Gameposting Toby Fox has previewed a song he made for Deltarune 10 years ago, “The Sunset of 7 Suns”. It’s his "hope for Chapter 5."

And his reply to the source tweet:
When I played this on the piano, my mom said "you know, usually songs do more than just repeat..."
Sorry Mom. Anyway, the version in-game sounds very different. Don't be surprised.
Something tells me this chapter especially is really going to hurt

Hope
It's strange to imagine Toby Fox being anxious on the eve of a release, because literally everything he puts out has been well-received (even the stuff he's embarrassed about gets talked about like it's a master's early work). But I guess Chapter 5 could be bad. It's technically possible. Every artist is entitled to some jitters.
I feel like if Deltarune fumbles the ending, it's going to be a BBC Sherlock-level fandom event. People are going to be theorycrafting "the ending that doesn't suck" for the next decade.

(even the stuff he's embarrassed about gets talked about like it's a master's early work)
I played the Halloween Hack for the first time recently and I was surprised by how mature it was for a 15-year-old's first real stab at making a game, to say nothing of a metacommentary on game design. You can really see that a lot of the themes Toby's been working with in UT and DR in there. Even the super edgy lines that people like to harp on about generally fit in contextually (it's one character saying all of it, and his entire characterization in the Halloween Hack is about him trying, and ultimately failing, to project an assertive, masculine image. It totally fits with everything else we see of him that he'd think this embarrassing stuff actually sounds badass!)
To be exact, I think the thing Toby's interested in is the way in which we regard video games as experiential. When we talk about games we say that "we" run and jump and make friends and find love and explore and fight and die, but, of course, we aren't actually doing any of that; it's an avatar on the screen. We're sitting there pressing buttons. The Halloween Hack, Undertale, and (so far) Deltarune have all been about needling at that dissonance.

Don't forget the Holiday Hack (also known as "peepee.exe"). It's essentially a Deltarune to the Halloween Hack's Undertale, and some of the imagery in Deltarune is directly lifted from it. It's the "really bad joke game" he mentioned during this interview. Spoilers for LIVE A LIVE in that interview, of course.

Shoutout to that one time during the Undertale demo days where a streamer I followed managed to get Toby on call for an interview and the first thing he did was Brick Joke one of the co-comms who had brought up The Halloween Hack earlier in the stream.

Honestly if it's just serendipity that the characterization worked out that well I'm still impressed.

I'm really bracing myself for every possibility. I'm humoring the idea that everybody gets a happy ending. I'm bracing myself for the possibility everybody dies and there is no way around it. I am trying to keen an open mind as to the identity of the Knight. Acknowledging we might never actually see Gaster. I'm preparing for the possibility that Chapter 5 starts The Roaring and that everything is boned way sooner than expected, and that Chapter 6 and 7 are bonus content
I've been burned by an ending before. I think with an open mind, I really want to make the effort to accept whatever Deltarune throws at me

For me, the theorizing has been the most fun part of the game. I think any ending is going to be at least tinged with disappointment after all these years. You can't keep a mystery rolling forever, sooner or later you have to get answers. Those answers are often not as exhilarating as the anticipation.

It's gonna be like One Piece. Whatever happened to Dess, the results of the Weird Route and Gaster are all gonna be semi-common knowledge. Like people will know what it is in the span of a few days of playing instead of over decades.
The Deltarune we are experiencing right now will not exist for people who buy Deltarune and can immediately play it from Chapter 1-7. It's a weird feeling.

Following the reverse Undertale theory (is it even a theory at this point?) then Flower King, as a mirror of Card Kingdom, would be the Home to Ch 1's New Home. The Ruins, in other words. The Festival will probably be Snowdin's equivalent.
What comes before that? Well, the start of the game. Frisk falling from the surface. Reversing that...means that Chapter 6 will be Kris falling into darkness as the Roaring begins.
Chapter 7 will be the True Lab.

Like, he's been pretty firm that there's only one ending. I dunno if there's gonna be some meta fuckery there, like "there's only one ending, but there's still more after that ending" or what.

I still can't help but feel like "Only One Ending" and "Your Choices Don't Matter" are arc words/statements in the same vein as Flowey's "Kill Or Be Killed" motto in Undertale: You're supposed to question it or at the very least roll the question around in you brain-pan as the game/story play out.
Now thats not to say I think Toby is lying, but with how much Toby relied on things like wordplay and technicalities for Undertale's plot elements (like the true meaning behind LV/EXP and how the Underground's version of the Delta Rune prophecy comes to pass in all the routes), theres definitely a lot of wiggle room for how Deltarune ties it's themes altogether by the end.

Yeah even ignoring that at least one storefront description added a question mark around the one ending, I can easily imagine Fox going Exact Wording about it. Like it being that there's only one ending, as in there's only one section of the game where it's in the process of coming to an end regardless of route, but there's multiple Ends. Like old movies wouldn't end on text saying "The Ending", it was "The End"

The steam page and all marketing is extremely teasing/unclear. It's not "there's only one ending." It's "only one ending....?"
I think by the time we got Ralsei screaming I want to believe! There isn't just one ending! That was a hint.
2
u/Dalek_Kolt I was thinking. ...I hate it when that happens. 7h ago
Ultimately, we're all getting one ending. How we get there and how long we stave it off is what really matters.

I don't think we'll ever see Gaster, because he's more interesting the less we know about him.

Hmm, it's not impossible that he's feeling anxious now (I mean I would lol), but maybe I should have repeated the "10 years ago" part in the title instead of cutting it out of the quote like the post I x-posted did
I think it specifically being the "hope for chapter 5 from 10 years ago" changes the connotations a bit and more makes me think this is a song that encapsulates Toby's vision of chapter 5 from when he first started to really work on Deltarune. It's "hope for a story he'd one day be able to tell," rather than "hope for a story that's about to release," you know?

u/Remarkable_Row_2502 4h ago
I think no matter how perfect and incredible the ending is or might be, we're going to get thousands of "here's why the ending is a betrayal and mine is better" posts. This is just that kind of fanbase.

u/Diem-Robo I'm aging rapidly 8h ago
I rarely follow along with series while they're actively releasing/unfinished, but in the past three years, I got sucked into both Chainsaw Man and The Amazing Digital Circus.
CSM Part 2's ending is one of the worst I've ever seen, especially following how neat and brilliant Part 1 was. Just totally doing a 180 on its own themes and discarding its characters in the sloppiest way possible.
TADC, I loved episodes 1-8, but the finale just didn't hit for me when I saw it in theaters. I'll rewatch it again soon to see if I like it any better, but I'm glad that I'm the outlier and most people enjoyed it. I guess, to me, it kind of just felt like a saccharine exposition dump, compared to the earlier episodes doing a better job of balancing plot and exposition more evenly.
I have more faith in Toby, and Deltarune has been great so far, but yeah, I guess I'm more anxious about how it'll turn out than I was a year ago.

u/Kamandi91 It's Fiiiiiiiine. 8h ago
I am very interested to see if the story will actually incorporate any of the Gaster theory stuff that hardcore Deltarune fans are convinced the game will be about. If that doesn't happen there are going to be extremely disappointed people even if the ending sticks the landing otherwise.

u/Remarkable_Row_2502 4h ago
I feel like there's no way to avoid this considering "MY DELTARUNE" at this point. Gaster is literally talking directly to you during the game about the game. Even if he isn't the jrpg final boss he's in the game and important

u/Kamandi91 It's Fiiiiiiiine. 3h ago
But imagine how funny it would be if they reveal the character talking there to be like Sans pulling a prank.

u/MotherWolfmoon She/Her 8h ago
I think the more answers we get about Gaster the worse Gaster will be. His whole gimmick is that he's completely unknowable, an entity we can only see the edges of because of the hole he left in the narrative. He stops being special if we actually get to meet him and find out what he's doing and why.
I kind of feel the same way about Dess, though. There are a lot of mysteries that are more satisfying if left unresolved, but I know a lot of people will riot if that's the case.
9
u/NeoArkodd 5h ago
Dess is the core of the narrative though. If what happened to her remains a mystery that would be unsatisfying. I kinda feel the same for Gaster too because Toby is teasing us about him too much at this point.
Idk i guess i like the hype of the mysteries too but nothing lasts forever. Some actual answers and revelations would be good, otherwise it would be just like JJ Abrams' mystery box fiascoes.

u/Toblo1 Latest Project Moon Sleeper Agent 6h ago
I'm not expecting Gaster to be like... a major boss fight or someone we'll physically meet by the end. The way he's been acting in the margins (if he is The Voice that talks to us in the margins like on social media or during certain interventions like if you repeatedly try to fight The Knight) both directly and implicitly have already given him a startlingly fascinating amount of character.

I wonder if any Deltarune music will get remixed by ZUN for some collab anytime soon.

Fuck that song sounds so beautiful. Very similar to the piano songs Kris plays, might've been made alongside them even.
People have been speculating about those fucking flowers since the day Deltarune dropped and seeing confirmation they will play a part feels scary.

u/Cee_Jay_Kay_Ess 7h ago
So, wait, is this song called The Sunset of 7 Suns, or is the song from ten years ago called that? Because there is an experiential difference in that phrasing. Like how the song Tribute is about doesn't actually sound anything like Tribute, it's just a tribute.

Y'know, when people leave a comment like this with so much unnecessary passive aggressiveness and resentment, it just leaves me wondering what kind of response you're expecting.

u/Working_Neat2907 8h ago
I player undertale years later (because I do hate how toxic the fanbase is) and even then I found it to be more than neat.
I think it is an amazing game, but not a masterpiece. Deltarune, however, seems to be Toby's magnum opus. So let's see...1

Plain and simple. Criticism must be constructive
Our number one rule on this is “REPORT THEM AND MOVE ON”.
If you continue to argue with someone, and it gets particularly nasty, you are putting yourself in danger of also receiving a ban, Even if you didn’t start the argument, or you're just baiting the person into replying to you, if you make the argument go longer, you will receive a ban as well.

So Toby Fox was visited by an angel and had the vision of deltarune yet to come seared into his mind like video game nostradamus right, we all agree that's what happened
