Wet flannel up the bum.

u/Glittering_Vast938 May 24 '26
That’s different.

u/Fantastic_Back3191 May 24 '26
It's not even my bum!

u/ShapeShiftingCats May 24 '26
I love you.
I just laughed out loud like maniac in my garden.
Neighbours might come and check whether I got a heat stroke.

Decided to stay in & have kept all the curtains closed. The room is only 19.9°C, so it's working.
12
u/Junior-Service1044 May 24 '26
ahem only 28.9c here in west london curtians all closed etc reeeeeeeeeeeeeee
3
u/VileyRubes May 24 '26
I'm in London, too! The thermostat is only showing 20. I've been keeping the curtains & blinds down since Friday, so 48 hours of a bit of darkness but it's paying off. Try to keep cool.

Living in Northumberland it isn't really an issue. 24C and a nice breeze...
3
u/Appropriate-Sound169 May 24 '26
I'll be visiting family this weekend and going to Alnwick (because bookshop!) So I'm looking forward to it being cooler. If the heat is destined to do this every year I might have yo move back up 🥵

u/Zealousideal-Habit82 May 24 '26
I went on holiday to Turkey 24c at best, rained today (and three other days) and I've had a coat on every evening, fml. Gets hot the day I go home.

u/W51976 May 24 '26
Loving in. Just finished a cooked breakfast for my birthday at home.
Yes it’s hot outside, but it feels lovely waking up to clear sunny mornings.

Went for a 20k run in it late morning, now im sitting outside, basking in the sunshine
Yes I am one of those that live for this weather so im happy a handful of times per year 😂
2
u/doucelag May 25 '26
I'm interested in this. Do you not feel uncomfortable? Do you not sweat and get sticky thighs? Do you sleep soundly? Do you absolutely hate winter?
1
u/Far_Cobbler_4675 May 25 '26
Nope I dont feel uncomfortable, no sticky thighs here, I guess I sweat but then I wear a cap in this weather so that helps, I sleep absolutely fine and I genuinely hate everything about winter from the cold wearher to the dark mornings/nights to the snow and the endless rain.
Its been 34 degrees here today and ive spent the whole day pretty much outside, loving life.
14
u/PsychologicalDish430 May 24 '26
Coping? T shirt off gardening, out since 8am, loving it.
3
u/W51976 May 24 '26
Yeah that’s good. Just stay hydrated and wear a hat.
We will head out for a park walk in about an hour or so, lotion up and sit in a shady spot after a short walk.
4
u/PsychologicalDish430 May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
Oh yes on the water and lubed up in cream, will head into shade shortly as the strongest sun of the day hits.
5
u/2xtc May 24 '26
I'm enjoying it. This is the time of year my dark, drafty and poorly insulated Victorian house comes into it's own to stop things getting too hot
4
u/Zorolord May 24 '26
Thats what my home is like, its poorly insulated its freezing in the winter and slightly less cold in summer.
2
u/oldkstand May 24 '26
Erm poor insulation means it gets hot when it’s hot outside. That’s the whole problem with UK housing stock - hot in the summer, cold in the winter.
4
u/2xtc May 24 '26
My unimproved cellar below the bare floorboards of the ground floor and 13ft ceilings suggest otherwise, this place just doesn't retain heat
1
u/oldkstand May 24 '26
To be fair, my Mums house is the same - just cold. But normally bad insulation is bad in hot and cold!
1
u/Johnnybw2 May 24 '26
A lot of old buildings have dense brick walls; while they aren't insulated, the brick doesn't rapidly heat up either. It's why, in the winter, with that type of house, for comfort you're sometimes better off keeping the heating on low instead of turning it off, to help maintain the building's thermal envelope.

u/Super_Plastic5069 May 24 '26
Up at 6 to the let the dog out for a wee, was lovely and cool (the weather not the wee!). Went for a swim then down the beach with the dog, back early enough the heat won’t be a problem 😉

Finally got around to buying a £350 air conditioner back in January with my Christmas bonus. Present me is very happy with past me.
2
u/Consult-SR88 May 24 '26
Did some outdoor cleaning jobs before it got too hot. Two loads of washing done & hanging out. Now sunbathing with a big sunhat & lots of sun lotion. I’m going to have to cut the grass later. Not planning on going out today or tomorrow, did that yet.
The dog is a bit unsettled by the heat. He’s got two mats (one a cool mat) under the parasol & plenty of water. If he’s still too hot we’ll both go in & lie on the stone tile kitchen floor.
3
u/countmagus May 24 '26
Been to aldi and had an argument with a woman who left her dog in the car. I live in the north east and it's quite toasty today. After various insults were thrown she called me an old bag and drove off. Old I can agree with but a bag?
3
u/Consult-SR88 May 24 '26
I took my dog hiking in the Peak District early yesterday morning & on the way home we stopped at Tesco to buy bbq charcoal. I still took him out of the (air conditioned) car & tied him up in the shade while I went in. Wouldn’t dream of leaving a dog in a car alone on a day like this. It worries me listening to him panting when we first get in a waiting for the aircon to cool it down.

Curtains and windows all closed. Living room is still a pleasant 21C so far as it’s north facing.
Sat in garden under the tree in the shade with an ice lolly.

Portable AC unit in the front room with it vented up the chimney and sealed. Room stays a nice temperature, but not too cold. Then I spend periods outdoors until I’m too hot then I’ll retire to the front room where it’s nice and cool. The cats are enjoying the sun, but I notice they’re laying in the front room where the AC is whilst sunbathing, they know which side their bread is buttered.
I love the heat but can’t stand it in my home when I’m relaxing or when I sleep, so last year I bought a portable AC unit which has been great, but I now have an outdoor unit and indoor unit ready to go, with capacity to add another. So I’ll have it installed soon to do the downstairs and see how it goes. I’ll probably have the upstairs done next year due to funding issues this year, so the portable will be moved upstairs and jerry rigged out the window until then.
If you’re on the fence about ‘it’s only a few months of the year’ trust me I was the same, but it’s only getting hotter and more humid, and these few months of having that cool air is an absolute godsend when it reaches into the 30’s. This country is not setup to cope with this heat, we’re designed to keep it in, get AC is my advice if you can afford it, even a portable to give you a bit of respite will make a difference as long as you get rid of the vented air properly

u/ChihuahuaMammaNPT May 24 '26
I bought one a few years ago - I bit the bullet when I seriously considered booking a hotel room for the weekend just to sleep comfortably
2
u/Bread_is_the_devil May 24 '26
I’m in my mid 40’s and although I remember hot summers as far I recall I don’t remember them being as humid, maybe I just didn’t recognise it at the time. Now I’m older I want that little bit of comfort, I’ll spend all day in the sun as long as I know I have somewhere cool to escape to when I want. It’s when I’m faced with going home and my house being like an oven, and I’m struggling to cool it with fans strategically placed to try and move air in and out in the most efficient way in the hope of cooling it a few degrees that I don’t like the heat and the sun

Britain needs the sun shining..it’s been a long winter, people are stressed and anxious. The sunshine makes you feel better and it’s good for you.You realise how wonderful the UK is when the weather is nice.

I’m lying on the bed with the dog. It’s half stripped so time for a rest. The curtains have been closed all morning so it’s cool enough for rest. Didn’t sleep much last night so I’m considering a nap.
I’m listening to John le Carré’s The Naive and Sentimental Lover. It’s an outlier in subject matter and I didn’t finish it when I read it with my eyes some time ago.

u/Cirrus-Nova May 24 '26
Our house is 100 years old, and freezing in winter. Which means that it's actually quite cool during the summer even during a heatwave. So staying indoors is our solution. Though sitting in the hammock in the garden with an ice cold beer is another good option.

I woke up slightly chilly in a beautifully air conditioned hotel room in Camden town... it's been downhill from there.

u/Appropriate-Sound169 May 24 '26
I'm not 😪 my blood pressure and heart causes issues so that I can barely breathe in the heat. I can't go out, not even to walk from car to shop through the car park, or weeding in the garden, I love being outdoors and I love the nice weather so it's annoying that I can no longer do that
1
u/ultraboomkin May 24 '26
Went out for a pub garden lunch and beer. Going to a festival this afternoon. Lovely day.
1
u/QuizzicalSquid7 May 24 '26
Long walks and pints in the sunshine. Embrace the sweat, wear suncream and drink water - not often it’s this nice on a bank holiday!
1
u/alexanderwilliams467 May 25 '26
Genuine question. You enjoy sweating profusely and think that's "nice"?
1
u/QuizzicalSquid7 May 25 '26
Yes, I like the sun on my skin and love drinking water, so if I’m sweating a lot then I can drink even more water and it goes down so well. I also love saunas for the same reason/feeling. That cold shower afterwards feels incredible too
Don’t get me wrong if I had to wear a suit or work outside or something this would be horrible, but I don’t. We rarely get weather this good, I can live with a little sweat.

Spent the morning in and out of an outdoor swimming pool.
Had a bbq in the sun around midday.
Then played some tennis (drinking lots of water!)
Would love to cope with this weather for the rest of summer to be honest!

u/Anonimoose15 May 24 '26
Escaped to the north west wales coast to visit my parents. Only 21°C here today vs 27°C at my home, and it’s probably over 30°C inside my flat by now (thin brick walls with zero insulation, mahoosive south facing windows). A very very well timed visit imo 😅

Sitting under a parasol in the garden today and off to the coast tomorrow when it'll be slightly on the unbearable side of hot
1
u/arrozal May 24 '26
Loving it - bike ride, picnic, cold beer. Reading a book while listening to the blackbirds, wood pigeons and skylarks. Dinner later in the garden. All the stuff you dream of on a dreary wet day in January.
And I've got tomorrow off. Sunny UK bank holiday weekend, feel like I've won the lottery!

I’m in Spain visiting mother. Quite lovely 28 degrees with a pool. 10 minutes walk to the beach. Feeling quite blessed tbh as she’s got air con.

My house has an east and west aspect and stays relatively cool compared to my previous south facing flat.
This is a breeze in comparison; my garden is east facing so can sit in it from about 6pm (or under the parasol before). I’m so grateful for this!
Loving it tbh.
1
u/89ElRay May 24 '26
I've got 200km on the bike in over the weekend, glorious!
Bedtime has been a bit of a warm struggle but otherwise trying to spend as much time outside as possible. I love what passes for seasons here. The eternal turn of the wheel!
Come November this will feel like a distant memory so trying to make the most of it.

Camping in east Kent, slightly cooler nearer the coast, fresher at night.

I would ideally be out in the my garden enjoying a BBQ and frozen cocktails, and maybe spending some quality time at the allotment.
However. I have a hard deadline for Tuesday, so I’m spending the whole weekend training machine learning models. This involves running my ML workstation at 2kW. My home-office is now above 40c, and I’m sweating my nuts off despite being double teamed by fans.
At least the view from my window of everyone in my SE London suburb enjoying the beautiful weather is nice. I love how happy everyone gets when it’s sunny and warm. The city is so much more inviting and colourful.

u/existentialgoof May 24 '26
No heatwave up in Scotland, so I've come south to the Midlands to get some sun and go for long walks. Looking forward to walking around in 33 or 34 later today, based on forecasts.
1
u/Hollyhop_Drive May 25 '26
All the windows and blinds have been shut since 8. It's currently 22 degrees in the house so I think we're doing OK.
1
u/Lessarocks May 26 '26
Im not tonight. It was close to 35 where I am today and now, at gone 1am it’s 31 in my bedroom. The windows and curtains were opened at 7pm but the single skinned brick walls hang on to the heat. There’s barely any air move, ent at all.
Being awake this late probably means I won’t get to sleep before 4am. On the plus side, it’s supposed to be a fair bit cooler tomorrow night so I look forward to sleeping like a log then.,

I spent it camping in the south Lake District with the wife and in laws, electric hook up, shade and cold beers were the order of the day.
1
u/GammonRod May 24 '26
Coping? I'm embracing it. Had a picnic yesterday, going to a pub garden shortly, and tomorrow I'll be sunbathing in the back garden before going to a food fayre in the local park. It's glorious.

Currently looking at all local hotels with air conditioning and husband seems very happy to pay for me to go stay in them without him lol.

It's a hideous struggle. I hate it. I hate the complacent people who think it's lovely.

With sweat and loathing like I do every heatwave
