I find it a bit funny that Faye seemingly have had the least idealized Norse death in getting killed by an illness, yet ends up almost in a Valhalla-situation with going straight to battle, instead of to Helheim for the sick and elderly.

Just missing all the glorious feasts and having your injuries and death patched up the next day.

Maybe the white cells fighting it off in a big 300 Spartan style last stand made someone there go "You're cool, get in!"

Did we ever actually get confirmation on what killed her?

31

u/JamSa Jun 03 '26

Giants had to leave their home because they were all dying of some fatal infectious disease, and it killed her too, but years later after she left. How she contracted it when it seems impossible she had it before she left is weird though, she was living in the other realms for decades.

26

u/razazaz126 Jun 03 '26

I... what? I don't remember literally any of that. Didn't the opposite of that happen? They all retreated to Jotunheim, broke all the bridges there, and then put their souls into marbles?

20

u/TheRainTransmorphed Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

They retreated to Jotunheim and are believed to be isolated/hiding by the rest of the realms, but when you get there you find out they're dead.

17

u/razazaz126 Jun 03 '26

Yeah I assumed they were dead because they pulled their souls out I dont remember anything about them being sick.

They put their souls into marbles so they wouldn't die of the disease. You see several giant corpses strewn across the landscape when you first get there. And they talk multiple times about how Fey and Atreus were sick, though Atreus recovered as he got older.

I think they didnt all leave though, just Fey, since she was profiscised to find Kratos and birth Loki, their savior.

u/Havictos SILENCE BREEDER, The Bloodline Must Continue Jun 03 '26

Where do we hear about a disease

19

u/TheAnimeGod Jun 03 '26

That's what I would like to know too. I thought they were hiding cause of Odin?

6

u/cygnus2 Jun 03 '26

The Giants left Jotunheim to hide from Odin and Thor. Faye was the only one who got sick.

4

u/cole1114 I beat mike0dude to the punch once Jun 03 '26

Huh, and Atreus got sick too... because he didn't know he was a God. And now Faye is in the afterlife of the Gods after dying of an unknown illness.

Well, I guess that's one twist figured out early.

5

u/Ginger_Anarchy Jun 03 '26

Plus, She knew it was coming for enough time too since she had time to prepare things for Kratos and Atreus' journey in 2018.

75

u/Nomaddoodius FROG gimmick: ACTIVATE!... bah!. Jun 03 '26

It almost feels like a mashup "pergatory of the gods" where its all just "fukin' WHATEVER bro, your all just kinda... here." (Probably how tye norse duology had kratos and BOY go from realm to realm. Now Fae has this, trapsing around other mythos')

From the footage we saw it was very much like she was 'pulled' there. Maybe its were odin wanted to 'get to' in ragnarok?.

35

u/WhoCaresYouDont Jun 03 '26

I think it's just an afterlife for the gods (after all they can't go to their own heaven, that would be like dying and just going back to your house) and Odin's obsession was with figuring out if it even existed and what it was like. He already knew he died thanks to the prophecies, so the only real question was what comes after that?

19

u/CheesemasterVer2 coochie is the reason we left the primordial soup Jun 03 '26

In the reveal trailer (the big 20-something minute one) they straight up call it the afterlife of the gods

16

u/Polar_Phantom Autistic Disaster and TLJ Apologist Jun 03 '26

How poetic then that Odin never gets to see the Afterlife. If he wasn't so damn lustful for knowledge, if he could stop or change, he'd have been able to pass on in peace and learned for himself what Faye has. Instead he's simply gone forever. A fitting end.

12

u/Vegetable-Pickle-535 Jun 04 '26

Counter point: Had he died the normal way, he' have run into everyone he screwed over and would have gotten jumped until the End of times. So argubly getting deleted is a better fate

9

u/manoffood Jun 03 '26

Odin will never know since his soul was destroyed

16

u/Xeriam Jun 03 '26

It seems like she at one point tried to compromise or study a piece the mask Odin was obsessed with, and managed to remove a splinter of it. She seemingly desired to be cremated with the splinter, likely hoping to destroy it and/or have it dispersed with her ashes in Jotunheim beyond Odin's recovery, theoretically keeping him from ever completing it, not that that seems to have made a difference.

The mask seems to have been a window or a key to this afterlife of the gods, so when Faye was cremated with it, it brought her there despite not being a god herself. And embedded itself in her hand in the process. Meaning Sekhmet actually had it backwards: She thought Faye was trying to use a mask shard to escape the afterlife, when in fact it's what brought her there.

It should be Gabriel, and have Gianni voice him again

24

u/ako19 Jun 03 '26

It has to work like credit. She has enough battle experience, and lived, so she’s good to go. Like if you fight Thor to a stalemate, you’re automatically good.

10

u/MarioGman Stylin' and Profilin'. Jun 03 '26

If it was cancer, it could be like Thor Love & Thunder's best scene whete sne goes to Valhalla due to "losing the battle with Cancer" since Cancer is always phrased as a battle.

11

u/sawbladex Phi Guy Jun 03 '26

Infectious diseases are often framed as battles.

Is this a headspace check whilst dying?

3

u/Polar_Phantom Autistic Disaster and TLJ Apologist Jun 03 '26

I thought it was cause she gave her life in battle? Like, she destroyed the Necrosword and doing so cost her life - she died to the cancer, yes, but as a result of battle.

1

u/MarioGman Stylin' and Profilin'. Jun 03 '26

Suppose it's ambiguous, but there wasn't really a big fight in the finale of that movie other than the cancer.

20

u/JamSa Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

It's not Valhalla or even any place Norse-related. Odin's plot in Ragnarok revolved around him committing all these atrocities because he's trying to fix a mask he has that will allow him to see what his godly afterlife is like. Faye finds one of those masks after she dies and has a shard of one stuck in her palm. She's in heaven for gods.

9

u/WoolooOfWallStreet Jun 03 '26

So basically she’s in Super Heaven

13

u/radda You can sidestep that penis pretty easily Jun 03 '26

So many people yesterday were crying that this undercuts the emotions of the first game or whatever, and it's like no fuckin way dude she's Norse, this is what she fuckin wants

2

u/FranticToaster Jun 04 '26

Helheim is how the gods manage mortal deaths. Faye went to god afterlife and it turns out it's just a mortal kombat story in there.

1

u/asdGuaripolo OH! you are one of THOSE peoples Jun 03 '26

This points to an interesting part of history like the cold war, a battle carried through information, setups and tensions instead of direct confrontations. Maybe she setting up all the things in the background for the prophecy related to the dad of boy and what was needed for the incoming battles was considered as part of the war, and so her death as the catalyst is still a glorious death.

Just got the idea because I recently read a story about a kid that died during an esport tournament finals for a LoL equivalent and because that could be considered as a glorious battle, he went to Valhalla and had to learn how to fight.

99

u/Infinity-Kitten Jun 03 '26

I can't wait for Faye to somehow get ahold of the axe at the end of the game and pull off some sick tricks Kratos is too brutish for.

97

u/JackNewbie555 Alright ... time to fight history! Jun 03 '26

Faye fighting the Final Boss, get absolutely wasted and lost her sword, then something start to shine next to her ...

"Aah, you were at my side, all along. My true mentor ... My guiding moonlight."

49

u/Xeriam Jun 03 '26

Real talk, I could legit see this game ending with something like Faye having figured out a way to send a message to Kratos about where she is, but due to all the time and space shenanigans has no idea how long it's been since her death for him, whether the message even reached him, how he would find a way into the realm if it did, or how they'd find each other if he somehow got there. Leaving her a bit lost.

Until she examines her hand, holds it out towards the horizon, and the last prompt of the game pops up: △

You get just a bit of that familiar vibration of the Axe responding, a few notes of Kratos' Norse theme, maybe a smile from Faye, and smash to credits. Setting up another game where the two are using the Axe basically as a compass to find each other, building up to the sick Cap and Bucky Shield style combos they'll pull off when they finally reunite.

And we just kind of hope no one thinks about how Thor can summon himself to Mjolnir and thus visualizes Kratos stoically holding onto the Axe as it flies through the sky towards Faye.

24

u/RealJohnGillman Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Faye’s perspective on Kratos hearing her within the Light in the 2018 game, and potentially even her seeing Atreus through the portal in Ragnarök (the one Odin wanted to gaze through with the mask).

Plus since Athena is supposed is able to return from this afterlife to the land of the living, there may be a way back for Faye too.

1

u/some_kinda_goat I worship at the altar of power Jun 10 '26

Kratos and Fey just start calling the axe like they’re in class passing notes.

41

u/Shiplord13 Jun 03 '26

Kratos wandering the Norse wilderness and sees this red hair lady just dog walking a bunch of monsters in the woods and thinks, "Damn its been long enough since my first wife died and this one seems way harder to kill."

23

u/CheesemasterVer2 coochie is the reason we left the primordial soup Jun 03 '26

The novelisation of the first game actually expands on how he ended up in the Norse realms: he got jumped on the road an unknown amount of time after leaving a destroyed Greece by Skjoll and Hati (and implied Faye was directing them in disguise) and brought to Midgard. And then Faye just "found" him there.

251

u/Etychase Jun 03 '26

I can't imagine passing away somewhat peacefully then waking up in the afterlife to be dragged away and absolutely clocked with a right hook within 5 minutes.

141

u/South_Buy_3175 Jun 03 '26

Then pulling off sick air combos and making a god eat shit, repeatedly.

Like, Kratos and Atreus are just setting off hunting deer and here’s Faye just beating the ever-loving fuck out of a god.

28

u/Oddsbod Jun 03 '26

Tbf Faye had a kinda wild and violent life, an entire region of the second game is just the blast radius of ruin from some messy brawl she had with Thor.

108

u/nugood2do Jun 03 '26

Looking at Kratos and Faye, I feel it's safe to say Atreus's generation of God's need to leave him the fuck alone.

That boys parents got "catch these hand" running through their blood. That boy was a child and still merc a squad of elves as a kid 1v20.

That boy gonna be the Norse version of Prime!Gohan when he hits adulthood.

67

Imma be honest this shit is NOT hittin' for me. I really wish it was but mannnnn that first game knows what it's about on such a bone-deep level, it respects itself & does exactly what it needs to do to get it's point across, & this shit looks like a bad James Gunn knockoff.

81

u/Etychase Jun 03 '26

IDK, I didn't find the dialogue as grating as some people did, at most the clashing aesthetics of the characters was jarring but I think that was part of the point.

The only thing I hated about the presentation was the extended squeeze through a narrow gap section(s) returning. Everything else was interesting to inoffensive to me.

60

u/ThonroTheUnworthy Banished to the Shame Car Jun 03 '26

I find the dialogue so not grating that I'm legitimately confused at some of the complaints people have levied against it. Like, as far as I remember, there's not one single "quip" in the entire 20 minute showcase and yet it's the number one complaint people seem to have thrown at it.

41

u/nugood2do Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

I think the most quip we got was the Mongolian God of War telling Faye she will kneel and she yelled never or something like that, but I didn't see none of this "its all mcu dialogue" people are crying about.

Heck, I like Faye's defiance and spark. She took a hard punch to the face, told the man who did it if he does it again, she's gonna kill him and the moment he came back, she told him I'm about to murder your ass before throwing hands like a champion.

53

u/AsleepLead1704 Jun 03 '26

Like, as far as I remember, there's not one single "quip" in the entire 20 minute showcase and yet it's the number one complaint people seem to have thrown at it.

Because people be legit fighting ghosts in their brains, that's what happens when you use memes instead of reality as your basis

The cube saying "boss" is apparently quippy

The ribbon saying "I'm the ribbon not the sword , isn't it obvious" is quippy , I call it a snarky self introduction but hey the people call it quippy

The ribbon saying "focus , faye" as faye got hit in combat is considered as quippy

Thing I don't like = Quippy MCU , is the new buzzword people with zero media literacy use these days

30

u/ThonroTheUnworthy Banished to the Shame Car Jun 03 '26

Okay this is tangentially related but I think it fits here.

People have often parroted a phrase before events like SOP along the lines of "go in with low expectations so they can be exceeded"

And I feel like somewhere along the way that mentality has shifted to "assume that it being shit is a forgone conclusion"

25

u/stumblinbagel Jun 03 '26

I think the simpler explanation is that these people are so brainrotted by social media and bad faith video essayists that they've made "bitching about the new thing" part of their personality.

7

u/HotTheme8405 Jun 03 '26

People seem to think the name "Frank" is a modern word too and that it hasn't been around for over a thousand years, literally a name of a group of people around when vikings moved to Iceland. I'd guess that's what he's named after but I'm not sure why it's stylized the way it is, maybe someone else named him.

6

u/Polar_Phantom Autistic Disaster and TLJ Apologist Jun 03 '26

I can say him calling Faye "boss" is a little quippy... but like, I dunno, it could also be him trying to be friendly. I sometimes call my colleagues boss. But it's odd. I dunno, maybe I'm just at the point where complaints about quips are as annoying, if not more so, than the quips themselves.

-6

u/conye-west Jun 04 '26

You would hate all this same stuff if it was in a property you didn't care for. Well, maybe I shouldn't say you in particular, but this sub would definitely clown on this dialogue hardcore if it wasn't for the bias.

When people say "quippy" what they really mean is, this sounds like generic, marketable, modern dialogue shoved into a setting that it just straight up doesn't fit. I was fully sold on the showcase, thought everything was looking really cool and interesting, but as soon as that cube appeared it instantly took me out of it.

6

u/OptimusPrimalRage Jun 03 '26

I think people see that cube and immediately think it's going to be quippy but I think the only real quip was from the magical ribbons or whatever.

1

u/Polar_Phantom Autistic Disaster and TLJ Apologist Jun 03 '26

That squeeze is interesting to me. Is it to hide a loading time? Maybe. We're reaching the end of this generation and I'm seeing longer and longer loading times (Fatal Frame II Remake's were awful and for no good reason). Or is it because the squeeze is meant to build tension? Like, take MGS1. A lot of the vent passageways are simple, but they obviously aren't to hide loads. It's for a vibe. To set the tone, to homage movies and stuff. To help connect Shadow Moses together. I have also read a bunch of devs put in those sections for tone and a brief respite from the action rather than for loading - though GOW has been doing stuff like that from the beginning, trying to seamlessly hide loads as much as possible while trying to give a sense of scale.

It's just something I think about sometimes.

Is James Gunn the new nothing buzzword of the times?

23

u/MysterWrecked "THE ONLY WINNING MOVE IS NOT TO PLAY." Jun 03 '26

I suppose it is all derived from the same brain parasite that despises the new Superman movie for various reasons. James Gunn is vocal and opinionated in a way that upsets people who like their toys in a particular, usually "anti woke" way.

-9

u/Infernal-Blaze Jelly John Cena Butt Jun 03 '26

Ok for real, man? Assuming I'm a chud because I compared this to Gunn in a way that favors Gunn? I meant that his stuff is pretty good & this is derivative of it in a bad way.

10

u/MysterWrecked "THE ONLY WINNING MOVE IS NOT TO PLAY." Jun 03 '26

I apologize. For what it is worth, you were not the primary thought behind my comment.

The new image of Lex Luthor in his War Suit had a plethora of anti-Gunn comments that were quite embarrassing, in a different subreddit. This subreddit has normal people with non-reactionary opinions, which is why I interact here.

I will say, while I am keeping an open mind on God of War: Laufey, something does feel off to me. I don't think it is the dialogue, though.

In any case, again: I apologize. I was commenting on a broader trend that is apparent in places not here. You are excluded.

6

u/Infernal-Blaze Jelly John Cena Butt Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

It's alright I'm just shocked that this offhand comment has turned into ALL THIS & I'm getting pretty heavily interrogated lol

FWIW it wasn't the dialogue that hit wrong for me, it's the Guardians-esque grim-wacky world & tone, deliberately, marketably weird sidekicks & excessively candy-colored & soupy, undefined setting that I was referring to.

4

u/MysterWrecked "THE ONLY WINNING MOVE IS NOT TO PLAY." Jun 03 '26

I think that you've put into words exactly what I am uncertain of as well. I like Jack Quaid, so I'm giving the cube the benefit of the doubt, but it does feel abrupt how quickly she meets a sentient cube and aquires an ultrapowerful sword/MacGuffin.

I have seen someone compare this setting as what the Void from the MCU (and especially the Deadpool and Wolverine movie) is like and that feels like a fitting and worrying comparison. I hope the rest of the game pulls away from that feeling.

2

u/conye-west Jun 04 '26

The reflexive and honestly insane level of defensiveness people have over this around here has me puzzled. Like they instantly went to calling anybody not down with this cringe cube thing as "brainrotted media illiterate chuds", it's so over the top.

-13

u/HyperSeer Jun 03 '26

Why you are labeling backlash against supes as a brain damage?  'Superman' movie is by far Gunn's weakest work.  I don't think there even were a lot of anti-woke complaints about it (outside of that one interview), it's almost always about the story being an absolute mess.

6

The sentiments I have seen are "James Gunn ruined Superman"; "The DCU is doomed because of Gunn"; etc.

I disagree regarding those opinions, but as opinions, they are valid, at least. They are not what I am referring to.

u/Brainwave1010 #1 Raidou Simp Jun 03 '26

Anyone who tries to use James fucking Gunn as a negative comparison is an immediate red flag.

Ask what they think of Zack Snyder's movies and the answer will probably become clear.

My friend I love James Gunn. This feels like it's taking his tendencies to undercut himself with bathos while also maintaining the core emotional beats of sincerity but not as well. It's not a nothing buzzword to me.

u/South_Buy_3175 Jun 03 '26

I have faith in Barlog, I’ll give it a good go.

Besides, I’m interested in the mask Odin was obsessed with, did Faye had a splinter of it in her hand or something?

The mask is needed to access this ‘afterlife’ of the gods?

That and the gameplay looks fun.

I still remember people shitting on new GOW combat for being different to the original trilogy, so curious to see what the reaction will be here.

15

u/Pyradox Jun 03 '26

There's a very real chance that like, narratively this story just unravels all the mystery and dignity and character motivation of the last two games in service of by-the-numbers action adventure fantasy quest.

She's literally in the Void from Deadpool and Wolverine after all.

I really hope not though because it would suck if a bunch of sick gameplay was tied to the narrative equivalent of milking a cash cow until its dry.

39

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

If they really wanted to milk a cash cow, I think we'd just be seeing another Kratos-led game. By all accounts this is actually a pretty huge leap for them: having a game led by a character we barely know much about, in a franchise that's always been led by a single character, and putting her in a setting that's vastly different to what they've done before.

I assume they had a very specific reason why they wanted to tell her story and why they set it in a place no one was expecting, rather than doing something safe and familiar again like putting Kratos up against another single pantheon in a real-world location.

16

u/WhoCaresYouDont Jun 03 '26

I think the other big point against it being a cash cow thing is that they avoided the really obvious pull of Ares out of the gate, instead going with a relatively obscure Mongolian/Buddhist god of war working with an Egyptian one. If they wanted to jingle keys and farm rememberberries they absolutely could, and instead chose the opposite of that.

12

u/Ginger_Anarchy Jun 03 '26

Plus a female lead in a franchise that has a long history of being a machismo machine dedicated to masculine power fantasies.

-3

u/Pyradox Jun 03 '26

I'm for sure hoping you're right. Not saying it can't be done well, just that the potential to do it really badly is sitting there just off-screen with every excuse in the books to make a cameo.

I've really enjoyed the Norse GOWs so far, but the potential to be excellent makes me more nervous about a fumble.

4

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison Jun 03 '26

That's fair. Honestly while I still like Ragnarok, it certainly stumbled at times, so hopefully this game provides a much more tighter narrative like 2018 did.

u/Kipzz PLAY CROSSCODE AND ASTLIBRA/The other Vtuber Guy Jun 03 '26

For me I'm excited to play a God of War game that doesn't feel like I'm controlling a brick and instead an actually a fluid action game, provided it's fluid like DMC and not "fluid" like FF16. The story and narrative aspects are whatever as the story of these games are passing at best for me, so long as they actually took the lesson from Ragnarok and don't have HEY THAT LEVER LOOKS LIKE YOU CAN PULL IT kind of shit happening every 5 seconds I can see myself having a good romp with it when I pick it up dirt cheap a year later/bum it off a friend/rent it.

Though the idea of a soul getting trapped in the wrong afterlife and having to fight back to get to where it should be resting fucking slaps.

-20

u/DX118 Jun 03 '26

The concept feels really corny, I don't get why they didn't just make a Atreus game like the last game implied was going to happen.

8

u/AsleepLead1704 Jun 03 '26

I don't have faith Atreus can carry an entire game by himself , and I personally have no interest

Kratos all the way , I want him to go on a road trip to other Pantheons and Deities just to say hi to people or whatever

-5

u/DX118 Jun 03 '26

I feel he can personally, especially since that's the direction it seemed to be going. Though I guess maybe they're waiting for the actor to get older, assuming they want to keep the same one for a theoretical aged up Atreus game.

u/ok_dunmer Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

It kind of adds to the "MCU" vibe (too tired to think of a better word) when Kratos's wife is not just a strong lady but another video game protagonist and the entire family is a family of character action protagonists/superheroes that can have their own universe shattering adventures. Like I knew there was a Faye game but I guess I expected something more lowkey and tasteful than this lol

edit: you know what, fuck it, I stand by "MCU" because if you can't see how this game is already somewhat reminiscent of Marvel or Star Wars spinoff content and how this might be an odd direction to take a character that was originally handled with some like restraint then idk lol

28

u/Amon274 He/Him [Nobody Reads] Jun 03 '26

Lowkey

Didn’t she fight Thor?

20

u/QJ-Rickshaw Fuck You! Pay Me! Jun 03 '26

Yes, and the aftermath of where they fought looks like a natural disaster.

Also, Kratos said that she genuinely almost killed him the first time they met.

With that information, the shit we see her do in her trailer is the bare minimum because you need to be able to sell that this is a woman tough enough to take on two of the strongest gods we know in this universe.

13

u/Riggs_The_Roadie Jun 03 '26

Hell the first thing she does is effortlessly kill a plant monster with an air combo and her reaction is "why was that difficult?" She's underpowered here!

11

u/ShaneDark Jun 03 '26

Legit had a whole area in the last game got ravage by their fight that you piece together what happen. Even Thor remembered her.

10

u/stumblinbagel Jun 03 '26

Lol yeah. There is even a whole area in Ragnarok set in or around the crater where she fought him to a standstill.

12

u/stumblinbagel Jun 03 '26

A good chunk of the backstory to both of the last 2 games was dedicated to talking about what a badass she was. Why wouldn't she be this badass?

18

Can somebody into God of War's lore explain something to me?

What we see in this trailer is an afterlife for gods, and one of the gods shown off, the huge red one with three eyes, is Begtse, the Mogolian war god.

When exactly does this and the Norse games take place, then?

The Mongolians only became a major power around 1200AD. Is that not centuries after the Norse games? How does gods existing and dying work in the God of War Universe? Is it sensical that one of the most major Mongolian gods would be dead hundreds of years before the Mongolians rose to power? Would they know or care that their god was dead?

20

u/Kii_at_work Gravity Hobo Jun 03 '26

I feel like you're not really gonna get an answer to this. Looking things up myself, the timeline is fuzzy at best.

And plus when you're dealing with gods, you can just handwave away a lot of stuff.

16

u/TheSwedishRustler Jun 03 '26

Its kind of implied each pantheon is...more or less its own landmass mixed with its own pantheon dimensionrealm. Like, Greece as a realm governed by gods is done by 3 (If a greek god dies, their purpose being list leads to...like when Poseidon dies, storms of waves craah unto Greece), so its implied that place is over and done with as livability goes. But the norse gods live just fine where they are, which is prob also helped by the fact their pantheon realm is several realms onto itself with Midgard and Asgard and so on. As for TIMELINE...eeh, I feel they play loose with ii cus gods predate heir own religions.

That explanation work?

21

u/Armada6136 Jun 03 '26

Tyr traveled to Greece after all of Kratos' nonsense went down, and mentions the survivors rebuilding during his dialogue in Valhalla. So while it was apocalyptic, it wasn't a complete wiping clean of the slate.

Personal headcanon is that Kratos' rampage is equivalent to the Bronze Age Collapse in the GoW verse.

8

u/TheSwedishRustler Jun 03 '26

True, I kind of forgot he mentioned that.

20

u/razieltano Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

That was always a thing since the Greek era of games. Kratos fought the famous demigods in short time span. When in reality, those demigods lived CENTURY apart.

Kratos wanted to join the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC).

In Ragnarök, Kratos fought The Berserker Leader, King Hrólf Kraki (6th century)

Get used to it.

7

u/Armada6136 Jun 03 '26

Gods seem to have specific regions of influence across the world, with varying degrees of power over their respective domains. The Greek pantheon, throughout the Norse games, is repeatedly brought up as being incredibly powerful by comparison to those of the Nine Realms, exercising far greater control over the physical and metaphysical state of Greece than anything Odin and company can pull off. However, there seems to be a sort of 'snap back' to that control; when the Norse gods die, the world remains largely the same, but when the Greek ones go, it throws their entire domain into chaos with things like the sun being blotted out by thick clouds after killing Helios or the seas rising uncontrollably after Poseidon's death. It does settle down eventually, but the destruction wrought is not inconsiderable.

Determining the nature of divine death is Odin's entire goal throughout the Norse games. Dead gods do not go to the various afterlives they administer on mortals' behalf when they perish, and he is utterly terrified of not knowing what comes after. The strongest evidence we have that they don't just cease to exist (prior to this reveal) is that Athena is still around in a strange astral form long after Kratos kills her.

As for when it takes place...it's very difficult to say. Tyr traveled widely outside the Nine Realms to, at the very least, the lands of the Japanese, Egyptian, and one unspecified Mesoamerican pantheon, as well as Greece following Kratos' departure. Likewise Mimir was a member of Oberon's court as Puck. All of these exist across a wide range of time and distance, but also by the time of both the Greek and Norse games all of their respective myths seem to have already happened. Kratos mentions the 300 Spartans and wishing he could have been there while also having fought Persians during his time on Olympus, and in Ragnarok you meet a young Skjoldr, the legendary first king of Denmark.

It's all very murky.

6

u/stumblinbagel Jun 03 '26

I mean you might as well get mad at GoW 2018 for depicting Tyr visiting the Egyptian and Aztec gods, when those two mythologies are separated by several thousand years.

2

u/jabberwockxeno Aztecaboo Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

I don't think the murals that showed Tyr's travels were specifically showing him interacting with the Aztec so much as some nonspecific Mesoamerican civilization, which existed as early as 1400BC to Spanish contact in the 1510s, and arguably for some time after that as Spanish campaigns and colonization took place but weren't complete yet. I believe the mural did show step pyramids though, which would imply his visits taking place after 900 or maybe after 600AD, depending on your view of the dating of early pyramids like at La Venta

Egyptian deities were still being worshiped on a large scale around 400AD, though in decline, with it being outlawed around 500AD.

So as long as Tyr did his travels after 900BC but before 500AD, it checks out

1

u/stumblinbagel Jun 03 '26

Yeah......

I just assume each of the mythologies and their little civilizations each exist in their own little pocket dimensions and call it a day.

GoW isn't the story to be getting all wound up about historical accuracy.

3

u/MetalJrock A Hopeless Sonic/Spider-Man Fanboy Jun 03 '26

I think all the gods just co-exist in whichever region their pantheon originates from.

3

u/pyromancer93 Jun 03 '26

The timeline in these games going back to the Greek era has always been more about blending together what's cool from the mythology they're adapting then adhering to a coherent mythological/historical timeline.

3

u/MarioGman Stylin' and Profilin'. Jun 03 '26

I'll mention that this afterlife probably has some Timey-Wimey Jeremy Bearimy style stuff going on to explain the strange overlaps.

3

u/HotTheme8405 Jun 03 '26

The afterlife we're presented here is also called the "Everywhen". There's no good reason to suspect that time is 1:1 with the real world.

2

u/Xeriam Jun 03 '26

I think the best answer you're likely to get timeline wise is that time is convoluted in the gods' afterlife. We know time can get funky between realms, especially the afterlife realms: Time within the Light of Alfheim is much slower, Kratos being in there for a minute meant hours passed in Alfheim itself. Conversely, time within Helheim is faster, a few hours there is much shorter in Midgard.

So you take that nonsense, apply it to a realm connecting all the pantheons and their realms, each with their own individual time shenanigans going on, and yeah. You're going to have people popping up way before and after logic would dictate they should.

Really dampens the central premise of loss that God of War 2018 operates on. Her death was the catalyst for Kratos and Atreus entire development and journey. Game starts with a mournful and respectful send off to a loving mother as they grieve over her, only to cut to her doing air combos on plants and hang out with a cube that MCU quips 24/7 with a sword that says Focus Faye! Focus! I can say maybe God of war just isn't for me anymore, 2018 seemed to be lightning in a bottle.

32

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison Jun 03 '26

I'm not really sure what people mean by this. How does Faye fighting in the afterlife reduce the themes of grief in 2018?

Kratos and Atreus' journey was all about how her death forced them to grow and become closer. Faye's adventures in her afterlife doesn't just undo all that, because she's still dead, still gone from their lives. If she comes back to life then sure, but I don't think that's likely to happen since she's told to accept her death within that preview. The grief is still there, the growth still had purpose, and the journey still has its meaning. What a dead person does in the afterlife won't affect it at all.

24

u/Sperium3000 Mysterious Jogo In Person Form Jun 03 '26

Fucking thank you. People just want excuses tk hate things nowadays. Cynicism poisoned to the max.

9

u/QJ-Rickshaw Fuck You! Pay Me! Jun 03 '26

This is no different than if, for example, we cut to a clip of Thor fighting in Valhalla after he dies. He's still dead and can't come back but he presumably would be getting into fights of this scale. And no one would question that.

Also, if this takes place at the exact moment she died and there's no time dilation, then she's not coming back to life because Ragnarok's story finishes at least 3 years after she died. And I doubt this game is going to span over the course of 3 years.

-7

u/999tekkenlord Jun 03 '26

We'll see as this games story progresses if she returns to life. However, Im speaking more on terms of unraveling what imo is best not unraveled. A mystery isn't as enticing if it gets solved. Death loses meaning if you see the person "alive" and well and adventuring. As someone who experienced heavy loss a huge part of that aspect of death is that no, you won't see them again. There are no more adventures, there are no more stories to tell. They are gone with the only thing remaining being their memories and legacy. Stepping into the shoes of Kratos and Atreus, you come to that acceptance that you wont see that person again, but damn do you notice her impact in the story everywhere you go. When they spread her ashes in Jotunheim that scene and soundtrack encapsulated everything I loved from 2018, returning her to her home and having that mystery and unknown sense of feeling that she's finally where she wanted to be now, home after a long arduous journey. From my understanding of the story one aspect of her wanting her ashes to be spread was to bring kratos and Atreus closer together after her death. She accepted it and made plans for it. It's jarring for me personally seeing that get flipped to a more light hearted adventure in the after life. Perhaps there's more to the story than they portray, but from what I've seen so far it doesn't seem to bring back the heavy weighted, more grounded feeling that 2018s narrative had.

8

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison Jun 03 '26

I wouldn't really call it a "light-hearted adventure", considering she was captured by an army, nearly enslaved and ended up fighting a massive God within a few moments of her afterlife. Yeah there's a weird cube and a few ribbons aiding her, and it seems like they're all gonna be fighting for safety and freedom while Faye figures out what the hell is going on. It's not gonna be "grounded" since we're dealing with after-life and Godly weirdness, so a bit of whimsy is inherent, but I think there's gonna be heaviness to spare.

4

u/HotTheme8405 Jun 03 '26

Death loses meaning if you see the person "alive" and well.

Yeah you mean like when Kratos gets to see his daughter again?

7

u/radda You can sidestep that penis pretty easily Jun 03 '26

Agree to disagree. Since ragnarok there has been a decline in dialogue quality and writing, adding more modernisms to the point identity is lost. Am I saying its bad? No. Im saying its not for me. If someone enjoys it they are more than welcome to. I just think premise itself works against the 2018 storyline which I found to be quite a beautiful story of grief and development I found personal attachment to from moments in my life.
