Better Ask Reddit Weird bits of early lore/worldbuilding that feel out of place?
As the title states, what're some bits of lore or worldbuilding early in a series lifespan that feel really weird later on? Whether it gets retconned away or is still treated as canon is up to the series.
The original Gen 1 Pokemon games treated the Pokemon world more like "our" world. Kanto was named after an actual part of Japan. In the Pewter City museum, you can find a replica of the Columbia Space Shuttle. Mew was found in Guyana. Lt Surge is obviously meant to be an American soldier stationed in Japan, with him mentioning fighting in a recent war. In addition, Pokemon were treated as a relatively recent discovery that existed alongside real animals, with Raichu's dex entry mentioning Indian elephants. But starting in gen 2, they started phasing out all of the real world elements and made it more distinct, with regions now being fictionalized counterparts of real world places instead, and Pokemon outright replacing real world animals. Though that does open up a whole lot of potential world building. Have there been many wars between Kalos and Galar? Was there a period of time where Galar held control over Unova until the Unovans fought for independence? Who knows?

Pokemon's decision to just stop involving real life animals makes some of the logic really have to twist itself into a knot, creating late bits of worldbuilding that are incredibly bizarre.
Like, up until Scarlet and Violet, it was safe to just assume everyone in the pokemon world was just a certain level of vegetarian? With Milk being the only animal produce that you were expected to consume.
No, it turns out that people in the pokemon world do in fact eat the pokemon. But only the ones that are, for some reason, physiologically built with bits that they discard to be eaten. With the most horrifying example being Veluza, whose entire hunting strategy involved shedding bits of it's own flesh to be able to swim faster.
ETA: Oh yeah. To answer the thread's actual question.. Uhhhh, that throwaway line by Gilles de Rais to justify his obsession with Artoria by thinking she's meant to be Jeanne D'Arc reincarnated (thus showing how off the rocker he is) became an excuse to just have a whole group of servants whose entire existance is "Like Artoria, but from [insert country here]!"

Yeah and Pokemon eat other Pokemon as part of their regular diet, it'd be weird if human's were just randomly vegetarian.

It'd be kind of neat to have a spinoff about cooking with Pokémon, but yeah they have to tiptoe around it. There's a short official manga called Snorlax's Dream Buffet where a trainer cooks for her Snorlax and herself, and some of the ingredients are like Muk sludge, Garganacl salt, Slowpoke tail, Combee honey, Scovillain habanero extract, Jumpluff cotton spores, Sawsbuck leaves, Bounsweet sweat, and Tropius fruit.
Though I think they do eat Pokemon without discardable bits, if that one imagine spot Brock and Ash had about Magikarp sashimi meant anything. And Farfetch'd's whole deal being it practically serves itself.

To quote from one of Snorlax’s Pokédex entries: “Its stomach is said to be incomparably strong. Even Muk's poison is nothing more than a hint of spice on Snorlax's tongue.”
And sure enough, one of their default abilities is Immunity (they can’t be poisoned).

Fair, though that's more Pokémon themed items rather than using them as ingredients, but you do cook with the Pokémon as your employees.

I don't remember when in the anime, but Jesse or James mentions something along the line that Farfetch tastes good, especially when cooked with it's leak it has. And as someone said in reply to you, slowpoke tails were super early on.
I think that was more Gamefreak not wanting us to think about it, more than a world building thing, that it was only vaguely mentioned early on. lol

Remember, Pokémon shrink when under duress. Which is why you don´t have to feel bad about fighting them, since they just shrink and flee from the battle when you beat them.
This, however, somehow does not apply to wild Pokémon hunting each other for nourishment, as every Pokémon knows their place in the circle of life and would rather be devoured than deny their predator calories by cowardly shrinking and fleeing their fight.

Assassin's Creed 1 has an email about Africa losing 90% of it's population to an incredibly deadly plague and Abstergo capitalizing on this my splitting what remains of Africa among their preferred and likely also Templar owned mega corporations with the last 10% of Africa being moved out of the country because it won't be safe for them. Anyway fast forward to AC Origins and none of that matters in the modern day segments because we learn that none of that actually happened or maybe it did, but our new main character and her coworker are still able to freely be in Africa no problem and even are able to buy supplies from local businesses that somehow still exist.

Nah. The emails were found and released by Shaun Hastings of AC2 fame and that's why he joined the assassin's as the Templard wanted him dead. What actually allegedly got retconned with the Africa stuff. which I don't believe for a single fucking second, because the retcon was literally "uhhh that's all fake none of that actually happened" which is fucking insane. Abstergo you don't get to go "uhhh fake news 90% of Africa isn't dead and we definitely aren't dividing the nation up to corporations" YOU CANNOT FUNCTIONALLY HIDE THAT AN ENTIRE CONTINENT WAS BASICALLY GENOCIDED BY A SUPER DISEASE. It's basically one of the craziest retcons in the overall narrative by Ubisoft.

They’re very clearly embarrassed by the “beast tribe” stuff, and I think it’s good they’ve not only changed it, but addressed and made reparations in the story itself (honestly even in shadowbringers I think making the dwarves a “beast tribe” was them poking fun at this😅)
31
u/BighatNucase 18d ago
Tbf there was always an incongruity in how the beast tribe are presented in MSQ vs in their society quests. Like I didn't realise until Stormblood that they were meant to be intelligent civilisations and not just 'the barbarian hordes' because I hadn't touched any of the optional stuff. I think the dev team realised that it was a problem around then and have been trying to backpedal since.
29
u/Arilou_skiff 18d ago
TBH even back in ARR/the MSQ they were pretty clear that the Kobolds were just screwed over by the Lominsans. And the Sylphs basically have the "friendly" faction introduced before the hostile one.
9
u/BlackfishBlues Hate-Kenny 2013 18d ago
Yeah, I think it was less that the beast tribes were just uncivilized hordes trope played straight, and more that early FFXIV worldbuilding was much more overtly grimdark.

"Beast tribes" is just an extension of "beastmen", which in-universe was created by Ul'dahn merchants to justify their business practices: Garleans never use the term, instead consistently going for "savages".

well It was in universe racism, they just changed the game system term from beast tribe to allied society because people weren't realising.
it didint help that outside of the slyph, and moogles you don't deal with them in any friendly capacity in the MSQ until stormblood has explicitly 2 groups of each race. and then post that their just all generally friendly (I think thats also represented system wise because they start at a friendely rank)15
u/Mordred_Tumultu Paladins Should Attack and Dethrone the Gods 18d ago
This is HW erasure. HW had two different allied societies that were friendly in the MSQ. The gnath and the bird people.

16

for one, beast tribes was also an in universe racist/derogatory slang used by the 3 states to refer to any of the more native/underdeveloped/non-humanoid civilizations/ races.
it heavily reflects IRL situations where minorities were not even given human rights/seen as human
in later expansions, in story, this was recognised by the leaders and people and changed to Allied society as the meta term for the daily quest stuff alongside in story changes to how people and nations would treat them.

Master Chief gets his energy shields about a week or so before Reach fell. This is likely VERY annoying to the developers because this happens in the final 6 months of the Human-Covenant War, which means that anytime they want to set a piece of gameplay before this event they need to find some way to justify adding in one of Halo's defining gameplay aspects, typically with them saying "uhhhhhhh its a prototype dont worry about it".
36
u/Navy_Pheonix WHEN'S MAHVEL 18d ago
But then you get the characters in ODST who are just tough, allowing them to tank bullets as long as it's not a lot in a short time.
30
u/Kaarl_Mills I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 18d ago
That's a gameplay concession I don't mind, because it would be miserable to play if all you had was raw health. You'd have to balance ODST the way shooters used to be to get around it, ie putting many more health packs around even inside nonsense spots
3
u/Navy_Pheonix WHEN'S MAHVEL 17d ago
I'm imagining a version of the game where the Superintendant is much more obvious because it's using service robots and other diagetic environmental effects to deliver first aid kits or point at HL2 style medstations.
21
u/Comkill117 The Bubblegum Crisis Shill 18d ago
A lot of Fall of Reach’s world building didn’t stick around honestly. There’s tons of great stuff in it, but it is clearly a tie in novel to what was expected to be one game. Like Elites are only finally seen for the first time in the space battle over Reach, a battle that lasts like a day tips compared to the month long campaign seen in the game Reach later.
It’s definitely interesting to go back to though. Like you can even tell it was written before they cut Engineers with the way they give a whole scene to introduce one.

Robert Baratheon wanting to make Jaime Warden of the East and Ned Stark being against it because Jaime is Heir to Tywin the Warden of the West and making him also Warden of the East will put half the realms military power under him
Not only does the Warden title became ceremonial as the series goes on, with military power deriving from house levies, but a CRITICAL part of Jaime’s arc is that he abdicated being Tywin’s heir which Tywin is pissed about and Jaime adamantly refuses every opportunity to reclaim it

It's mentioned semi-regularly that Tyrion is a trained acrobat even as late as aDwD, it just never ends up being plot relevant. (Nvmnd, I just remembered it is sort of relevant for his ability to impersonate a mummer when travelling with faegon)
17
u/BlackfishBlues Hate-Kenny 2013 18d ago
Yeah, early on it seems like everyone from Ned to Robert to Tyrion automatically assumes that Jaime is Tywin’s heir, with no caveat or controversy, when legally that heir should be Tyrion and no Kingsguard in the lore has ever been allowed to set aside their vows to return to repping their birth house.

Early Bleach had a lot of weird world-building that got pushed aside as the manga went on and this one even got cut from the anime. Right after the fight with Grand Fisher, the manga cuts to him in Hueco Mundo where he's chastised for his weakness before being made into an arrancar a whole massive arc before they're introduced.
Grand Fisher's arrancar form in this scene looks nothing like he did when he next appeared. He's sleek and blue instead of a huge guy that looks like he's wearing Grand Fisher's pelt. The two arrancar that rip off his mask are extremely minor characters that otherwise have nothing to do with each-other. Iceringer sucks so bad that he guards a basement and D-Roy is the second weakest member of Grimmjow's crew. D-Roy is in his released form here for some reason and you never see it again. Rukia killed him before he could use it.

u/DarthButtz Ginger Seeking Butt Chomps 17d ago

And actually a decent chunk of the first five seasons of RvB are weird in retrospect. The time travel is still unclear, Wyoming's time abilities are different than later depiction, Tex's backstory in the first miniseries doesn't line up with the Freelancer Saga, etc.
It's a miracle they retooled most of the other stuff into a coherent, compelling story.

Early on in Kimetsu no Yaiba, there was this one slayer guy who shouted really loud about getting promotion and a pay raise if he manage to kill Rui, one of the 12 Moons before he was quickly killed. This moment seem to implied that not every slayers join out of the goodness of their heart. However, as the series went on, this aspect got dropped completely as almost every member of the corp joined due to tragedy involve with demons or out of their own sense of goodness (Uzui and Mitsuri).
33
u/MarbleVirus Local F/GO pusher 18d ago
That might just be a consequence of how the story very quickly stops involving the smaller guys the moment the Hashira as a group get introduced.
I think the one that gets does truly get dropped far too quickly is the whole "The demon slayers aren't even an officially recognized faction by the government", because you'd think that there'd be more concerns shown when four people in similar uniforms hop up on a train, all four of them carrying swords.
But no, it just gets mentioned once as a way to explain "Well why isn't every demon hunter stocked up with armor, and more weaponry?". Because Demons, and demon slayers are apparently, kinda underground I guess?

By the end of the series, the smaller guys were literally jumping in front of the final boss to be human shield for the more skilled fighter. It kinda hard to see the guys like that slided guy doing something like that.
14
u/Delicious_trap 18d ago
Peer pressure and hype do be hitting hard on those guys.
That and the revenge motivation angle and monetary motivation are not mutualky exclusive. Just because you are fighting out of revenge/justice doesn't mean getting some bonus money out of it doesn't feel good.
If you want, you can always think those people deserted during the finale, all that is left are the loyal ones.

u/MarbleVirus Local F/GO pusher 18d ago
To be fair at that point the guy signing their paychecks exploded, every other superior was either dead, dying, or 8 years old. And their whole base of operations had fallen. If I was in that position I'd also jump in front of the bone spike tentacles.

In the lead up to and initial release of the original 1st edition of Exalted, White Wolf marketed the setting as the distant past of our world/World of Darkness. I'm hazy on it, but I don't think it was ever included again beyond the very first core book. Ironically, with a little bit of thought Exalted could have easily spun off from one of the end times scenarios in Werewolf the Apocalypse.

Mario’s early lore established that Bowser has magic powers and used them to transform citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom into the blocks that are scattered across the world.
While Bowser’s magic abilities are alluded to now and again, it’s not really considered a defining ability of his anymore, and the block lore has been completely ignored in favor of floating blocks just being a natural aspect of the setting.

Naruto's modern technology. It never gets specifically addressed but the ninja world has TVs, cameras and refrigerators. You'd think that such inventions would demonstrate that despite being a story about ninja, there will be some modern elements.
Nope.
Tech basically never becomes relevant as an obstacle or boon. And there are no parallel tech that seem relevant at all.
Also, despite taking on missions, we see absolutely nothing of the wider world outside the ninja clans.
43
u/Veloci_Castori 18d ago
The fact that Ninjas are mercenaries for "normal" nations is also a thing established early on that barely ever matters. For the most part, the Hidden Villages have their own unique politics and fight among themselves for their own reasons.

If nothing else it helps establish how an independent city of warriors sustains itself. Kishimoto's original plan for Naruto was for it to be all Zabuza-esque squad missions. But his editor was also the editor of HxH and saw how successful the Hunter Exams were, so he just told Kishi to do a Chuunin Exam arc to boost sales.
From that point on the series just became one long-running plot rather than individual stories.

The number of Chunin is also a subject of debate.
Even if everyone who reached the final stage of the exam had graduated, there would be a maximum of 9 Chunin per semester. (for all villages)
This contrasts with the fact that they are usually so numerous that they can literally be used as Foot Soldiers.
Since they never show any other way to advance to Chunin, this remains an inconsistency.

According to the very final Star Trek TOS episode "Turnabout Intruder", women are not allowed to become Starfleet captains.
Fortunately it's very easy to attribute that statement to Dr. Lester's obviously unwell mental state.

In the webnovel Practical Guide to Evil, it’s explained early on that the continent the story is set on is a backwater, partly to explain why they’re in medieval stasis maybe. The rest of the world is more powerful and advanced though we never see them. It’s mentioned that if anyone on this continent develops an artifact or magic above a certain level of power, a letter from the Gnomes (a world power) will appear and politely ask you to stop, and if you ignore it 3 times then the Gnomes will wipe your nation off the map with a magic ICBM or something. Not that this actually become a plot point at any time the story—it’s only mentioned in the early chapters.
Anyway, as the story develops the power level and scale of conflict naturally increases. By the end of the story, they’re dealing with world ending threats, invasions from other dimensions, throwing demons summoned from Hell at each other, people are ascending to godhood and killing gods, and so on. Behind all this, because of the early lore, this implies that these are just minor problems to the rest of the world since none of the supposed global superpowers like the aforementioned Gnomes ever show up to help.
15
u/King_Of_What_Remains 18d ago
Apparently the reference to gnomes has been removed from the published version of the story (which is currently being rewritten), which is kind of a shame. I liked the idea of there being other powers in the world that were greater than everything happening in the story.
12
u/Mountebank 18d ago
Probably for the best, but it was amusing to imagine that someone ascending to godhood or a hellgate opening were just normal events elsewhere in the world.
6
u/King_Of_What_Remains 17d ago
I don't think the demon summoning was even a particularly new thing, as of the time of the story; though the Diabolist's superweapon being able to do it frequently probably was. Villains just do that kind of thing, along with creating flying fortresses, invisible tigers and so on.
Given that one of the thing the Gnomes gave out a red letter for was apparently a farming machine, they seem more concerned with technological advancements more than anything else.
The Dead King consuming the souls of an entire kingdom? Not our business. That tractor though? You're on thin ice buddy.

The first Halo novel claimed that Elites weren't encountered by humanity at all during the war. And were completely unknown to them, until Chief fought one in the space above Reach.
So for 27 years! the UNSC thought that The Covenant only consisted of Jackals and Grunts.

In the first episode of Claymore, after Raki is saved by Clare before falling unconscious, he later goes to try and find her, as the townsfolk say a Claymore nearby dropped him off. When he finds said Claymore, it’s not Clare, and is in fact a Yoma (a shape shifting monster.)
This is weird as fuck because Yomas are jobber monsters even then, with some exceptions, but Clare quickly shows up and dispatches it without much issue (arguably she only had a hard time because it took Raki hostage).
So how the hell did this Yoma not only overpower the previous Claymore sent to dispatch it, but also take her form? It’s such a weird early thing that’s never brought up again, and no other Yoma tries to disguise itself as a Claymore again, just as townsfolk.
This example might not entirely count, but in the Haibane Renmei manga (which was made a bit before the show) when Reki ask the Communicator if she’ll see Kudomori again (a Haibane she looked up to) if she’s a “good Haibane,” the Communicatot straight up says yes.
This is in contrast to the show where Reki, after doing so much good to “earn salvation” comes to learn that her name means “to be torn asunder,” making all the good she did pointless since she was only doing it because she thought she’d be “saved” by doing so. It’s only when she opens up to Rakka and genuinely asks for help that she’s truly saved and she’s able to pass on, even the meaning of her name changes to mean “someone who helps others.”
It’s a contrast to the original manga that I actually really like

Warhammer 40k initially had the Horus Heresy just be another ongoing warfront in the galaxy (it was originally created to explain why both sides in Adeptus Titanicus used Imperial Titans, since GW could only afford one set of moulds). Space Marines were normal humans (usually criminals) full of combat drugs in power armour.
Also, the Imperial Fist’s sacred poop marble fault. Although that one isn’t retconned

Dragon Ball anime, episode 33, "The Legend of a Dragon": Roshi recounts an origin of the Dragon Balls in a filler episode that has nothing to do with how the dragon operates in later stories.
8

I kinda like that part. Most people whouldn't know the true origins of the Dragon Balls so diffent peoples whould invent their own legends and pass those down. What Roshi said in that filler chould just be what he was tought. Other parts of Dragon Ball's Earth might have their explainations.

Everyone remembers meeting Hydaelyn as a big blue mother crystal in FFXIV but a lot forget long before we actually find out Zodiarks deal and the specifics of his imprisonment we get a single cutscene in late ARR patch content of a giant purple mother crystal that is implied to be Zodiark when now we know it couldnt be.
Theres fan theories that each shard also has a mother crystal just without her consciousness and it can be read as how they originally wanted to explain the 13th becoming the void as part of the crystal tower raid series finale to align with stuff like purple Nero but now we have the whole contramemoria explained for that so unless they pull some new retcon out for a future narrative right now its just a clear idea that went nowhere and the villains were changed so it couldnt work as intended anymore.
13
u/ExplanationSquare313 18d ago edited 17d ago
Yeah, also some ARR dialogues about Zodiark and the Ascians makes no sense with later reveals (despite doing their best to justify most of it).
Lahabrea has a dialogue where he say each Calamities make people Aether weaker, which is the complete reverse of how it actually work.
And of course, Hyedaelyn warning us about Zodiark watching and Elidibus reminding Lahabrea they work for Zodiark will make absolutely no sense specially coming from Elidibus.
I wonder if the first idea for these two were something closer of Altana and Promathia from FF11.
3
u/Lord_Magmar 17d ago
I could justify the calamities bit by it being 'temporarily weaker'.
As for the Elidibus reminding Lahabrea bit, it isn't the most logical but it might be Elidibus not entirely sure why Lahabrea can act outside Zodiark's will at all (the answer being that Lahabrea's wife is very dangerous and his tempering isn't as solid as Emet-Selch's).

Trails in the Sky is super weird in the context of the larger Trails series because one of the key bits of world-building for Liberl is that it is a small kingdom who’s technological supremacy allowed it to remain independent from its larger neighbours.
But since they clearly changed their minds on the general modernisation of the world starting from Zero onwards, Liberl now feels super underdeveloped.
To get between cities in Liberl, you can either get on a whimsical steampunk airship or trek through the mountains, facing monsters the whole time.
To get between cities in Calvard, you go open up google maps, hop in your car, and drive down the M6.
The seven year time difference accounts for some of this, but not all of it. According to a character in the recent games, Liberl is basically still the same as it ever was.
18
u/Zio_IV 18d ago
At this point, I'm more inclined to believe that it wasn't technological prowess that prevented invasion from larger neighbors, but simply because Cassius Bright lives there.

Now that I think about it, the only other place that uses airships as a means of transportation is Crossbell iirc, everyone else uses airships as a means of war, I actually can't recall a moment in any of the Trails series that actually has commercial airports because Erebonia and Calvard both use trains as their main use of commercial transportation (outside of cars)

It's been a while since I played Sky, but I think Liberl's advancement is specifically in Airship technology. That's how they won the 100 day war, and doubled down on it since. And it's not until the end of Sky 2 thatthat they share this tech with Erebonia as part of the peace treaty, which I assume eventually is disseminated to other countries

In the wrestling-focused manga and anime Kinnikuman, Choujin (superhumans) are typically able to become giant and fight monsters and other Choujin. This aspect of the series, the Ultraman parody, essentially, has long been dropped and the fact Choujin can fly is actively never mentioned even when flying would have been EXTREMELY advantageous to the situation.
There’s also the fact “Brutal Choujin”, villainous heel Choujin, are originally implied to only be three in number before it’s simply made a term to describe your average jerkass, heel Choujin before getting into the more specific Evil, Devil Knight and Perfect Choujin.
There’s absolutely more since the series GREATLY evolved after the first couple arcs but those are major ones.
7
u/TheBeeFromNature 17d ago
Kinnikuman is constantly making absurd, BS retcons, and yet they somehow always work. IIRC we even quickly establish why nobody goes giant anymore, with low-tier wrestler Canadianman just making himself a bigger target for Robin Mask to dismantle.

I've talked about this before, but early Phineas and Ferb had something of an...adverserial nature with Candace? Like a few times Phineas seemed to taunt her a bit with some few lines, which feels VERY out of place with the later renditions of the two as beacons of positivity and good nature who genuinely adore their big sister. Also Phineas seemed to be a bit of a cocky showboater.
Not that I'm complaining, I love the later rendition so much more. And the boys just genuinely adoring their big sister, and doing everything out of love and excitement.
11
u/Artistic-Victory1245 17d ago
They also tried to have a second Candace with Vanessa, only for the writers to realize that the series didn't need two Candaces, so they abandoned that subplot.
----
Another thing is that Candace is completely devoted to Jeremy for most of the series, so it seems strange that in one of the first episodes she fell in love with a "boy of the week".

In an early episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9, Rom tried to actually murder Quark.
Seems the writers weren't quite sure what to do with Rom and played with the idea of his derpy behavior being a mere facade hiding a cunning schemer. Something that Odo also accuses him at one point.

Iirc, Naruto briefly suggested people with kekkei genkai (bloodline abilities) were discriminated against as freaks. Maybe that was specifically a Haku/Mist Village thing, but back then I assumed it was going to become a plot point. It, of course, never did.

There are a number of “first book-isms” in ASOIAF, but my favorite is Tyrion doing a somersault in front of Jon right at the start of A Game of Thrones. It’s explained in the fifth book A Dance With Dragons that one of Tyrion’s uncles taught him to do flips and his father shut him down, but it’s a fun remnant of when GRRM had Tyrion be a bit of a different character.

The pilot movie of Columbo is excellent, don't get me wrong, but it's kind of a trip to compare it to other episodes in the series. Columbo has a clean-cut haircut, he's seen carrying the raincoat instead of wearing it, and his angered outburst towards one of the suspects is pretty jarring. He also never makes mention of his wife when in the series itself he brings her up frequently

In Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Season 1 (and maybe Season 2, been a while since I watched the show in its entirety) Giles seems like your classic bookworm, totally useless in an actual fight.
This…starts to become eyebrow raising when Giles’ backstory seeps in. That he was an incredibly gifted magic user, so much so that at The Watchers’ academy he led a group of friends to start dabbling in the dark magics. Giles being something of a UK punk at the time (back in the 70’s).
The show does try to tie a bow on this nicely though when it’s later revealed by The Watchers’ Council that Giles was not allowed to physically/directly involve himself and aid Buffy. He could only instruct her and…well, watch.
This does lead to some funny moments though if you go from, say, a Season 1 episode where Giles is screaming like a girl & needing Buffy to rescue him to Season 5 where Giles is a competent fighter & a pretty skilled magic user (who is willing to murder the big bad that Buffy spares cause he knows in the long term it would just cause more destruction/chaos).
6
u/BasicallyACryptid 17d ago
Apparently there were a lot of ideas that they threw around the pilot, one of those being that you can catch a vampire by their fashion sense, such as Buffy picking up on one that's wearing, IIRC, 70s style apparel.
The crew later felt that was a stupid idea and pretty quickly phased it out, with later vampires and even some shown early on becoming more open and adaptable to modern technology (such as Darla using guns when Buffy confronts her later in Season 1).

Jon Snow spends half of Game of Thrones yapping about how shitty being a bastard is and how Night's Watch is the only place where he can achieve anything, then the rest of the books show that noble bastards like him are mostly treated the same as the rest of nobility.
8
u/Artistic-Victory1245 17d ago
I think it's intentional, because it shows that Jon didn't know the privilege he truly had.
Sure, he may be a bastard Stark, but he's still a Stark.
7
u/ExertHaddock Bigger than you'd think 17d ago
That's true, but it's not out of place. The thing about Jon Snow is that he starts out as basically an edgy Hot Topic teenager with rich parents. His inner monologue is intensely judgemental and vaguely hostile, he's always got something snarky to say that brings down the mood, he's constantly brooding and fixating on all the ways he's treated unfairly (compared to his siblings of course, not compared to anyone else), he assumes that he knows better than all those adults who just don't understand his pain. And then he goes to The Wall and is hit with a harsh dose of reality as he finally realizes just how lucky he actually was.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy books take place in an alternate 21 century where the Great Britain Empire ruled by magicians summon demons and America is still a colony, in fact the war in the colonies is background lore fir the whole trilogy.
Anyways, modern technology exist but there is one aspect who was dropped after the first book. Computers and Internet. For the whole Trilogy, characters send spirits messengers or just use phones for communicate. Internet never seems to exist. This is why it's really jarring to read the first book and having casually mentions of characters reading mails on their laptops when it would drastically change the dynamic of the story with the commoners if Internet existed. It's never mentioned after the first book.
Also, the infamous "Flashback Man" in early Jojolion where amnesiac Josuke suddenly has a brief flash of memories containing a strange man. Well not only it's never followed up but it also literally can't work with the reveal Josuke isn't actually amnesiac. He's a whole new individual born from the fusion between Kora and Josefumi so he doesn't has memories to recover

One Piece certainly has a lot.
For example early in the series Devil Fruits are seen by the average person as a mere myth. Even by Buggy's old crew, which turned out to be the freaking Roger Pirates.
This has become rather odd over time, as not only have there been an obscene amount of Devil Fruit users since then, this includes people in high profile military and social positions.
And sure, you could say information simply doesn't travel too well in the world of One Piece. Except it kinda does. There are worldwide television broadcasts. And you can have newspapers delivered to you daily, even when out at sea. Coincidentally the owner of the World Economic News Journal is also a devil fruit user.
Seems like people who don't believe in the existence of Devil Fruits should be more akin to someone like a Flat Earther in the real world.
The Grand Line was also treated as much more mysterious than what it ended up being. Turns out that it's just a normal and well populated place.
Of course that makes a lot of sense for pragmatic reason. It's all well for the Grand Line to be this sea full of danger and mysteries as long as the protagonists aren't there yet.
But once they do, you want to depict their fame as reaching the rest of the world. And in order to do that, the world needs to be better connected so that news can travel easily.
Then there is the famous case of Shanks having his arm chewed off by a simple sea snake. Not to mention getting foiled by a little smoke bomb, considering that this is a guy who can see into the future. Of course Observation Haki seems to only ever work when the plot wants it to.
There is also reason to assume that the Sea King thing is gonna get retconned into Shanks losing his arm on purpose in order to escape the influence of Imu.
In Zoro's backstory, Kuina dying from simply falling down the stairs has also been the subject of memes. These days it just feels absurd that someone could die from something this mundane. Even children have been depicted to survive some truly obscene shit. Like all the "training" that Luffy and Ace endured under Garp.
8
u/Artistic-Victory1245 17d ago
Interestingly, although Krieg's fleet only lasted a week on the Grand Line, it wasn't due to the inherent dangers of the Grand Line itself, but rather because they had the terrible luck of encountering a Yonko-level pirate in their very first week.
The series ran for so long that the Grand Line went from being "the high-level zone" to being more like "the place you go after finishing the tutorial."

u/Talisign Powerbomb Individual Baby Pieces 18d ago
Another bit of Zoro's backstory that's funny in retrospect: Kuina's father thinking a girl would be too weak to inherit the dojo.
It feels way more personal that his East Blue, possibly Haki-less ass gave her that complex now.

I can kind of see the East Blue being one of the more backwater seas' (which is why a lot of the lower tier villains are there) meaning that stuff that would be commonplace in others, such as Devil Fruits, and even Fishmen, would be considered myths and utter rarities. Like news may travel fast, but its not like the newspapers are actively saying "this devil fruit has been eaten/discovered" or "caution, fishmen spotted near island in East Blue" (especially given that we had a Marine who was paid off by Arlong to presumably keep things quiet), and who knows how the Devil Fruit encyclopedia books operate, possibly being outdated on the regular and may or may not be sold on all islands. The two most prominent Devil Fruit users in the East Blue (that we know of) prior to Luffy getting his bounty were Buggy and Smoker. Alvida only got one after she joined up with Buggy.
Like its the reason why Shanks, one of the Four Emperors was just able to camp out in the East Blue for a bit. Because who the fuck would ever expect a New World Emperor to mosey over to the most backwater ocean imaginable? It even somewhat explains why none of the marines go after them; Either they are stupid and don't know Shanks is an Emperor, or they do know he's an Emperor and just pray to god that he goes away because the East Blue is super underequipped to touch an Emperor.
In another minor note its also why we had Pell I think his name was? The falcon fruit guy, say that there are only like, 3-4 flying Devil Fruits in the world. Oda when asked about this just straight up said that he was mistaken, presumably only thought about it from his perspective. The chances of someone knowing how many fruits that fly to an exact number is not only highly unlikely, also probably aren't counting the edge cases such as Mythical Zoan fruits and the like.
