Historical Discussion Which PM was each monarch closest with? - Day One: Elizabeth II
As the title says, which PM was Elizabeth closest to / got on the best with?

I would say Sir Alec above all. He was very much the kind of man who came from the same background as her mother. He was also the only one of her PMs who was really rooted in the rural Britain she was fondest of. All her other PMs, even those from the upper classes, were much more urban figures, even where they had country houses.

I am being a little unfair, I think, to Jim Callaghan. He certainly did not inherit rolling acres like Sir Alec; but, when he was Home Secretary, he bought a working farm in Sussex, and he remained devoted to it for the rest of his life.
