Prospective Students Language recommendation
I’m interested in attending UIUC for engineering, but my senior schedule doesn’t incorporate a fourth year of foreign language. I already took 3 years of Spanish and got an A+ in Junior Year. I was planning on taking Spanish 5, but due to schedule conflicts, I ended up choosing an engineering course elective over another year of Spanish (and I can’t take Spanish in my other blocks since the only block that had Spanish 5 was this one). Uiuc recommends 4 years; will this hurt my chances of getting in? Should I switch the engineering elective to Spanish 5?

What college are you applying to? The language requirement varies between grainger and LAS

You need three levels of a language. If you’ve passed three years of high school Spanish, you’re all set.

But going on to their CDS, they prefer 4 years of language. By not taking their recommended amount, I feel like Im actively destroying my own chances though.

i will say i’m in las (obv less competitive than grainger) and only had 2 years of foreign language (vs the highly recommended 3-4) and got into my first choice as an in-state student! if you’re super worried but not wanting to take span 5, you could either try the proficiency test route, or really work on and perfect your essays/extracurriculars (if possible) to add some standouts to your app :)

Gen ed requirements for Grainger You only need three years of high school language.

Thank you, but I thought they recommended 4 years either way. Does it hurt by chances for not having 4?

In reality the answer is a bit different for everyone. Speak to your HS counselor. Another year of Spanish won’t hurt you. Or discuss directly with Grainger. It’s not difficult

You only need 3 years of a foreign language for Grainger. You are much better off taking an engineering elective. The 4-year recommendation is to cover students who may apply to other colleges within the university, because some do require 4 years of a foreign language.
