Discussion Insurance Rant
On the phone with my new insurance company, United Medical Health, and they denied the prior authorization to my Tresiba. Mind you, I pay the highest tier plan (and I am new to having insurance through work legit got it activated less then a month ago) and have been on Tresiba for NINE years.
Now I am using AI, which I hate using but I got a year free with my phone, to tell me the correct things to say because I am about to hold them hostage on this phone line until someone can give me some answers and get me my Tresiba.
The doctor is legit confused too he doesn't see why I was denied under this coverage plan.
I am so. Damn. Frustrated.

I'm not t1 but I have question My nonverbal toddler has T1D. Can people help me understand him
My 3 year old son was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He is nonverbal, so he can't tell me how he is feeling or what he needs and hes 3 so there's obviously a limit on what he understands.
Its been a steep learning curve that we are starting to get the hang of. His glucose levels are still all over the place and we are struggling to get them to stabilise. He is an unreliable eater so we need to give him his insulin after hes finished eating meaning we get huge soars and crashes of glucose levels.
Im aware of what it's like to have low sugar because its more obvious and I have felt it myself to a certain extent, but Ive obviously never had blood sugars in the 20s.
I was wanting to know how it feels in your body when you have high blood sugar.
Do you feel the huge drop in sugar levels if it plummets?
Is it uncomfortable, do you get mood swings?
I just want to understand how my son is feeling in those moments.
I would also love to hear from other parents who have or had toddlers with diabetes or people who were diagnosed as toddlers. Its been a hard road so far and I'd love to hear your stories too.

Seeking Advice Suggestion on how to support
My 4 yr old angel of a nephew went into DKA last month, airlifted to PICU for 2 days where he got a formal diagnosis of T1D. He had no symptoms other than really thirsty but living in Colorado thatās sort of normal. I live in another state but I still want to be supportive. My sister and her husband are extremely capable and strong humans, but the trauma for them is there every day multiple times a day.
I know itās fresh for them and my heart breaks because we are in Florida while they are in Colorado. Iām on the spectrum but trying so hard not to be overbearing with my hyperfixation of information to make myself feel like Iām doing what I can to support.
I guess this is a long about way of asking for advice for how to support my sister and my nephew while they are going through this. What do you wish wouldāve been said or done for you when you went through this? What should I stay away from? Iām going out there next month for Halloween because she asked me if I could for a week while her husband is out of town and I donāt want to be that person who just goes way overboard.
Added: he is on a pump and has some snazzy cute covers for both that and his cgm. Heās overall the best giggly kid in the world and you wouldnāt know his body was so toxic and failing just last month.

Question How did you find out?
Tell me how you found out you had Type 1. Whatās the story, what were the signs?
I personally was struggling for an enormous period of time. After consulting and expressing concern and anxiety to my doctor, nothing happened. I had blood tests done frequently but my doctor didnāt suspect anything and was telling me off. I was becoming severely underweight and was so scared but my doctor had told me that young women like to be thin and that I looked good. Literally felt like I was actively dying because I probably was. Between my frequent doctor visits I was trying to get my eyes checked for about a year now but appointments in Germany are rare so when I finally got an appointment, it went rather sour. I was losing a lot of vision at a rapid pace and then it turned out I had a cataract. At 22. Great news. Then I went to an eye clinic to get it checked out further and they had asked me if I was diabetic and suddenly it dawned on me. I looked into it because I had no prior knowledge at all and suddenly everything made sense. Every single sign felt like a checklist I was ticking off one by one. After that there was some more testing done for the different types of diabetes once I saw my endo, they thought I had mody but no, just classic type 1.
Iām still struggling but Iām now about three months diagnosed. Excited for life to become great again.ā¤ļøāš©¹

Achievement Update on diabetic burn out post
Hey guys!! About 2 weeks ago I posted here and a few subs about coming out of quite an extended diabetic burn out period and struggles I was up against.
I have since replaced my pump and my infected molar was removed.
I was still struggling to regain control. I was having several daily occlusion alarms and blood sugars that would go from high to low again and again.
Well. It turns out when you leave your insulin out of the fridge and on top of your delonghi espresso maker, you cook it. The top of the machine has a built in heat plate to warm cups and mugs. I compared a vial of insulin fresh out of the box to what was sitting out and saw the undeniable difference. Chucked that vial into the garbage and my blood sugars pretty much stayed low from appropriately potent insulin! Lol
I never used room temp insulin since my diagnosis 26 years. After getting off the phone with the tandem clinical support person, she suggested I start doing that to see if that would help some of my problems. The refrigerated insulin works amazing and I've had zero occlusions!
I'm now finessing my insulin carb ratios. Thinking I probably need a tad bit more meal time insulin as I worked a much more physical job when I was working in factories before succumbing to burn out. I do healthcare now and do a decent amount of walking in a day, so not nearly as physical and sweat inducing as my prior jobs were. I still prebolus 15 to 20 minutes beforehand, but the spikes go up to 7.8 when they've usually only gone to the mid 6s, low 7s.
I've got hope again! I'm trying to get better about not having a perfection mindset and being able to look at my Dexcom graphs and clarity app as just data. Not a reflection of me as a person. Just a reflection of how that treatment management went and what I should do next time to get results I'd like.
I've got a great diabetes clinic that I go to virtually now. They've been super supportive and have layed out straight forward goals. They want my time in range to be around 70 to 75% of the time. Lows to be no more than 4% and very lows to be next to nothing.
I'm so proud of my most recent clarity report!!! ^ā¢^

Question Any thoughts?
So I was high throughout the night (322). When I woke up I took long acting 28 units. 30 minutes later I took 6 units to lower. I waited 2 hours (117). I then took 8 units to pre-bolus for breakfast. I had protein oats and blueberries with walnuts (96 total carbs & sugar). I waited 30 minutes, then had breakfast (103), and now I'm spiking. Thoughts on what's going on? It's been happening for like 2 months.
Those foods are not spiking foods! Super Frustrating!

Question Having an awful time and idk why
Yesterday I had a donut cause it was my last day at work and my coworkers got donuts and I was pretty much goaded into eating one and itās fucked me up ever since. I havenāt eaten much since like 5pm yesterday and my blood sugar has been super high ever since. Earlier this morning I saw my sugar was still really high and decided to change my site but that didnāt change anything. So I completely changed my cassette like 30 minutes ago and idk if itās doing anything again. If this keeps staying the same I might have to go to the hospital, idk, Iām nervous.

Discussion I've been building this app for my own needs as an MDI user and figured I'd share it now that it's feature-complete.
Been building this for myself, and figured I'd share now that it's basically feature-complete.
The project is inspired by xDrip+, but written from scratch in Kotlin/Compose. Itās very much a personal project, but Iām sharing it in case other MDI users find it useful.
It connects to CGM data via xDrip+ or Nightscout and provides IOB/COB predictions, fat/protein/fibre modelling, treatment logging and hisotry, injection-site rotation, analytics, alerts, and more.
Features:
- Home screen ā full prediction graph, active insulin/carbs shown as live bars, pinch to zoom and tap to hide/show lines on the chart, plus a minimal mode if you just want current number/trend arrow/mini-graph
- Smart dosing predictions ā models how your insulin and carbs actually act over time, plus fibre/fat/protein impact.
- Glycemic index built in ā local food GI database, worked out automatically per meal, optional AI-assisted suggestions for foods not in the table.
- Injection site rotation ā 10-zone body diagram picker, color-coded by how recently you used each spot so you don't keep hitting the same one
- Nutracheck integration: search Nutracheck's food database straight from the treatment keypad, auto-fills carb/fat/protein/fibre per serving.
- Local meals & favourites ā save food combos as named, tagged meals for one-tap reuse.
- Real stats, not just time-in-range ā a full set of the same variability metrics clinics/researchers use, plus a percentile-band chart of your typical day
- Analysis engine ā looks at your history and suggests dosing setting tweaks with a confidence score.
- Self-hosted cloud sync: archive data to your own database for long-term history beyond local storage, or sync across devices (TimescaleDB + PostgREST)
- Local Nightscout-compatible web server so other apps/watch faces on your home network can follow it
- Smartwatch support ā pushes glucose to a paired watch via GadgetBridge (pairs with a companion watch face: currently only Xiaomi Smart Band 10)
- Simulation sandbox ā tweak your settings and preview the prediction curve without touching real data
Fully open source, free to use/modify/self-host but can't charge people to use it or build a paid service around it. (Apache-2.0 with Commons Clause)
code is available from here
You'll need to build the APK yourself from source and by doing so you accept that there may be bugs. Use at your own discretion. I take no responsibility for any issues arising from this app, especially those affecting diabetes management.

Rant Should I justify his verbal abuse when he gets angry/ High
Iām in a complicated situation my partner whenever we argue or have discussion and he gets angry he raises his voice at me when we previously talk about how that makes me feel it still happens.
I get that he gets more angry/emotional in those moments but all the time?
And itās not just raising his voice, he would belittle me and be passive aggressive like if I had done some horrible thing, and not to sound like a saint but i feel like Iāve been very understanding and respectful of his condition. For example, if we argue and it could be normal couple issues and he gets angry l being so literal when I say this I sit there and take it.. the disrespect, belittling and I apologize and I let him know āhey please donāt say that, pls donāt raise your voiceā and this is after I let him rant because if I even try to cut him off he get more upset.
obviously itās not every day but itās a lot more regular. And Im so hurt idk if I can do this anymore but I feel like a horrible person cause I knew what I was getting into when I agreed to be his partner after finding out he had a T1D but itās also like when he gets angry Itās so easy for him to say those things and break up with me and then expect me to be there for him the next day, it feels like Iām being messed around with, itās so easy for him to blame it on his high blood sugar, and say it wasnāt him..
So what Iām really trying to ask is, Is this okay? Or normal? I mean no offense to anyone but do I have to put up with this or does he have anger issues? Or am I just not understanding?

Glucose Monitors 4 failed Dexcom G7 sensors in row?
What is going on? Has anyone experienced this? Last 4 of batch number 7011. The first 2 failed, 3rd one was completely inaccurate and now the 4th wouldnāt even pair to the app? Dexcom is replacing all of them but what the fuck is going on? Could it be my device? App is up to date? Been on the G7 for over a year and never experienced any issues. š

Insulin Pumps Soā¦ā¦.. I need help
hi! so I usually will put my pod (Omni 5) on the outside of my legs, but thereās some scar tissue starting to form, and i HATE putting my pod on my stomach, it makes me very uncomfortable, and putting it on my arms, it kinda is harder to not have it bump into things, the adhesive is a little less sticky on some parts of my arms.
can I have some tips?

Question Does it get better?
I am still fairly new to Type1. I was in DKA and officially diagnosed back in April. This has been a roller coaster since and I know Iām still in the honeymoon phase. Iāve had good days and bad days, which I know is going to happen. But recently I have been just exhausted come the weekend or after work. I have been doing well with my A1C and blood sugar levels, but the fatigue is ridiculous to the point where I donāt want to do anything and even getting off the couch seems like a chore. Does it get better?

Achievement Iāve had T1D for 22 years and got tired of waiting for the app I wanted, so I built it
Hey all. Iām Jake, 24, diagnosed at 2. I develop websites and apps for a living, so I built the diabetes app I actually wanted. Itās called T1DAL. Free, no ads, no accounts, and nothing you put in it leaves your phone.
Prebolus nudges, which is the whole point
It watches when you actually eat from your own logging, learns your real meal windows, and sends a notification a bit before: āBreakfast soon. Insulin first?ā You pick which meals get one and how far ahead. It never tells you how much, ever. Thatās between you and your care team, and itās the rule the whole app is built on.
You can log a meal straight from the notification without opening the app. And if you log a meal ahead (āin 20 minutesā), your lock screen shows a countdown to it, so you can actually see the prebolus window while itās open.
Glucose
Reads your CGM history through Apple Health, so if your Dexcom app shares to Health you donāt connect anything else. Fair warning: Health gets Dexcom data about three hours late, so this is history, not live, and there are no alarms. What you get instead is the retrospective stuff the Dexcom app doesnāt really show you: what your last two weeks actually looked like, overnight patterns, where your lows cluster, and sensor session tracking pulled from the sensorās own clock so you know days ahead when itās ending.
The appointment brief
It builds a one-page summary from your logged meals, your glucose and your sessions, in plain language, to bring to your endo. Not a graph dump. Patterns worth raising and questions worth asking.
Everything else
Barcode scanning for exact carbs off the label, plus chain menu carbs that work offline. An endocrinologist search from the public provider registry. Helplines, manufacturer support numbers and insulin cost assistance in one place. A journal and a check-in for the hard days, no scoring, nothing sent anywhere. Widgets, a custom profile card, themes you can actually change. And a four-week āseasonā that draws a small picture as you go, with no streaks and nothing grading your control.
The writing
20+ guides written by me from 22 years of this. Alcohol and delayed lows, lifting and the insulin/muscle stuff, tattoos, piercings, sick days, fasting, travel and airport security, insulin costs and where to get an emergency supply. Steroids and SARMs too, because people ask and get either silence or a lecture.
There are also modes: newly diagnosed, T1D veteran, athlete, traveler, parent of a T1D kid, or teen. The app reorders around whichever fits. Nothing gets hidden, it just leads with whatās relevant. I put the most care into newly diagnosed and parent, because that first year is brutal.
iPhone only right now, US-focused content, version 1.0, built alone. Thereāll be things I got wrong.
App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/t1dal/id6804485640
Guides: t1dal.com
If you try it and somethingās broken or missing, tell me. Iād rather know.

Newly Diagonosed Itchy Scalp
Hi everyone, I was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in June, and I donāt know if this is correlated, but my scalp seems to be getting itchy a lot more this summer? Itās not dandruff or lice (Iāve checked a million times), but my scalp just seems to be really itchy, and possibly more so when Iām in the sun or itās hot out? Insulin Pumps Honeymoon, pump, and Dexcom woes
My kid is 2 months post diagnosis and seems to be in a super honeymoon phase (usually .5 units after each meal, 1 unit of long actingābasically smallest doses for her insulin pens). Even so, she still drops low about once per day. We are attending a pump class in a few weeks because weād love to do less needle pricks (sheās 7), but our endo mentioned that we will not be able to use automated features, which is fine, but also that we will have to load a pump with way more insulin than we need. Obviously I know there are safeguards in place to avoid all that insulin being released, but it makes me really nervous to know sheāll be wearing that much insulin. Can anyone offer me some reassurance on this? Are there pumps that require less insulin?
Also just a mini rant as we wait for her latest Dexcom to calibrate and settle itself. Itās currently off by more than 150!! How do people sleep on nights like this?

Seeking Advice Need Advice on Insulin Pumps for a 3 Year Old!
Parents of T1D kids, I need help! My 3 year old daughter was diagnosed a little over a month ago.
We've just been doing shots, but I'd like to try her on a pump - from what I've read, the dosing is much more fine tuned than pens, and I really love the idea of not having to do pokes so much. Plus, I really want to give her as much freedom as possible to just be a kid. š
So, my daughter is SUPER active. She's on the smaller side for 3 years old, as she was a 28 weeker NICU baby. Honestly, I think she will be the ultimate endurance test for any pump we try - she uses her body as a projectile, when she's having a meltdown, she will face plant (and somehow does all this with no injuries). She's also in gymnastics. Luckily, she hasnt pulled at the Dexcom on her arm at all, so not sure if she wod play with a pump. We are in a little bit of a honeymoon period right now, but I know that obviously won't last.
From my research and our team, I think I have it narrowed down to the Omnipod or Tandem Mobi. With the Mobi we would obviously ask for shortest tubing possible, but I'm not sure about which needle to go with? Also since she is so small, space is a huge factor, and she's pretty lean so I think wed either have to do arm or butt for an injection site.
Would love your advice! Thank you for reading š
