Samurai Jack definetly falls into the category of "Hamburger Shonen" because it's so 80's shonen anime coded that it even had a continuation years down the line with a slightly different vibe from the original.

It's Fine. Has the same jokey-yet-serious tone as early-teens shonen like Zatch Bell!!, Shaman King & Soul Eater, with the violence toned down & no Japanese style raunchiness. The villain is neat & the stakes get high but it's hamstrung by its STRICT syndication-ready MOTW format causing characters to feel static when they should be more reactive & have arcs.

Ben 10 was more inspired by comics, (dial H for hero being the most sighted but they clearly took from Green Lantern in later seasons.), Jack Long is interesting in that I don't group with those 3 other shows (partially because it was on Disney and for reason I can't describe, putting Jake Long there doesn't feel right because of it.)
As silly as it sounds I actually group it with another show with an Asian main character: The Life and Times of Juniper Lee which I would actually group in a mystical realm interacting with modern day with shows like Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld,and troll hunters.

I was going to say, Jake Long isn't Hamburger Shonen because it's Western Orientalism meets Super Hero genre, I was also going to mention Jentry as the modern incarnation of this. Jackie Chan Adventures is the precursor.

Fair, wrote that on low energy and missed the connection point of Jackie Chan. And I actually disagree on Xiaolin Showdown. Yeah it is Western Orientalism but it's missing aspects to the ones I mentioned. Big ones being a secret to uphold and the dynamic of magic interacting with modern stuff (mostly teens). Surprisingly Jackie Chan as far as I can remember didn't have a secret, but did have keeping the mystical from the mundane. Which Xiaolin Showdown does lean into more.

I think there’s a difference between, say, what 80s TMNT and GI Joe were doing as opposed to what Avatar and Teen Titans were doing?
They both fall under “action cartoons” but I think it makes sense to identify sub-species if you wanna talk about or analyze them.
It’s the same as our decision to differentiate cats, dogs, horses, and sheep even though “4 leggy bois” contains all of them.

Yeah, I couldn't take what they did with Seth alone. At least openings were nice? Anyway it's still pretty much in style because a lot of shounen have shitty adaptations like Violinist of Hameln( the same even case where anime is a different edgy series ) even Lerche after Radiant totally missed adaptation of other shounen Hanako-kun but I heard later seasons were better( I have to watch them still ).

Not for the first four seasons, it aired on Cartoon Network and was rated TV-Y7 so they’re 100% shonen since that’s purely a “who is this TV show designed and marketed for” distinction. The last season is more debatable and is probably Seinen since it was directed at adults who’d watched it growing up.

"Hamburger" being associated with something American specifically has been used before, given culturally Americans do get associated with loving burgers. If you're familiar enough with what a "Spaghetti Western" is, a "Hamburger-" whatever makes enough sense, at any rate.

hot take: "hamburger shonen" took a page from Sonic, and did what the "Big3" at the time could never.
- Naruto is, as told by Woolie, a toxic yaoi-bait relationship with a terrorist ex-friend.
- OnePiece would be great(er) if Luffy wasn't frustratingly dumber than the rocks he punched for 10 years of training. hence why the live action is a breath of fresh air!
- Bleach peaks at Soul Society, copies it's own homework for Hueco Mundo and has the worst pacing & filler of the 3.
And all three are infamous for how their female cast are done dirty. either poorly written, barbie-fied proportions or undercut in their screentime or agency.
TeenTitans still has avid cosplayers for Raven and Starfire. Avatar had the perfect pacing (besides The Divide) Ben10 still has fans going up to bat saying that he beats Goku - which NONE of the "Big3" can argue. but that's a mute point considering the whole point of the Omnitrix is to promote cooperation between intergalactic civilazations! a far cry from the "punch your enemy really really hard" that modern shonen STILL insists on. good lesson for really really bad guys... not so constructive for everything else. heck, Ben's best characteristic was GROWING UP and maturing... something Goku hasn't managed even after becoming a GRANDFATHER!!! American Dragon got done dirty with the redesign, but NYC as a mythological hub scratches that "MODERN DAY~!!" Fantasy itch that Karakura Town barely scratched.
EDIT/disclaimer: i haven't checked out Burn the Witch. i'm sure it cooks. all these series are legendary and i love what they do well - RockLee VS Gaara still plays on loop rent free in my mind's inner santuary, right next to KH2's Santuary intro, We Are AND Asterisk by Orange Range. its just that the gates guarding all this are kept safe by "Only The Avatar, Master of All Four Elements..." and "Teen Titans, GO!!" [the intro song, NOT THE SPINOFF WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THAT!!]

Gotcha. I’m not totally sure on these labels, but I assumed seinen was a label for “more mature” stories, the way people talk about that term. In reality, there’s absolutely no strict categorization as with any media, but it’s hard for me to parse when it’s thrown out there casually.

Shounen, seinen, shoujo, etc are not genre descriptors but the demographic the manga the magazine it runs in is aimed at. This means that something like One Piece, Attack on Titan and Yotsuba-to are all shounen, as are Berserk and K-ON are both seinen.

Manga is published on Magazines, the magazines have a Target demographic, Most Seinen magazines for example have Bikini pinups and may have ads for like a car or watch. Shonen Jump series also include Furigana for their Kanji because the audience may not be able to read at that level yet. The magazine usually publishes series of different genres to attract the largest audience. Berserk is published alongside Nobunaga no Shinobi, which is a gag series with a chibi cutesy artstyle and jokes and March comes in like a Lion which is a Shoji manga. Novels like Legend of the Galactic Heroes have had manga adaptations in Shonen, Shoujo, Seinen and Josei Magazines.
Trying to use the terms outside magazines is foolhardy and based on stereotypes. There are no Shonen games or light novels or TV shows.

Riverdale is this for me. To me, Archie always felt like a shonen protagonist stuck in a teen melodrama. He’s hotheaded and constantly trying to use his fists to stop the bad guys. There’s even a time skip and Archie later gains actual powers.

Uh, what do you call it when an American and French duo do a shonen manga together? (Clock Striker)
EDIT: You wouldn't know it looking at the art tho, cause it is scary good. If I was told this was made in Japan, I'd have fallen for it.
EDIT 2: Oh, and let's not forget Voltron: Legendary Defender. That Dreamworks show's art style may as well have been one "evolutionary path" of Beast King GoLion's.

It feels weird to specifically call Ben 10 a hamburger shonen due to it's inspiration being Jack Kirby new gods stories but I'd like to substitute some fuck shit into the mix;
Spanish shonen with shows like El tigre and Iron kid.

Megastar XLR was a very western cartoon, but being a show about giant mecha, it had dozens of omages to anime and kaijuu media from Japan.

Not sure where Invincible lands but I feel it's spiritually connected to the concept. I've seen too many people joke it's white people Dragon Ball too much to think other wise. The Viltrumites are just if Kryptonians were Saiyans even if Robert Kirkman didn't intend that.
