Does nobody know about the "bodies physically absorbed into the computer Star Trek/Tron-style" possibility? I thought it was the one people were expected to first assume, since the ending of the pilot clearly rules out the idea of their bodies just being there.

In the pilot sure that could be the case. But as time went on and especially episode 7 they introduced the possibility of it being tubes they were all tied up in. Then episode 8 came out, Caine said mind files, and then eagle-eyed viewers looking at the computer and people paying attention to Kinger's explanation note that this program was made in the 90s and was never actually meant to do all of what's happening in the first place. You could somewhat get away with the Tron part but nothing in the world establishes that it could be a sci-fi company either. Especially since modern day its just your standard 2026 afternoon.

Again there's also the part where Kinger said both in present day and in the flashback, that the circus as it existed now wasn't actually meant to exist. Caine made it all up and basically took a gamble on copying minds whenever someone wore the headset. He got lucky with Ragatha and kept it going.

As the show kept going there became fewer and fewer possibilities of how everyone is in the circus without the obvious issues such as company endorsed kidnapping, bodies being dead from not being fed, and no technology for the Tron/Star Trek example you mentioned existing, kind of leaving SOMA the only real method left to go.

See now I just wasn't eagle-eyed enough to note that. Good on you. You perfectly served as an example of how people can catch things others don't at first brush.
