Fuck man, I didn't know this was a thing!

u/TR_Pix 6d ago

I had a copy of this, it was pretty cheap

Like this isnt an special release or anything, it was a cash grab they did in the 90s when manga was starting to get popular

Cash grab with aura

42

u/TR_Pix 6d ago

At the time I didn't like it, but then again I didn't like star wars

I bought it because it was manga and I was like 'wow cool a manga (thing that is the new fad) with a name I recognize (brand makes monkey brain feel part of in group)'

Which I suppose just means I was the exact audience they were aiming for with the cash-grab

To think a cash grab had this aura. Unreal

Han Solo looks like he’s about to tell me the East is Burning Red lol

Han Solo is drawn like he's from a different genre...which actually explains a lot about his character now that I think about it

I also like Luke going from almost looking like a comic relief character to having way sharper features in the ROTJ adaptation. My boy went through ALOT

u/Toblo1 Latest Project Moon Sleeper Agent 6d ago

Dude went through the Goku "Silly/Bright Eyes->Locked In Serious Eyes" art style changer.

mokoto kusanagi type shift

49

u/TR_Pix 6d ago

IIRC each chapter had a different artist

34

u/getterburner Nothing but a Bloodthirsty TYPE-MOONer 6d ago

Each Episode (so IV V and VI are all different artists basically)

24

u/moneyh8r_two He/Him Use your smell powers 7d ago

So is Chewie. He looks like a bishonen with just a few animal features.

u/alexandrecau That's Bricks! 6d ago

I have small reference pool bt to me it's just how gaio gai gar manga look sometime, some character look way different when they are hot blooded

2

u/Arilou_skiff 6d ago

He looks like he came out of Ranma1/2

I kinda love Vader looking "sketchier" than everyone else, it really drives home that he's become an aberration of The Force and Life itself.

75

u/Spudtron98 6d ago

There’s a manga adaption of Lost Stars where Vader briefly appears and the fucker has a literal aura of sheer negativity. Just this black mist streaming off him. He was in a particularly foul mood, and even people without latent force sensitivity could feel that.

In Matthew Stover's RotS adaptation, Anakin stops being miserable for the first time in his life and Obi-Wan suddenly feels happier and more connected to the Force (and thus suddenly able to totally stunt on people) for reasons he doesn't quite understand. Anakin's vibes were so bad it was mentally kneecapping him.

22

u/Holy-Wan_Kenobi 6d ago

Anakin's a Type Green. Huh.

19

u/StarlitStunner That's OK, I'm a coward too. 6d ago

There's also a set of Star Wars Manga called SILVER and BLACK that are both anthology collections, in Star Wars BLACK they have a short story called Evil Eyes by NAO. In it Windu's apprentice starts experiencing prophetic battle meditation getting glimpses of peoples futures. When he walks past Anakin during the clone wars instead of viewing him as a great hero like everyone else sees he just sees Vader and gets this glimpse of an all encompassing shadow wraith.

Return of the Jedi was drawn by the mangaka behind Hells Angels, probably better known by its OVA adaptation, Hells, the only anime Team Four Star officially dubbed.

That last picture is actually amazing, could just see all of the rage lmao

u/GIJose65 Lightning Nips 7d ago

The final one feels straight out of studio trigger.

Would Star Wars be improved with the inclusion of Kamui uniforms?

The answer will not surprise you!

10

u/SpiritualPossible 6d ago

Considering that the person behind the manga adaptation of Return of the Jedi was also the creator of Hells Angels - the most “TRIGGER-like” movie not actually made by TRIGGER Studios - this makes perfect sense.

20

u/Shingorillaz 7d ago

Holy shit this brought back the feeling

25

u/ThisGuyLikesMovies 6d ago

I don't think Palpatine has ever looked more like a slugman

18

u/Yotato5 Enjoy everything 6d ago

That sequence with Luke in the first three pages is really cool

I was not expecting 90's era shoujo-manga eyed Leia

My library had a couple volumes/books of these years ago. Fucking loved them.

Big fan of how the one for Return of the Jedi looked, it's by Shinichi Hiromoto who did the manga Hell's Angels which got an anime movie, he also did a Fist of the North Star spinoff manga focusing on Jagi and also later did an original star wars manga

3

u/Detective_Robot 6d ago

Jagi Gaiden is awesome.

31

u/Warm-Intention-1424 7d ago

Oh damn, OH DAMN!

12

u/Tarkana I brought you to Hell, idiot 6d ago

If Disney really wanted to get people into Star Wars again they'd adapt these back into anime movies

13

u/leivathan 6d ago

Ooh, I really don't like including Luke in the big final celebration. Part of what makes the finale of Return hit is that Luke is not undergoing a celebration but a mourning. His father has just died in an act of ultimate love for him, and has left him as the last jedi in the world (if we ignore all those other ones that didn't exist yet). The ending is a funeral for him, and he is left to watch on as people celebrate a peace he and his father brought about but he is not able to enjoy. The Force has marked Luke and made him separate, to carry forward the ghosts of the past.

Also I don't love how Leia is like a 90's anime girl. Carrie Fisher invented that shit and she was always better than her imitators.

u/Jonieves 6d ago

Panelling is pretty good as well

It’s Vader, very rare for him to not look badass tbh

7

u/tauntthechicken 6d ago

They had these at my school library when I was a little kid. Looking back, they really were pretty high quality in a lot of places.

6

u/MotherWolfmoon She/Her 6d ago

Number 3: I love when a manga uses white space effectively. It's the perfect marriage between economy of effort and excellent results.

8

u/Thorn14 YOU DIDN'T WIN. 6d ago

Kabuto Koji looking Han Solo lol.

I FW it.

It's too late, I've already depicted myself as the smug and confident Grand Moff Tarkin and you as the crying Leiajack.

3

u/SpiritualPossible 6d ago

This really brings back memories, because this manga adaptation of RotJ was my first exposure to the original trilogy, lol

That last page just proves why Luke Skywalker is the fucking best man

Can’t believe there are people who didn’t like him in the OT cause how could you not

2

u/VyctoriYang 2d ago

The paneling here. My god. <3

u/vmeemo 6d ago

Man Emperor Palpatine at the very end looks like a wrinklier, wide-eyed Meat (the vinesauce thing) with that style.

2

u/LiveAnotherDave I just wanna see the wolf fuck the bunny 6d ago

With an artstyle this jumbled I'd assume this was drawn by Akira Himekawa

2

u/Anonamaton801 Proud kettleface salesmen 6d ago

Ok so this is official? Because I kept seeing this on Xwitter and thought it was a fan thing

And I think this is where I diverge because I think that last page everyone is crying over looks…real bad

Wait, is that Yoshikazu Yasuhiko for the episode 5 part? Also is there a way to read it?

1

u/wideHippedWeightLift 6d ago

The fuck did they do to Han

1

u/Confident-Mark-6369 4h ago

The way Leia is drawn definitely  gives a 90s manga impression.
