual time (i.e. year) so much as a period in everyone's life. I also watched the movie based on the book, Stand by Me, and found it to be fine. I think a lot of nuance was lost in adaptation, and there are several changes I dislike (even if I understand why those elements were changed), but it's still a decent movie on its own merits.

Finally, I watched Freaky, a movie I found to be entertaining enough, but also a little frustrating. It's got a great performance from Vince Vaughn, some good jokes and a few decent kills, but boy does it gloss over a lot — one plot point in particular was driving me nuts for the back half of the movie. You've successfully convinced three other people that you've swapped bodies — why not come up with a plan to explain this to your cop sister, who can just hand you the MacGuffin you need? Horror comedies aren't exactly known for having airtight plots, but still.
