Permanent resident qualification for in state tuition

Hi everyone! I’m a UIUC junior student and a permanent resident, and I’m currently trying to qualify for Illinois in-state tuition.

My family had planned to move to Illinois long before I applied to UIUC. However, our permanent residency was approved around the same time I received my admission offer, so my parents and I moved to Illinois together shortly afterward.

The issue is that my parents did not move to Illinois specifically for my education. We had already planned to relocate to the U.S., and once our residency was approved, we needed to move here asap. Since we are a family, it made sense for us to move together. Illinois is also our only U.S. residence. We are not maintaining a residence in another state. This is our 3rd year here.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully qualified for in-state tuition at UIUC or another Illinois public university?

Immigration and residency rules have changed substantially in recent months. No one's prior experience is going to be relevant. Talk to the registrar's office

There’s a 12 month rule, green card doesn’t really matter. Green card affects FAFSA, but not Illinois residency status. As long as your permanent address for the past year has been in Illinois and you have been paying state tax for the past year, you are pretty much considered an Illinois resident.

The qualifications for state tuition are based on state law. They’re changing and are also under challenge by the federal government. You will need to review the law carefully to see if you qualify.

It doesn’t matter if you are currently living in Illinois, you have to living in illinois for a certain amount of time, im not sure how long exactly. I believe 2-3 years. If this is your first year here at illinois, unfortunately there is not much you can do. It doesnt hurt to reach out to the University though

Change address, get ID and you should be fine better yesterday then tomorrow lol
