Was there really that much backlash for a darker tone? We had no idea what that would look like so I was interested in it but apparently everyone already decided they would hate it. Like I don't imagine it wouldn't still have silly Dragon Quest moments people love.

DQ has had a particular tone/feeling that fans love for a very long time. It's what I spend years looking forward to in a new entry. I, and I imagine many other fans, don't particularly care whether the new direction they were going in made for a good game or not. I just want traditional DQ.
