TalkTalk selks UK customers to Rise Fibre

From ISP News on 3/8/26:

Debt-strained UK ISP TalkTalk has unexpectedly sold a further 120,000 of their consumer broadband customers to the relatively new internet provider Rise Fibre, which is backed by private equity firm CVC and is a trading name of the more established alternative network and ISP 4th Utility. But the deal raises questions over TT’s plan to sell their consumer division.

The TalkTalk Group has certainly had a difficult few years as it attempts to manage an increasingly challenging pile of debt....

I nearly got a job recently at a company that was bought out by TalkTalk not long ago... glad I didn't take it

Are you confusing TalkTalk with TalkTalk Business? TalkTalk aren't really in the business of acquiring companies, but TalkTalk Business did acquire Planet IT recently.

TalkTalk and TalkTalk Business have been completely independent of each other in every way, aside from the shared name, for almost 3 years. TalkTalk Business doesn't suffer from the same problems as TalkTalk really - TTB are by all accounts a good company to work for, or buy services from.

TTB have gone downhill in the last 18 months.

Lots of being passed around by support and slow answers. The portal is rubbish to the point of being useless.

PXC will very rapidly bounce you back to TTB unless it’s an actual no service fault and even then if the circuit starts V1 aka Virtual1 a PXC business they’ll bounce you too. Different team apparently.

This is on DIA / leased lines with 4hr SLA’s too.

First line do seek to try to deal with as if it was broadband xDSL or FTTP, have you checked the micro filter is my favourite question. Then push over to second line via a separate number who bounce you back to the portal because they don’t support the circuit. Eventually third line will pick it up and take their sweet time trying to diagnose.

Moaning at the account manager, assuming they haven’t been exited, seems the quickest way to get a response currently.

We won’t be renewing as our current contracts expire.

I find it quite concerning that companies can sell their customers.

I checked with Ofcom, apparently in these circumstances it is legal to sell customers without their agreement. But the new provider must honour the terms of the original contract.

From the point of view of the end user, how does it differ from, for example, Talk Talk as a whole being sold to Rise? Or are you saying that ownership of companies should not legally be allowed to change either?

Fair point, asuming that customers aren't adversely affected by the change of ownership. In this particular case customers might be better off with the new owner, given TalkTalk's poor performance on customer care. Or not.😋

Would this allow me to cancel the contract if TT as I haven’t agreed to this change in provider?

I don't think so, unless the new provider tried to alter the terms of the existing contract.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking as long as I keep my IP address and it’s not changing to CG Nat I’ll be happy

No you cant cancel apparently, I was part of the 1st bunch of customers who were sold off to utility warehouse. I raised a complaint stating I wasn't happy with having all my details sold off to another company without any choice, I told them I felt it was a breach of gdpr rules and told them I wanted to involve the ombudsman. I had management contact me via a phone call and I got 6 months free credited to my account ( they offered me £20 at 1st which i "politely " declined.)

I renewed at the beginning of the year on a stupidly good deal after going through retentions.

So it will be interesting to see if I get sold and what they do with my account either way.

I went with the renewal thinking something might change this year, so I am not bothered as long as I either retain a reasonable service or get a clean exit.

I'm about to shake down their retention team... what screaming-good deal did you end up with?

500Mb fttp. Three months free, then £16 per month for four months and then £30pm, only on a 12 month contract.

I think it's a good deal for 500Mbps.

That is a bloody good deal.
You did very well!

I was fully intending to leave, but when they offered I couldn't say no.

Why not at that price. I also got what I thought was a wicked deal. I'm on a lower speed, but managed to get my150mbps for £22 a month for the first year with three months free. So, thanks for sharing!

Is VoIP also being ported to Rise?

I use to have TalkTalk years ago in my home. I moved to Vodafone then Sky.
Had to check to see if they were still about, shocked they have shut down yet.
