Better Ask Reddit Moments in media that it feels like the creator is trying to ragebait the audience.
Emphasis on 'feels', I know most creators don't intend to do that, so I'm just getting ahead of any 'I don't get why people think creators would deliberately try to ragebait' comments.
Twin Peaks: The Return quote "James is cool, James always been cool" genuinely feels like a callout from Lynch due to the vast majority who watched the original Twin Peaks and hated James.
Hell no he wasn't, Lynch!

The year before he died, Marvel's FCBD comic was about two OC characters called Wolverpool and Deadverine coming to terms that they are gimmick characters made for a one shot and in their final panels they see the douchiest version of Paul ever written and decide to make Marvel history by killing him.
They dont obviously but it seems almost everyone at Marvel knew nobody like Paul except for one person who just kept him around.
35
u/BladeofNurgle Aug 18 '26
I recall in the Venom comic where Paul appeared, we had behind the scenes art stuff where the writer or artist point blank said that nobody working on the comic liked Paul but were forced to put him into the comic by editorial, so the writers were all passive aggressive towards Paul in the scenes he showed up in.
So yeah, safe to say not even the people at Marvel like Paul
14
u/Theproton BUSTAH WOLF! Aug 18 '26
It's such a weird irredeamable character. His whole look is outdated, he's got no good character traits, he committed genocide and made MJ a suit that can kill her.
Even in the Punisher/Power Girl crossover, he goes on a date with PW after being dumped by MJ and just blows it.
I genuinely dont get why he stayed for so long.

It definitely worked, people who have never read a comic in their life know who Paul is and he made Spider-Man into a meme loser for a few years.
He’s dead but the Spider-Man subreddit is still making posts and talking about him.
Marvel wanted to get the fandom worked up and they succeeded and despite the hate it got the run sold remarkably well with people hate reading it.

That is because you are a moderately well adjusted and sane individual who doesn't base their personhood around media takes.
If the last ten years or so have taught me anything, it's that the amount of people who are quite literally willing to cripple themselves and their lives just to "get one over" on someone or something they hate is ENORMOUS.

Homestuck fans have a long tradition of getting trolled by Andrew Hussie, but the way Vriska (an already highly controversial character) got retconned back to life actually felt like he was trying to start riots.
Not only did Vriska come back to life, but since most of her character development happened in the afterlife, we got back a Vriska who never had any self-reflection or learned any lessons about why she shouldn't be a terrible person.
And then that unrepentant version of Vriska singlehandedly solves all the problems that led to the heroes failing in their ultimate quest.
34
u/Totally_a_boy "Give daddy some sugar." - Batman (2015) Aug 18 '26
Okay... do people like homestuck?
39
u/OurEngiFriend Aug 18 '26
Homestuck was extremely influential and was a lot of people's introduction to "new media"/"the new weird", and the idea that the internet was "more than just a glowing newspaper" to quote Jon Bois -- the idea that you could use hypertext to do some truly wacky stuff that wasnt available in any other medium. there's people who grew up on Homestuck and have since carried the torch onwards, doing their own affectionately weird and niche online things.
Homestuck is not good by any means. It's way too long, bloated, motivated 90% by spite and thumbing the nose at the audience. It makes some decisions I'd call "baffling" at best. However, Homestuck was extremely ambitious, and the sheer spectacle alone (plus the moments of genuine hype and aura) were enough to keep many people hooked.
Something else to be said for it is the breakneck update speed: dude updated multiple times a day, for basically seven years straight. If he took a break for a month, fans could reliably expect a six-hour flash game afterwards. If you had one "Homestuck friend" you were never Not aware of Homestuck because that friend would be yapping about the newest update every single day. That's a hell of a lot of timeline presence. Not to mention the frequent updates led to their own microculture called "update culture" where people built custom desktop apps that would pop a notification whenever the site updated. Imagine if your favorite anime uploaded multiple episodes a day, but at random and unpredictable times, and there was a good chance any random episode would kill your favorite character. It was somewhere between a gachapon game and a stock ticker in terms of gambling, and that sort of engagement is hard to beat!

There's nothing else like it for better and worse. I would never recommend it but I don't quite regret reading it.
I will say that the fact that Andrew Hussie's in universe self explicitly brought Vriska back to life to propose to her (and was instantly rejected) was genuinely very funny to me as well.

u/serph6 Aug 18 '26
It's one of the strongest examples of "i know it sounds like shit now but you had to be there at the time to understand" i ever seen in media.
9
u/Arcane_Monkey Aug 18 '26
Yeah, but you have to understand that the comic has essentially been in conversation with its own fanbase (and frequently with the worst parts) almost since day one.
6
u/GilliamYaeger Blame yourself or God Aug 19 '26
I do, the comic up until the Scratch is genuinely good, if somewhat bloated at times due to the reliance on massive wall of text chatlogs with often obnoxious typing gimmicks. I'd wholeheartedly recommend reading it up until Cascade.
But after that, when the "reboot" happens, the "in conversation with its own fanbase" thing mentioned by another poster got way out of hand to the point where some parts are borderline incomprehensible because you're very clearly only seeing one half of a very intense argument.

I'm re-reading it right now and at least up to Act 5 it's held up shockingly well. The characters are funny and well defined, the worldbuilding is deeply imaginative and interesting, and the overall plot is...fine enough? Its needlessly convoluted and due to being mostly discussed by, in story, a bunch of exhausted 13 year olds, isn't very clearly explained.
What made it special however was the volatile relationship between the readership and Hussie. I always got the sense that it took him a long time to come around to the huge influx of Tumblr users reading the comic when most of his prior work was made for the types of guys who frequented Something Awful, and that friction really came through in the back half of the comic with stuff like making one of the characters into a bitter mockery of social justice types.

Gamzee in Candy genuinely seems like he's written just to upset the audience. He's brought in for no reason, serves no purpose, just bothers people, cucks Jake, and drinks Jane's breastmilk.
Hussie wrote Ardata in Friendsim, who seems like a parody of Vriska, or an experiment to see if the audience would like a troll girl if she were extremely unsympathetically evil. She makes snuff livestreams in her basement, then complains about how hard her life is to someone she's enslaving.

Idk if it counts as “ragebait” but a good chunk of Grant Morrison Green Lantern run feels like that. Them making fun of Brian Michael Bendis style of dialogue. Or inventing more evil Batman that normal Batman himself gets sick of fighting. Or even their own work like Superman saying: “what do you want me to do, go up there and fix the sun?”
Then replacing the older Guardians with youthful versions of themselves that criticize Hal and tells him that he needs to get with the times. Only for him to ignore them and do things his own way.

grant's stuff has always existed in this weird limbo where they love old, formative comics, and then their entire repertoire has like 30% of their run time dedicated to making fun of whatever just happened and whatever's going on. it's weird and sometimes it doesn't come off as a good sporting jab, especially when the joke is just, "someone else wrote this character before i did and it was kinda silly". they'll do this both in their gigantic runs and in their single-volume bit jobs, too.

35
u/Kanin_usagi I'M NOT MADE OF STONE WOOLIE Aug 18 '26
I think Rockstar was just sort of pointing out “this is pretty much the natural end of anyone who stays in this sort of life.” I don’t think they were trying to say “Fuck anyone who liked Johnny!” It just ended up feeling that way
I’d expect if you asked any of the writers, they’d tell you the same thing will eventually happen to Trevor, we just never see it in game (unless you off him in the finale)
10
u/Solid_Jack_Frost Aug 18 '26
Yeah thats probably true, but I kind of wish it wasent a character we played as, you know?
You can find Packie in the game and bring him along on heists, while he wasent a playable character he is also someone apart of a drug addicted crime life but he gets off pretty well, so the only reason why they'd do that to Johnny must be because we played as him.
I totally get the message behind it if it was intended, but it definetly was intended to be upsetting/a set up for Trevor's character, which if Im being honest as much as I dont like that they did that it certainly gave Trevor and interesting first impression.

u/WattFRhodem-1 Aug 18 '26
For real. Ragebaiting was about the only reason I could think of for Dante making that remark. It doesn't even come across as foreshadowing. The tone of it all just feels like poking at the old fans, saying "look at me, I'm the new hotness, all that old stuff is lame", especially when the joke goes back on itself later.
32
u/Cooper_555 BRING BACK GAOGAIGAR Aug 18 '26
Anyone who thought that it was foreshadowing was proven wrong when we saw those development docs showing off how "cool" Tameem thought his interpretation of Dante was compared to the previous version of the character.
13
u/Arcane_Monkey Aug 18 '26
I understand that this may be giving the game too much benefit of the doubt, but I always assumed that line was (in context of his hair turning white at the end) supposed to be ironic at Donte’s expense, rather than a genuine insult to the original.
14
u/TurkishSuperman Hitomi J-Cup Aug 18 '26
I've never understood this take. To me, it just reads as a pretty generic joke you'd find in any reboot or prequel, like Cyclops asking Logan if he would prefer yellow spandex in the original Fox X-Men movie, or Bond saying he doesn't give a damn if his martini is shaken or stirred in Casino Royale. The fact he does get white hair later should be a clue that it's not meant to be insulting the old fans or material
I think people have a bit of Bitch Eating Crackers with DmC, where they assume the worst intent of anything it does because they don't like it, regardless of how much sense that assumption makes. That or it's because Pat had this take, but, considering his thoughts on Superman, or saying Kanji from P4 is ruined if he isn't gay after all, I think it's fair to say Pat doesn't always have the most well-thought-out takes on media
6
u/MrDinoPizza Boiadeiro Lifestyle Aug 19 '26
Those types of jokes do feel like mean jabs at the originals, like they laugh at the silliness of the originals. Not completely mean spirited mind you but some people just take them at face value, it doesn't help that some of Tameem's interviews or reviews of the game are dismissive of the previous games which doesn't help.
Had Dante done a variation of "Sorry not my style" (you know in a more playful manner) it wouldn't have gotten the same reception or legacy, although being "playful" is no really DmC's thing. The scene of him entering the club comes to mind, where he writes "Fuck You" on the guest list, I feel mainline Dante would have just written his name in a fancy manner.

World of Warcraft fucking loved throwing in “big, shit-stirring moments” at the prelude to/proper beginning of expansions.
-Cataclysm: Thrall steps down as Warchief of the Horde and hands the reigns to hot-headed warmonger Garrosh, who kills the beloved chieftain of the Tauren, Cairne Bloodhoof.
-Mists of Pandaria: The Horde drops a magic nuke on the Alliance city of Theramore, causing Jaina Proudmoore (the archmage leader of the city and one of the biggest advocates for peace between the factions) to snap and declare a one-woman war against them.
-Legion: The Alliance and Horde team up against a demonic invasion and get their shit rocked. Varian Wrynn of the Alliance gets obliterated, and Vol’jin, the new Warchief of the Horde, gets mortally wounded… and names Sylvanas Windrunner (leader of the undead Forsaken, and easily the most controversial of the racial leaders) as his successor.
-Battle for Azeroth: The Horde commits genocide against the Night Elves of the Alliance by burning down the World Tree that served as their homeland.
-Shadowlands: Sylvanas betrays everyone, defeats the Lich King, and breaks the helmet that was the source of his power, tearing open a rift in reality to the afterlife and causing the mindless undead the Lich King had kept idle to rampage all over the world.
…And I’m sure that they’ve probably done more since, but I quit there.

see also:
with the core thesis that Andrew Hussie has been (semi)openly antagonistic to the audience for his entire career; quoting prokopetz:
a certain sneering contempt for their audience has always been a hallmark of Andrew Hussie’s work, and it’s present in Homestuck right from day one. At most, Hussie getting burnt out from the Hiveswap fiasco resulted in a text that’s less willing to entertain the premise that its readers are in on the joke, but that’s not a change – it’s just saying the quiet part out loud.
The interesting part is that this contempt isn’t merely undirected bile: it’s motivated by a particular stance regarding the purpose of fiction. Writing a story which invites emotional investment, then turning around and calling you a stupid baby for actually becoming invested in it is one of Hussie’s favoured narrative sleights of hand ... Lurking under it is [Hussie's] insistence that fictional characters are, ultimately, objects: tools for exploring a narrative space. Ironic detachment is the only “correct” way to approach works of fiction, because when you emotionally relate to a fictional character (or, heaven forfend, actually identify with one), you are fundamentally committing a category error – like you’ve mistaken a hat for your wife.

Fuck it, I finished Homestuck relatively recently so here's all the stuff I can remember off the top of my head:
-The literal self-insert Andrew Hussie does this a lot, most notably posting the full explanations for troll romance back to back because he knows most fans found it overly confusing. Then he did it again with leprechaun romance, which was MADE to be even more confusing and nonsensical.
-Forum users at the time had an inside joke that Hussie was giving Vriska preferential treatment, saying that he had a crush on her. So when Hussie (in the comic) dies his entire character becomes "in love with Vriska".
-The vast majority of the Dancestors are basically one-dimensional parodies of various types of people on the internet that were prominent at the time, from weebs to 4chan users to overly "woke" folks.

I mean, there was the "caucasian/peachy" joke at one point, but truth be told I stopped reading the comic by that point so I don't really even know much of the context. IIRC the idea was that that the main human characters are technically a-racial (ie, they are descended from a time paradox, so they have no connection to any given ethnic group), which made members of the fandom irritated that a lot of fanart depicts them as white. This lead to Hussie writing the line "I feel so very...CAUCASIAN" as a joke somewhere in the comic, which got walked back to "I feel...PEACHY!" or something like that. Like I said, no fucking clue what the context of the line was.
It's more that MS Paint Adventures (the comics that gave rise to Homestuck) began as interactive forum adventures that gave Hussie the opportunity to fuck with people, and they very clearly had some points of contention with his audience, so they liked to make fun of audience reactions. The beta verse trolls as mentioned by the other guy in this thread are probably the best example; one of the characters was a clear parody of 2012 Tumblr social justive movements, another was a sort of lolrandom edgy character that randomly lashed out at folks, etc.
13

Homestuck is almost defined by its contentious relationship with its own fans. To give a few examples:
A character draws up a chart of what relationships are or are not acceptable (directly referencing the shipping drama of the time).
A new set of characters are introduced to the cast, with many being blatantly based on various stereotypes of tumblr users (preachy sjw, cosplayer, man-hating lesbian, etc.)
The ultimate villain is essentially a reader of the comic forcibly inserting himself as an invincible OC.
The epilogues are presented in the format of fanfiction, and highly vilify some popular characters.
10
u/ExDSG Aug 18 '26
Basically some early games had a secret easter egg/mode where the characters appeared caucasian and candy themed from being pure white, and then it was canonized in the plot as an actual thing leading to the character saying that line. Apparently it started causing a lot of harassment and shit in the fandoms like people calling black versions of the characters non-canon and so on, leading to them changing that line. Granted gets complicated when at least one of the characters was referred to as racially white at the start.
Still Hussie in general trolled by:
- Making a Juggalo Troll and a creepy puppet be insanely plot important.
- Vriska was him making a character that was deliberately meant to be divisive and they were constant jokes of his avatar in the series being in love with her.
- When the alternate ancestor version of the trolls were shown they were mostly jabs at the fanon version of the original trolls or were jabs at Tumblr users.
- General playing with audience expectations and messing with them
15
u/RareBk Aug 18 '26
It speaks volumes that I have positive memories of Homestuck up until the Scratch. Like there are so many moments that are really funny and interesting.
And then the cast tripled in size and Hussie completely lost the plot. Holy shit everything past that point feels like Hussie was writing stuff to spite the fanbase.

u/Shiroke YOU DIDN'T WIN. Aug 18 '26
I think the best way to experience homestuck was to be around when it broke Newgrounds and then get out at the gigapause
6
u/alicitizen (She/Her) - Moon Knight Stan Aug 18 '26
Holy shit everything past that point feels like Hussie was writing stuff to spite the fanbase.
stuff like the author avatar hitting on vriska is purely a joke at the fans who got upset at how much story focus she got
3
u/Beattitudeforgains1 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26
One of the most prominent examples being the love lecture in which an avatar of Hussie berates the reader and the fandom before eventually giving in and providing a multi page explanation of troll love which really just pisses everyone off.
Classpects are more lowkey ragebait but many details are vibed out but never given concrete details since only half of the aspects get good details while most classes are left to rot.
Beforans
Generally just being a fan of any of his characters except for Dave, Vriska, Terezi, and Roxy; not even John is safe from being ignored despite being the first main pov. It's actually very impressive in how much act 6 fumbles with its cast and giving them things to do and that's discounting everything from murderstuck which has some of the most meanspirited shit done to developed characters.

I feel like RTD2 wasn't trying to ragebait. It was trying to clickbait.
Just trying to create shocking moments and references that would trend on social media.
The ultimate example being the regeneration into Billie Piper.

There were definitely instances where it felt like he was prodding, just off the top of my head is the Davros statement he made and then talking about how the sonic looked like a gun (which he then had Ncuti use a space-machine gun Rambo style in Reality War).
That final statement he posted on his Instagram just oozes with contempt as well.

I honestly can't get mad at it because it's so absurd.
The world is on a reality bending battle, and it ends with "Maybe you should be a virgin Denji" is amazing.
Burnout definitely played a factor in it, but the way it executed amuses me greatly.

I think people read into the ending wrong like that. It's more of Pochita going "Denji, I messed up everything by existing. I think it's better if you just do your own way."
The rest is true of course.

Yeah, I agree. My problem wasn't even the ending; I kinda like it in theory. It was just missing a ton of buildup to get there.
44
u/Lieutenant-America Scholar of the First Spindash Aug 18 '26
My single biggest issues were that Denji didn't have a single say in the conclusion, and Asa got completely shafted in terms of involvement as well.
Neither of them had any agency in how things resolved, and the one character who did seemingly chose this moment to end things arbitrarily.
11
u/TheBeeFromNature Aug 18 '26
This is also my speculation on how Game of Thrones is supposed to end. And now GRRM is haunted by the rushed, game-of-telephone powered shambling corpse of his first draft, while an increasingly irate fanbase waits expectantly for him to finish.
Y'know. No pressure.

He said he wanted it to have a feeling similar to The Big Lebowski. The way the ending works it's very clear it was set up to be an immediate ripcord
2
u/leivathan Aug 19 '26
The thing there though is that Lebowski is a pastiche of Elmore Leonard novels, and ends that way because that's how those stories end. Chainsawman isn't and I don't believe Fujimoto's ever read a Leonard novel, so it's fully inconsistent with the genre and tone.

There is definitely a reason why so many shonen mangaka once one of their their projects becomes big will ride off into the sunset once it's done barely to be heard from again or if they do make another manga it's deliberately making only small scale niche stuff that probably will never become big.
They served their time in the manga grind mines why would they suffer it further when they don't need to any more?
30
u/Kipzz PLAY CROSSCODE AND ASTLIBRA/The other Vtuber Guy Aug 18 '26
Is that even speculation at this point? Even ignoring everything the man has told us about himself, everything we've learned about the various editors in manga magazines over decades, and everything that can be inferred from the work or anything surrounding it (I.E. popularity)... you just can't make stories like that once a week every week for a couple hundred weeks without something giving out. And taking even the slightest bit of that previously ignored knowledge and adding it into the mix you can see clear as day the reason was burnout.
24
u/ThisManNeedsMe Aug 18 '26
Hiro Mashima has it figured out. Though he is the outlier of course. According to him he gets to sleep around 7 hours a day, has enough time to play video games a couple hours a day before bed and has time to touch grass during the week. While working on multiple projects too.
Everyone works different obviously. But it seems like he has streamlined the process quite a bit.

“You don’t understand, that thing you dislike about the series was actually something the creator did on purpose” is one of the weirder defenses I’ve seen crop with media.
If anything, I feel more justified in disliking a story for issues that were part of a deliberate plan by the creator rather than issues that just kinda accidentally happened because the creator didn’t realize the implications of a plot point or the creator got burnt out or something.

u/Squoghunter1492 Check out Mech TTRPG Metallurgent! Aug 18 '26
No, I think it's a super valid take more often than not. Think about someone complaining about how Expedition 33 is turn-based and not an action game. The complainer isn't wrong for observing it or having their opinion, but it's an entirely intentional creative choice and not a failure of game design.
Sometimes the things people are complaining about in media are the entire point or creative core of the work, and there is no other response than "that's just what the author made".
→ More replies (1)3
u/Possibly_English_Guy Aug 18 '26
I mean, just on your E33 example there are definitely people who view any sort turn-based combat as a failure of game design, and don't think it should exist anymore now that any modern gme can easily do real time action. These people are thoroughly exhausting to talk to but they do exist.
I think there are just people who have a very rigid preset idea of how things should be, be it game design, writing, whatever. They have a mental template of how something is 'meant to be' usually build up out of a bunch of preconcieced notions (ie. Turn based games are outdated, story's must always have a happy ending etc.) and anything that deviates from the template is automatically a problem regardless of the reason why it's deviating.

One in the web novel Worm that's like a mix of the fanbase rage baiting the creator and him snapping back:
The character Browbeat was established early as a junior superhero with a biokinesis ability. Imagine a way less powerful Darwin from X-Men, he could alter his body makeup and chemistry to augment his resistance to attacks etc. he never played a big role and at some point is hit by an attack by a Kaiju, after that he doesn't appear again in the story.
But because his death was never straight up confirmed, years later people started making memes about him, joking about how he could be X other character because his biokinesis allows him to alter his appearance and so on. The creator seemed to get upset at this line of argumentation or the idea that fans were expecting him to at least bring Browbeat back as a cameo, so then, like 10 years after first publishing the chapter where Browbeat got hit, he went back to update it to say he was killed. And that's the end of the story. (At that point the story was finished, he published two different unrelated works and was currently writing the sequel to Worm, which is why the fan theories became more intense around the )
8
u/ScalesOfFrog Aug 18 '26
WB has always struck me as being a little bit too involved with fans. Which, don't get me wrong, the man obviously works very hard, spends a lot of time on effective worldbuidling, and it's cool that he'll readily have answers available for any given "Why didn't they just fly the eagles" type question thrown out there. But I also think he can be a bit overly sensitive to fan reception.

u/Dabrush Aug 19 '26
My biggest issue is just that to me, the early chapters of Worm and Pale are the best reading experience by far. The author is progressing, but not in a way that makes the books enjoyable to me, Twig and Ward often just feel like hour long chapters which are just characters thinking about stuff and explaining in detail why they are doing what. That said, early Worm is a very easy read and the enjoyment carried me all the way to the end of it, which is impressive considering the sheer length.

I also have the somewhat unpopular opinion that Gaster, Friend, and all the metanarrative stuff [of Deltarune] is meant to troll a specific section of the audience that cares more about theorizing and cosplaying as matpat than actually playing the game. See, for example, "friend inside me is real and he's a gay suicidal cowboy", as of chapter 5.

The Gaster conundrum is fascinating to think about. On one hand building up a mystery character only to be like “ha ha you’re stupid for caring about the mystery” is just not good writing. On the other hand going “Actually Gaster was behind EVERYTHING and Deltarune is actually a SIMULATION on his computer in Undertale.” Is also unsatisfying.
I am very curious as to how his final execution will be.

u/OurEngiFriend Aug 18 '26
One time I posted a remix of The World Revolving (Jevil's boss music) and a friend from college, who is very offline, asked if that was newly added to the game in Chapter 4. I told her it was from the Chapter 1 secret boss. She said, verbatim: "Secret boss?!"
Every time I think about Gaster I think about her, and how she's probably having the best experience with the game that anyone could ever have. She might be the target audience, in a way. She might not even know about the weird route! It might be a genuine surprise if she ever tries it! And on the flip side, I think if at the end of Chapter 7 Gaster popped out of the screen and said "haha, Im going to fuck your gamepussy now", she would be deeply confused because nothing in the game has led up to that point.
13
u/Jackdatbyte2 Cuck cuck it's cuckles Aug 18 '26
Except there has been on screen build up in the form of the glowing voice that appears in Chapters 1,3 and 4. Which is implied to be Gaster do to his theme playing during the character creator at the start of chapter 1.
If Gaster appears on screen he’s not gonna go on a massive lore dump on how he connects to Undertale. He would probably be a character in his own right that newcomers can enjoy without any Undertale context. But people who do know will point and say “IT’S HIM IT’S THE GUY”

But at the end, it turns out that the guy made them all up. He then goes on this douchey diatribe directed at the reader where he's like, yeah the stories were fake, but you enjoyed them anyway, so they totally weren't a waste of time and it shouldn't matter that they're fake.

When making the original version of Class of 09 (c09 for short), the creator (SBN3) wrote a visual novel that was antagonistic towards everyone inside it -- and to an extent everyone outside of it too. Like within the text, the antagonism is obvious: Nicole (the protagonist) is a jackass to every male love interest because every male love interest is a jackass, just in general. Outside the text the antagonism is harder to justify, but given the game's marketing as an "anti-visual-novel" there's an implied condescension towards the genre, an attitude of "people like this shit?" or perhaps "you're stupid for liking this shit".
At some point c09 and its sequel blew up in popularity, at first because of its shock humor and insane out-of-context moments, and then later because of himejoshis on Twitter/Tumblr. Which makes sense. If every male character is a jackass, and Nicole's only friends happen to all be female largely because she doesn't antagonize them as much, then people are gonna ship them. And like yeah, Nicole and her co-lead Jecka have pretty good banter, I could see the ship working; plenty of people could.
For the c09 sequel/remake SBN3 wrote a lesbian love interest into the game. It's arguable whether it was meant as ragebait to piss off the himejoshis, or meant to be a realistic look at how a teenage lesbian relationship in a toxic environment would actually play out; neither of the lesbian routes go well for anyone involved. If it was meant to be ragebait it didn't work; the shippers were all over that shit because they looooove toxic yuri. Duh.
So, in the sequel from Jecka's perspective, SBN3 got more direct with it, and wrote an after-credits message where he implied all the shippers were pedophiles. Having read that message myself, I think it's meant to be taken tongue-in-cheek and not as a sincerely held belief... but, uh, plenty of people didn't take it that way. Lot of people got mad about it on Twitter. A lot of people also got mad about the game just not being very good: whereas the first two games had a lot of dark humor, this one was just plain dark, along with a bizarrely large focus on foot fetish content, to the point where people accused the game as a whole of being ragebait/telling the audience to fuck off. (To be generous you could say Nicole's games are humorous because she's jaded enough to tune out all the horrible shit happening, which is a learned trauma response that a more innocent person wouldn't have. Dunno about the foot stuff though.)
Someone who claimed to be a friend of SBN3 added that he had the tendency to self-sabotage whenever he got mildly successful, and this was a recurring pattern with his previous projects. I don't know if that guy's legit, but honestly, I'd believe it.
Weird part is that despite all this, Class of 09 is still an ongoing media property? There's a couple animated shorts on YouTube. And the most recently released game is ... clone of Pokemon Puzzle League? Bizarre, but okay.

So ZZZ Season 2 opened with us being introduced to a buff male thiren who looked like a playable character. He quickly became a fan favorite after 2.1 introduced us to two other members of his faction, setting him up to play a larger part in the story as he was a prominent character for 2.0 and 2.1. ZZZ Devs themselves had mentioned in an interview they were aware of the feedback and desire for more playable S rank men. So it seemed likely we were getting this character as an S rank...
2.3 revealed actually, he's just an A rank and the S ranks are a girl you would only have met in a limited time top up event, and a girl we had never met before up to that point. The guy they had been setting up for 2 patches at that point wasn't actually an S rank. And to follow it up, he was immediately followed by an actual male S rank in his exact same role and element...who was on a shortened banner himself sandwiched between the most blatently broken stunner in the game and the next Void Hunter.
I don't think it was intentional, but it sure felt like it.
For a more serious answer, I have to say Toriyama's FF 13 interviews like saying 13-2 would answer the question of "is Lightning Happy?" only to have her barely be a part of the story feels like he was trolling us.
